I n t r o d u c t i o n
This handbook i s in tended t o s e r v e a s a guide t o t h e c l a s s i f i c i a t i o n of wa te rcourses of t h e S t a t e according t o t h e c l a s s i f i c a t i o n system def ined i n t h e F o r e s t P r a c t i c e Rules . The c r i t e r i a s e t f o r t h i n the r u l e s a r e i l l u s t r a t e d through a s e r i e s of p i c t u r e s taken i n v a r i o u s p a r t s of t h e S t a t e . These p i c t u r e s a r e r e p r e s e n t a t i v e of the more common s i t u a t i o n s one might encounter i n the f o r e s t e d a r e a s where a t imber h a r v e s t i n g p l a n might be prepared.
This handbook i s not in tended t o s e t up a s e r i e s of s t r i c t s t a n d a r d s f o r p l a c i n g a p a r t i c u l a r wa te rcourse i n one c l a s s o r a n o t h e r , but is in tended t o s e r v e a s a guide which i l l u s t r a t e s c r i t e r i a which may be cons ide red i n de te rmin ing t h e c l a s s a watercourse f i t s .
The f i r s t s e c t i o n g i v e s some background r e g a r d i n g the r u l e s and a t a b l e which o u t l i n e s t h e major p r o v i s i o n s of t h e r u l e s . The second s e c t i o n p rov ides genera l examples of t h e c r i t e r i a or f a c t o r s a R e g i s t e r e d P r o f e s s i o n a l F o r e s t e r (RPF) must c o n s i d e r a s t h e c l a s s i f i c a t i o n procedure is implemented. The t h i r d s e c t i o n p rov ides examples of v a r i o u s wa te rcourses throughout t h e s t a t e which have been c l a s s i f i e d . The s t a t e is broken down i n t o r a t h e r broad geograph ica l a r e a s which have, f o r the purpose of wa te rcourse c l a s s i f i c a t i o n , s i m i l a r c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s .
Within t h e s e geograph ica l a r e a s an a t tempt is made t o i l l u s t r a t e a c r o s s - s e c t i o n of c o n d i t i o n s t h a t e x i s t w i t h i n f o r e s t e d a r e a s . No a t tempt has been made t o c h a r a c t e r i z e non-fores t a r e a s .
