Weeks of planning and preparation came to fruition yesterday with the holding of our Wacky Wednesday Stu- dent Markets. The idea of Wacky Wednesday originated as Paddys Market and was an institution that was car- ried out at Warrandyte South PS before the school moved to our current site in Warranwood. The opportunity to hold a market by the students for the students is a great real-world opportunity. Of course, we send out a huge thank you to all the parents and family support to make the day happen with lots of donations, time and enthusi- asm. This year there was an amazing arrangement of food stalls, activity centres, make up and nail shops, hair styl- ists, sporting competitions and the sensational arrangement of pre-loved toys and books. Students enjoyed the opportunity to bargain for goods and learnt about the economics of supply and demand. We were very lucky the weather was kind even though the wind was present throughout causing some challenges with money transac- tions and juggling goods bought. Principal’s Report

WACKY WEDNESDAY was the BEST! Weeks of planning and preparation came to fruition yesterday with the holding of our Wacky Wednesday Stu-dent Markets. The idea of Wacky Wednesday originated as Paddy’s Market and was an institution that was car-ried out at Warrandyte South PS before the school moved to our current site in Warranwood. The opportunity to hold a market by the students for the students is a great real-world opportunity. Of course, we send out a huge thank you to all the parents and family support to make the day happen with lots of donations, time and enthusi-asm. This year there was an amazing arrangement of food stalls, activity centres, make up and nail shops, hair styl-ists, sporting competitions and the sensational arrangement of pre-loved toys and books. Students enjoyed the opportunity to bargain for goods and learnt about the economics of supply and demand. Congratulations to our Senior School students on their wonderful efforts to provide such a variety of activities for the younger students. I am very sure we have some very talented entrepreneurs amongst our cohort. Warranwood’s Sensational Soccer Team On Tuesday our Warranwood soccer team per-formed in the Zone Finals. Our team performed bril-liantly over the day and after 3 qualifying games with scores of 0-0, 2-0 and 5-1 managed to make the grand final. The team competed valiantly in the final and despite controlling all the play went down 0-1. Congratulations on such a wonderful achieve-ment and everyone present was very proud of the team work and efforts displayed by the team. I’d like to send a special thanks to both Mr Aretis and Chris Turner for their efforts with coaching and managing the team over the entire season. I know the team will enjoy a special lunch together today to celebrate their season. OUTER NORTH EAST VICTORIA Principal Conference Day at Karalyka On Wednesday last week, Suzanne and I attended the Term 3 Outer East Area Principal Forum. A main focus of the forum was Student Voice and Agency. The day provided us with the opportunity to explore and reflect upon our student voice and agency practices at Warranwood. Student voice is not simply about giving students the opportunity to communicate ideas and opin-ions; it’s about students having the power to influence change. Authentic student voice provides opportuni-ties for students to collaborate and make decisions with adults around what and how they learn and how their learning is assessed. This is known to lead to improved educational outcomes. Student agency refers to the level of autonomy and power that a student experiences in the learning environment. Student voice and agency are intrinsically linked. Agency gives students the power to direct and take responsibility for their learning, creating independent and self-regulating learners. We are very passionate about our student voice and agency at Warranwood PS and while we were affirmed on Thursday as we reflected on what we already do to embed this in our teaching and learning approaches we were also able to think of many new exciting vehicles to improve our practices. The work we have done this year on our instructional model, our readers’ and writer’s workshops, Student Leadership opportunities, our problem-solving approaches to teaching numeracy, and personal learning goals all contribute to a cul-ture at Warranwood where teachers and students work together, and where student voice, agency and leadership are understood as inter-related factors that contribute to the notion of empowerment and greater sense of school pride. Please read through the list below and check off how many you have in place at home and within your family. TOP TEN CYBER SAFETY TIPS

Care about the Share Social media wants you to share as much as you can bear! But the share should be rare. NEVER share: passwords, private/personal information, your location.

Privacy Matters If you care about the share, you’ll protect your privacy, no matter what. Regularly check your privacy settings on social media, and always think before you post. It’s amazing where data ends up – usually all over the internet.

Respect the Privacy of Others Treat others’ privacy as you would your own. Ask for your friends’ permission before uploading photos and videos of them. It’s not all about you, am I right?

Keep Everything Updated Any idea what causes the most security breaches on the internet? Software that isn’t up-to-date. Seems crazy simple, but it’s true! Be vigilant about updating software, including apps, anti-virus and even the humble browser.

Spam, Spam, Spam, Spammidy-spam Even with the best anti-spam and malware software – that’s up-to-date – spam is the modern version of junk mail. It’s everywhere! Learn how to tell the difference between real emails and messages, and dodgy things with dodgy links. Sometimes they don’t look so dodgy...always be suspicious of hyperlinks in emails.

Control the Troll Within There be trolls out there – beware! Don’t feed them, don’t give them what they want: an angry response. Block/Report the trolls. But also: resist the inner troll. If you’re not adding something to the debate online, don’t bother. Don’t be part of the problem.

Cyberbullying and Harassment If you’re being targeted by this kind of behaviour, know what you can do, and where you can get help. Visit the National Centre Against Bullying website and the Office of the eSafety Commissioner's web-site.

