Built in 1946 as an Ice Plant, Fishermans Ice Company manufactured 300# ice blocks for shrimp boats and residential kitchen ice boxes. By the 1950’s Guy Amason expanded into the Shrimp Breading business, then into the Blue
Crab processing business by the early 1960’s.
By the late 1990’s globalization had taken it’s toll on the domestic seafood industry. Andy
Amason, having worked in the business since 1984, dramatically downsized operations in 2000, reverting back to Ice manufacturing only, suppling the much reduced local shrimp fleet, as well as striking out in new endeavors by manufacturing ice sculptures
and man made snow for special events throughout the southeast. All operations ceased in Jan 2018 and
the buildings were emptied of all equipment that could be removed. Today the property stands as a testimate to the local industry that has supported this
economy for years, ready to transition again to its next chapter.
Jack Amason assumed operation of the business then SeaGardens in 1970, operating as a processor of Blue Crabs,
Frozen Shrimp, Caribbean Lobster Tails, and Conch Meat.
Along with a seafood plant employing as many as 150
people at times, he continues to operate the original Ice Plant, even tripling that capacity with
an expansion in 1977.
