    Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies(e.g. lakes , rivers , oceans and groundwater ).Water pollution a ects plants and organisms living inthese bodies of water ; and, in almost all cases the e ect

    is damaging not only to individual species andpopulations, but also to the naturalbiological communities .Water pollution occurs when pollutants are dischargeddirectly or indirectly into water bodies without adequatetreatment to remove harmful compounds .

    CAUSES . !umping of industrial wastes, containing heavymetals, harmful chemicals, by"products, organic to#insand oils, into the nearby source of water is one of thevisible causes of water pollution.

    $. %nother cause for the contamination of water is theimproper disposal of human and animal wastes.

    &. ' uents from factories, re neries, in*ection wells andsewage treatment plants are dumped into urban watersupplies, leading to water pollution. +. % number of pollutants, both harmful and poisonous,enter the groundwater systems through rain water.