Keep Your Friends Close and Strangers at Arm’s Length Do you know how many true friends most people have? Three. Yup, those four thousand and fifty-two Facebook ‘friends’ are a combination of acquaintances, people-you-met-once, people-you-can’t-remember-meeting-once, and probably, some ‘randoms’. They don’t need to know what you had for breakfast, or what concert you went to last night, do they?

Feel the Flow – Keep Your Life in Balance Technology is incredible. Gaming, networking, apps…online shopping! But make sure you take time out and find the right balance for you. Too long on tech can put the world out of whack.

Have Fun, Friend Always remember to chill out and keep things in perspective. There’s too much information online to take it all in! Focus on each moment, and enjoy!

FAMILIES LEAVING Warranwood in 2019 As we are slowly heading towards the end of the year, we will soon be planning classes for 2019. If your family is intending to leave Warranwood at the end of the year, or before, please let us know by email to [email protected] or send in a note to the office. It would be very much appreciated if this could be done as soon as possible so that grades for next year can be organised.

Office News Working With Children Check If you currently have a valid Working With Children Check then pop along to the Office and we will take a pho-tocopy and add it to our data base. It is a very worthwhile card to have if you intend volunteering in your child’s classroom, attend a School camp or travel with the children on an excursion. We would like to encourage eve-ryone to apply for a Volunteer Working With Children Check and register Warranwood Primary School as one of your locations. ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT EMERGENCY EVACUATION Today the whole school participated in an emergency evacuation as a practise to ensure everyone has a clear under-standing of where to go and the procedures to follow in case of an emergency. The staff guided the students in an effi-cient manner with everyone leaving their classrooms in an orderly manner ensuring the safety of everyone. The kinder-garten students also joined us at short notice and joined us in a calm and orderly way. Well done to everyone on your calm and orderly approach. WACKY WEDNESDAY What a great display of entrepreneurial ship was displayed by the senior students throughout the Wacky Wednesday event yesterday. Much planning, time and effort when into the products that were on sale on the day with many of the children going to great lengths to provide worthwhile items for everyone to purchase. The color, delight on the children’s faces and enthusiasm was a pleasure to see. Well done to the leader of this event, Anne Donoghue and the staff for their thorough planning and preparation to ensure a successful day. Thanks also to Megan and her team for providing the lunch for all to enjoy.

BOOK WEEK

20th August – 24th August

This year we are celebrating Book Week from Monday 20th August, 2018 to Friday 24th August. During this week in our literacy sessions, each level will be focus-ing on the short listed books. There will be a number of activities based on the chosen book and each class will be decorating their windows. We will also be hold-ing a BOOK SWAP. The week before book week, stu-dents will be invited to bring in a book, which is in good condition but not needed any longer and those who have bought a book will be able to choose a different book to take home. The book swap will take place on Thursday 23rd August. Also during the week year 5/6 students will be putting on performances for our students in the performing arts room based on some of the short listed books. Each class will attend one performance and this will happen during school time throughout the week. We look forward to our continued development of the love of reading in everyone at Warranwood. ‘There is more treasure in books than all the loot

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN PE & SPORT, 2018

Warranwood sports’ tops: please return all winter sports ’ uniforms this week

A Champion Team - Warranwood Soccer Side! On Tuesday our Warranwood soccer team went through to the regional finals at Mirrabooka Reserve in Black-burn South. Our team had already won their interschool sport competition and then subsequent District finals against 2 other quality sides. The team was lucky enough to play all 3 group games on Tuesday being undefeated and advance through to the Grand Final. In one of their games we won 5-1, another 2-0. In a topsy turvy Grand Final, we found ourselves on the wrong end of a 1-0 result. What a magnificent achievement by all 14 players who held their heads so high throughout the campaign. The significance of the dominance as a team meant that this soccer side has been the most successful in the his-tory of Warranwood Primary School! We had our rocks in defence in Lachie, Cambell, Jacob and Shelby who were ruthless in their approach to stopping many opposition attacks. Liam B was the general who patrolled the backline and helped younger members of the side. Sam our goalkeeper was extraordinary and made some remarkable saves! Our midfield was very strong and ran themselves ragged! Great job Joseph, Christian, Matt and Caleb on set-ting up so many goals! Rafael ran from end to end dominating all opponents who came near him. Some class goals also ensued. Up-front we had the ever attacking Maddie, Phoenix and Liam K who were goal scoring weapons. Of course, soccer isn’t an individual game and the way that we played as a team was second to none! Can I please also take this opportunity to thank our Warranwood parents whose commitment to washing uni-forms, transporting students to and from a variety of venues and support on game day was very much appreci-ated by our team. Finally, I’d like to thank Marco Aretis for coaching our side each week. It was such a great privilege to have someone so knowledgeable and passionate about improving every player on the team during the campaign.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT Every plastic straw that you have ever drunk from is still in existence today. They never go away and often end up polluting our environment. Straws are the most easily avoidable single use plastic, because you just don’t need them. Try asking for “no straws” when you buy drinks out. Here is a short video from 9 year Molly who is on a “Straw no More” campaign https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtCRNH3yWRk

Wacky Wednesday has been and gone. A big thank you to you all (Parents, grandparents, students, ES staff and teachers, for working so hard to make this day such a success. We were lucky with the weather and I think the children were all so excited in preparation of the day. It was bright and colourful seeing all the students dressed up and the array of stalls and activities contributed to today being so positive. The quality was exceptional this year. Thank you from Wacky Wednesday Team.
