Progress Checks

In order to know learning is secure, teachers must use regular and meaningful assessment. This ensures no student is left behind as teachers can intervene or correct a misconception. The key to using assessment well is to get student to prove their learning - not simply tell you where they think they are at. It is then up to the teacher to re-shape the lesson so that the learning can be secured. Please take every opportunity to ensure all have really understood and can apply their new learning. It is essential we check the learning at regular intervals so that valuable learning time is not wasted.

Stratergy How does it work?

Learning lines/continuums Students stand in a line across the room to show what level they are working at or their opinion about a subject.

This can be done several times through a task to see how their ideas have progressed.

Finger ratings Students show on their fingers what level they are working at or show their level of confidence with a subject.

Thumbs up/ down Students put their thumbs up/down to show their confidence/understanding levels. It is important students prove their understanding by asking or forming a question to their peers.

Traffic light learning objectives

Students traffic light the learning objectives to show how well they are meeting them using coloured pencils. Ask them what they need to do to secure their learning.

Post it note mini lesson review

What have you leanrt so far? What skills have you developed? What is your

muddiest point?

Students record on their post it notes responses and display in the room. They can add and amend their responses through the lesson as their learning develops.

Could pose a question at the start of the lesson and record their responses at the start, mid point and end of lessons.

Mini whiteboard quizzes Whole class quizzes that every student has to respond to. 3-2-1 show your boards! Students can devise quizzes that other students can answer

Quiz corners Assign numbers/ letters to the corners of the room

Students answer multiple choice questions by standing in the correct corner of the room

Just a minute Students are in talk pairs and have to talk for a minute about a designatted topic. If they hesitate or repeat it become their partners turn.

Key word definitions Students draw out a 3x2 grid in their books or MWBStudents fill the grid with keywords from the lesson and the teachers reads out clues (definitions). Students cross out when successful

True / False/ Not sure Display a list of statements that students decide if true/false or unsure. Students rewrite the false statements so they are correct. Could use voting pods for this

Questions in the box Students formulate questions about the lesson or during the lesson and add to box. Select and read out for others to answer. Could have a question wall to display these on.

What am I? Give students clues and they have to write on their MWB their responses.

3-2-1 Students have to write:

3 keywords form today’s lesson

2 pictures to represent todays learning

1 sentence to sum up the learning

Glue Diary Students record what they have become stuck on and what they think they need to do to overcome the issue. Works well in practical subjects where students have to anticipate problems and try and solve them before they arise.
