Go in, instead of using the drive-through. Idling vehicles produce ten times the pollutants of a moving car.

Think before you buy – “pre-cycle”. Prevent waste before

it happens. By reducing and reusing and buying consciously we can mini-mize the amount of waste we create, conserve resources and save money.

Waste Reduction Week is October 15–21. www.wrwcanada.com

Save a few bags of fallen leaves to use over the winter

months in your Backyard Composter. Winter compost is heavy in food waste, so the addition of dry leaves will help to optimize its eff ectiveness and reduce odours when things start to thaw next spring.

Approximately 20–25% of the average garbage bag is food

waste that could have been backyard composted.

Holiday Collection Change

(See page 10)

Page 10: Waste Management Calendar Woodstock

10Winter Information

Inclement weather in the winter months often may lead to many problems for waste collection. In some cases of severe weather, collection may be suspended or delayed. Check the Oxford County Website for details as it will be posted there immediately or call your local municipal office.

Helpful Hints:✓ Try to shovel out an area of snow that is level to place

your material on.

✗ Snow banks at the side of the road sometimes make it difficult to put your material out close to the roadside. Do not place your materials on top of a snow bank.

✗ Do not place your items behind a snow bank, the drivers may miss it if it is hidden.

✓ Fold the bag tag around the neck of the bag back and stick the adhesive ends together making sure both ends of the tag are visible, this will prevent the tag from falling off the bag in extreme cold weather.

Grasscycling

Grasscycling is a technique to recycle your grass. It is very simple to do, when the grass is cut, just leave the clippings on the lawn. Grass clippings can be a great fertilizer. One bag of grass clippings is equivalent to approximately 100 grams of fertilizer. Since clippings release moisture and nutrients into the soil as they break down, leaving clippings on the lawn will prevent excessive moisture loss and return water to the soil.

Let your grass grow to a height of 9 cm (3 ½″) then cut it to a height of 6 cm (2 ½″). Try not to cut your lawn too short, cutting the lawn too short may cause the root system to be too large for the grass. If your lawn is excessively long and there is a large volume of grass clippings you may compost the excess.

Grasscycling reduces household waste and saves space in landfi lls and saves you money because it reduces the need to water and fertilize your lawn. Also, grasscycling saves you time because you do not have to rake and bag up all of the clippings.

Only 4–6% of electrical energy used by an incandescent light

bulb is converted into visible light. The rest is lost as heat. Modern CFL (compact fl uorescent lights) provide the characteristic warm glow of incandescent bulbs but use 75% less energy and last ten times longer. CFLs may cost more than incandes-cent bulbs but the energy savings can pay off in less than two years.

If every household in Canada changed just one traditional incan-descent light bulb to an Energy Star CFL, the country would save over $73 million in energy costs every year and reduce green house gas emis-sions by 397,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide.
