From the Deputy Principal School Support Staff Recognition Week What school support staff do matters. This week we acknowledge our school support team. Without our team there would be no enrolments, no phones answered, no excursions, no play areas or ovals freshly mown and safe, things would stay broken, computers would no longer be networked or effective educational tools, sick children cared for or the wonderful facilities at our school. If you see our support team around the school, please join with us in thanking them for all they do to make our school the wonderful place it is to come to learn and work. Mrs Sandi Smith Without the expertise of our Business Manager Mrs Smith, our school would not have the facilities that we enjoy each day, or the Teacher Aides that support our students. We are indebted to Mrs Smith for her prudent and diligent organisation of our school facilities and for her highly accomplished management of the schools finances. Mrs Hokai and Mrs.Lewis Support students and families all day. From 8am to 4pm there is not a minute that goes by without their involvement in either supporting students with notes, payments, general enquires and first aid, or speaking with parents. We thank Mrs. Hokai and Mrs. Lewis, for their commitment to serving our families and students at all times, with kindness and courtesy. Mr. Wrightson keeps our school connected through access to computers, iPads and interactive whiteboards. Mr. Wrightson is responsible for the upgrades of our devices and keeping us updated with new technologies. Mr. Haylock is new to our team this year and has done a fabulous job in maintaining the grounds and buildings. Before and After School The school has been advised of concerning behaviour of students on their journey to and from school. We ask that parents follow this up with students who walk, ride or catch a bus to school on their own. A reminder that when in school uniform during this travel, students must comply with our school rules and expectations. Please also reinforce that students must not enter private residences along their journey. Arrival at School Students are not to arrive at school prior to 8am. If you have no supervision for your child/ren prior to this time, please make contact with the before/after school providers: CentreCare Childcare Services – 3359 2599, Chermside Early Learning Centre 3359 1899 or Prince Charles Early Learning Centre 3359 6082. Wavell State High School – Year 7 2020 Parent Info rmation Night For students enrolled to attend Wavell State High School in 2020, there is a Year 7 parent information night at the high school on Monday 16 September 7pm. It is important that all parents attend to hear the information that is vital for the transition into Year 7. Regards, Edna Galea

Merit Awards Congratulations to the following students that received a certificate on parade.

Curriculum News Supporting your child’s learning.

WHAT ARE SIGHT WORDS AND WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT?

Sight words are high frequency words that are used most often in reading and writing.

They are called “sight” words because the goal is for your child to recognise these

words instantly, at first sight.

Sight words are essential for your child to learn because they make up approximately

70% of the words in reading.” Many of the essential 100 sight words do not follow the

basic phonic patterns, so they cannot be “sounded out.”

Sight words promote confidence, comprehension and context.

A reader who has mastered the lists of sight words can already recognise

approximately half of a sentence. If your child begins to read a book and can already

recognize the words, chances are they will not feel discouraged and put the book

down, rather they will have more confidence to read it all the way through.

Sight words help promote reading comprehension . When your child opens a book

for the first time, instead of trying to decipher what ALL of the words mean, they can

shift their attention to focus on those words that they are not familiar with. They will

already know at least half of the words, so focusing on the other half helps strengthen

their understanding of the text.

Sight words provide clues to the context o f the text. If your child is familiar with the

sight words, they may be able to decode the meaning of the paragraph or sentence

by reading the sight words. In addition, if a picture accompanies the text, your child

may be able to determine what the story is about and come away with a few new

words in their vocabulary.

Regular practice both reading and learning the words in different context such as

games is essential in mastering “sight words.” Your child should be practising their

sight words each day.

A helpful resource to use at home to support your child with sights words is the Out

and About app. This app has been developed by the Department of Education and

Training, and is aimed at Prep to Year 2. The app also contains additional games and

ideas for parents to help your child recognise sight words.

Our Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 classes all include sight words as part of homework. Please put some time aside to help your child learn these very important words.

Library News Book Week Thank you to everyone for your efforts with our Book Week Parade. We saw an amazing number of very impressive costumes. We had a fantastic week of celebrations and can’t wait for next year!

Up Late at the Library As part of Australian Reading Hour on Thursday the 19th of September, the library will be open late! Come in and enjoy a bedtime story with the whole family from 6pm-7pm. As part of this night, we will be holding a Book Swap. Bring along your ‘gently’ used book to swap for another book.

Dig under your bed, to the back of your bookshelf and to the bottom of your cupboard for a book you have finished reading. Please ensure your book is in good condition – no missing pages, torn pages, drawings or water damage. When you bring your old book to the Library, you will be able to swap it for some fresh, exciting reading material!

Mrs Fall

Behaviour at Wavell Heights SS

In Week 7 and 8, the behaviour focus for the school will stem from the school rules; Be a Learner/ Be Responsible.

Week 7- Be a Learner / Be Responsible – Respect others’ right to learn Week 8 - Be a Learner / Be Responsible – Stay in your space or spot for an activity

To ensure that all students have the best opportunities to succeed it is essential that every child has a safe and respectful environment to learn. To create such an environment, all students and teachers need to show respect to themselves and to others. Some ways we can show respect to others in our classroom is by: - Using active listening skills with teachers and peers - Following teacher instruction straight away - Encouraging everyone to have a go - Provide positive feedback to peers – speaking kindly to each other - Staying in our own space during activities - Using our manners

Before entering a safe and respectful classroom environment, it is important that students notice if they are present, centred and ready to learn. We centre by becoming mindful of our core postural muscles, balance and shifting our attention away from our thoughts (Berry Street, 2018). When centred we are present and thus ready to learn.

If students are finding it hard to concentrate on an activity due to stress or anger, it is important that they talk to their teacher instead of disrupting others in their learning. There are many de-escalation and self-regulation strategies that students may try when dealing with these emotions. Some of these include: - Take a deep breath or mindful breathing - Ask for time out (This may be a 2 minute walk outside / getting a drink/ fresh air for 2 mins etc.) - Go for a walk - Ask to talk to a friend or teacher We will be on the lookout for students showing respect to others and their right to learn.
