Waste Collection CentreMost of the waste can be placed in waste containers (of the underground or above-ground type) close to your home or be disposed of at bulky-waste disposal sites. Of course, you can also take it to one of the city’s five Waste Collection Centers (‘Afvalpunten’). This waste can be disposed of separately, as: construction waste, demolition waste, household hazardous waste, electrical appliances, glass, wood, iron, recyclable items, plastics, mattresses, furniture, non-ferrous metals, paper and cardboard, polystyrene, rubber, textiles, garden waste.
There are five Waste Collection Centres in Amsterdam: • Rozenburglaan 1 (Oost district)• Struisgrasstraat 33a (Noord district)• Seineweg 1 (Nieuw West district)
• Henk Sneevlietweg 22 (Nieuw West district) • Meerkerkdreef 31 (Zuidoost district)
We are open from Mondays to Saturdays, from 08:00 to 17:00. Amsterdam residents can dispose of their waste here, free of charge. Take a valid ID and proof of your home address.
Waste guide Nieuw-West districtThe City of Amsterdam wants to sort as much waste as possible, to recover raw materials for reuse. We need your help with this. Waste contains many valuable raw materials we can use to make new products. This leaflet, for example, is made from recycled paper. This waste guide informs you how to sort your waste properly, so that we can make good use of it.

Bulky waste collection days for the Nieuw-West districtDisposing of bulky wasteBe sure to dispose of your bulky waste out before 07:30 on the waste collection day. You can put it out the evening before, but no earlier than 21:00. Please put it where the bulky-waste collection vehicle can reach it easily. Don’t put it on the waste container’s plate, as that will mean it cannot be emptied. Wherever possible, try to tie individual items – such as shelving – into bundles.
Fixed bulky waste collection days This map shows the fixed bulky waste collection days for each area. You can also find details about the waste collection days on the lids of underground waste containers.

Remaining wasteIt is important to us that you sort this waste. This is because we can reuse some raw materials, or extract valuable materials from them. Asbestos can cause cancer, so it must always be well packaged and disposed of separately.
AsbestosAsbestos is hazardous. You are not allowed to just leave it in the street. You have to take it to a Waste Collection Centre. If you want to dispose of asbestos, it must be double-packed. This prevents harmful asbestos fibres from being released into the air when the waste is dropped into a container. You can get packaging material for asbestos from the Waste Collection Centre, free of charge. Different rules apply for companies that need to dispose of asbestos.
Tip: you can also have this waste collected by a specialized company. They will charge you for this service. You can find details of approved companies at www.ascert.nl.
Construction waste and demolition wasteConstruction waste and demolition waste are not usually collected in Amsterdam. You have to take it to one of the City’s five Waste Collection Centres yourself.
Fruit and vegetable wasteIn some neighbourhoods, fruit and vegetable waste is collected separately. Otherwise it must be disposed of as non-recyclable waste.
Tip: what can you do if fruit andvegetable waste is not collected in your neighbourhood and you want to dispose of it sustainably? There are various ways of turning fruit and vegetable waste into compost at home. Google “composting at home” and read about the options.
Frying fatUsed frying fat and cooking oil can make great
biofuel. So dispose of it separately. You can do so at the Waste Collection Centre.
Garden wasteYou can have your garden waste collected separately on Fridays, free of charge. It is used to make compost. Send an email to [email protected], describing the place where you plan to leave your garden waste. If you notify us before 13:00 on Thursday, we will collect your garden waste on Friday. You can put your garden waste out between 21:00 on Thursday evening and 07:30 on Friday morning.
Industrial wasteDifferent rules apply to the disposal of industrial waste. Go to www.amsterdam.nl/afval.
White goods and brown goodsWhen you buy a new washing machine, oven or refrigerator, the shop you buy it from will usually dispose of the old one for you. Otherwise, it must be treated as bulky waste. Other electrical appliances, such as radios, televisions and computers, can also be disposed of as bulky waste.
Wood and pruning wasteWood waste such as boards and wooden furniture is bulky waste. Tie individual boards together. Make sure there are no protruding nails or sharp edges. At the Waste Collection Centres, wood is separated from the rest of the waste and reused. You are allowed to dispose of small amounts of pruning waste in the non-recyclable waste container.
Wheelie bins and rubbish bagsGeuzenveld SlotermeerYou can store non-recyclable waste in the grey wheelie bin, and kitchen and garden waste in the green one. These are collected on fixed days every week. The map below gives details of the waste collection days for your neighbourhood.
Osdorp In the following districts, you can dispose of non- recyclable waste in grey wheelie bins, and kitchen and garden waste in green ones: Akersluis, Lutkemeerweg, Ma Braunpad, Noorderakerweg, Osdorperweg, Raasdorper-weg, Ringvaartdijk, Zuiderakerweg. Wheelie bins containers are emptied alternately,
once every two weeks: grey wheelie bins on Thursdays in odd-numbered weeks and green wheelie bins on Thursdays in even-numbered weeks.
SlotervaartIn Slotervaart, grey wheelie bins are used in the following streets: Plesmanlaan, Sloterweg, Ringvaartdijk and Oude Haagseweg. These are emptied once a week, on Wednesdays. In the central area of Sloten village, rubbish bags are used. These are collected once a week, on Tuesdays. In Sloterdijken, the grey wheelie bins are emptied once a week, on Wednesdays.
