Strawberry Hill Overseas and Community Concern: SHOCC

is the official charity of St Mary’sUniversity College. It aims to increaseawareness of projects that challengedeprivation and poverty and then raisefunds to support them. It bringstogether all members of the universitycollege’s community – staff, students, alumni and friends – to work together tomake a difference.

SHOC began life in 1971 when a groupof staff who had taught in what wasthen known as the ‘third world’ startedto raise funds for overseas projects. In2008 it added another ‘C’ to its name, appointed a Board of Trustees andbecame a charity recognised by theCharity Commission. Since that date, ithas raised nearly £150,000 for its localand global projects.

In addition to its fundraising work, SHOCC works closely with the University College’s Chaplaincy andStudents’ Union to provide information for students on volunteering, both at home and overseas. It isable to provide small grants to support students who would like to spend a period of time living andworking on a project, and helping others less fortunate than themselves.

SHOCC selects the projects it supports with care and all have a close link with St Mary’s. Mostcommonly, the link is a personal connection through a trustee or other member of the UniversityCollege’s staff or student body. It raises its funds from a variety of sources such as individualdonations from alumni, from Trusts or from fundraising activities including carol singing in London, RagWeek, cake sales and sponsored events within the University College.
