Enjoy Spraoi Festival this year - ensure its future - YOUR

generosity is REALLY needed!

Welcome one and all to the 2014 Spraoi International

Street Arts Festival Those of you who have been before know the score, for the newcomers, the

concept is simple. You take Ireland’s oldest city (Happy 1100th Waterford!!) and squeeze into it performers from across the globe and across the road.

Then it gets interesting as tens of thousands descend on Waterford City centre and begin their own individual voyages of discovery, seeking out young percussion bands, one of Africa’s biggest musical acts, circus performers from

Ireland, Brazil or New Zealand, Spróg, the Catalan flying piano, the crawling insects or a sample of what the future holds at the N.E.S.T stage. And all of that

is barely scratching the surface of what’s on offer.

And the best bit – you’re the boss, the acts are on your streets, there are no VIP areas, to get the best seat you get there early and if you don’t like one show you

can find another one. It’s all down to the skill of the performer in telling their story and to whether that story engages you.

Then after three days and nights of this intense activity, we get to the Spraoi parade, a true celebration of creativity which harnesses artists, performers and musicians

into a monumental performance, all of which is created here in Waterford.

And remember as you enjoy the weekend, there’s hundreds of performers all there to engage and entertain you and there’s also hundreds of volunteers involved in everything from building the parade to running stages and as

always it wouldn’t happen without them.

YOU ARE InvITEd TO JOIn SpRAOI AS WE REAWAkEn A WILd And pRImITIvE pAST.Inspired by the feast of Lughnasadh and W.B. Yeats’ poem “The Stolen Child”, the annual Spraoi Parade on Sunday night will see the ancient celtic deity, Lugh, return to lure people away from their normal and structured present to a time and place of wild abandonment.

• What tribe will beckon you?

• What creature will represent you?

• Will you scurry around nervously with the mice?

• Are you jumpy and watchful like the hare?

• Will you leap and swim like a salmon returning to spawn?

• Or will you posture with the stags or forage with the foxes or even swoop with the owls?

• Or maybe you will barge like a boar or flock in great groups with the crows.

• Whatever you choose, fear not there is a tribe and a creature for all.

• All of them guided on their ancient path by Lugh and his followers.

• So join us and see which tribe best displays your wilder side.

• You’ll be startled and amazed as Spraoi “takes a walk on the wild side.”

With plenty of audience participation our sweetly bumbling hero attempts to woo his damsel with acrobatic dancing feats upon a 20 foot tall chinese pole. This show is sure to leave audiences of all ages glowing.

Big BugsCompany: mr Image Theatre

We’ve been anxiously following the worried reports from all over Europe of giant beetles appearing in the centres of our biggest cities. Seemingly attracted and sustained by the large amount of junk food available to them, these beetles have grown to a phenomenal unnatural size.

News has now broken of reports from concerned citizens of the first sightings of these beetles in Waterford. However according to “The Forester”, a spokesman for the environ- mental organization g.r.E.E.N there is “No need for panic” as they “have everything under control” following the development of a special lifestyle- program which includes the rescue of these creatures and their ultimate release back into nature.

Satirical, visually stunning street theatre full of humour and audience interaction.

Page 8: Waterford Spraoi 2014 Festival Programme

Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars

The Correspondents

The Unusual Suspects

One of the best live acts in the UK has Mr Bruce assuming the look of a monochrome matador, singing with force, scatting at speed and dancing like his life depends on it while Chucks takes the audience on a journey through a multitude of genres from jazz and blues to electro and drum’n’bass.

The Unusual Suspects are an energetic, fun band that are no strangers to the stage, both big and small. The Suspects are quickly becoming known as one of Irelands hardest working bands. Each band member brings their own style, which when combined is electric and sets a new standard for cover bands.

Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars have risen like a phoenix out of the ashes of war and enflamed the passions of fans across the globe. Their albums and live shows embody and radiate their joy, passion for music and love for their fellow man and stand as a living testament to the resilience of the human spirit and an inspiration to hundreds of thousands of people across the globe.

The Hot Sprockets

Microguagua

Electric Movie Band

The Electric Movie Band are an exciting new band on the festival scene who use elements of rock, orchestral music, percussion and electro-acoustic sounds to take their audience on a musical journey through some of the most memorable movie soundtracks of the last 50 years.

Microguagua’s roots go back to the end of 2006, in Barcelona’s Raval barrio. From 2007, they started to win over the streets with their fresh and carefree style and their positive energy. The diverse multicultural influences of the band members have given rise to an original sound, which they have christened “street power reggae”. This is truly a unique way of making music.

The Hot Sprockets are five brothers who came together with a shared love of rock’n’roll music, the kind, that is haunted by the ghosts of rhythm & blues. Mix the good-time revolutionary spirit of MC5, some rough-edged Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and bittersweet soul yearnings and you get the cosmic sounds of The Hot Sprockets.

The Dead Heavys

Take the ‘Soul‘ of the man and sprinkle with a touch of the ‘Blues‘, add a touch of ‘Gospel‘, season with R&B, and serve live with one of the tightest bands in town. That’s the recipe that goes to make up ‘Reuben Richards and The Soul Train‘; and is what his many fans always devour when they go to see the Soul man live!

The Dead Heavys burst onto the music scene from seemingly nowhere in 2012, armed with an arsenal full of modern day anthems set to a psychedelic groove. The Waterford quintet have been singled out as a “band that could easily grab a whole stadium of fans as well as the charts” by punk musician and journalist John Robb.

The Jam Tarts always deliver a live gig that will thrill you with the incredible energy of the performance which is enhanced by the fantastic song selection, which takes in everything from The Pixies and The Cure to the Violent Femmes and The Smiths to Michael Jackson.

ON BOARDTO BE

HAPPYIrish Ferries is delighted to sponsor Waterford’s wonderful Spraoi once again. Every year Ireland’s most unique street festival gets bigger and better, and every year it draws more holidaymakers to the sunny South East. Ireland’s favourite ferry service is happy to bring them here. We wish all the organisers and participants a very successful festival.
