If you have been to WOW lately, you have noticed the kids are a bit "wound up" and on the rowdy side. You know the saying, children are “worse behaved” for their parents than anyone else. We all know it is true, but why? It is because they are in their safe space with the people that love them most. It can be easy to get irritated at the shrieks of laughter and the kids running around, and we must keep these to a minimum especially if it is a danger to others. But the children are in their
safe space at Waverly Road, and I am so pleased they can rest easy here and not fear being left out, being judged or fussed at (well, sometimes we fuss a little, because we are human). Most importantly, I am pleased that the love of Jesus is being shown to them through our love for them. As they grow up, nothing will replace the feeling of a spiritual "home" for them like church. I should know, I've been there! Thank you, WRPC for letting the little children come unto Him!

Let’s say goodbye to Dan and Jean! We’re going to
miss you!
Our Pastor Emeritus, Dan Clark, and his wife Jean will soon be leaving Kingsport and moving to Wisconsin to be near their daughter. The congregation will have the
opportunity to say goodbye and wish them well on Wednesday, October 9 at WOW. Following our meal, we will have a celebration with cake and ice cream. We will have no adult program that evening, so that we can visit with them. If you plan to be there for dinner, please be sure to make reservations by calling the church office or registering on the church website. If you can't come for dinner, you may join us for dessert at 6:15. It would be great to have cards and notes from the congregation to present to them, so bring your cards that evening or leave them in the church office before October 9.

by Susan Lodal Tamping down inflammation is a must for people with a chronic inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis or lupus. But you can be exposed
to damaging inflammation without having a specific medical condition.
READ: Foods That Lower Inflammation
Inflammation prevents the body from adequately reacting to stressors and puts the aging process on an unwanted fast track, increasing the likelihood of problems like heart disease. The negative effects of inflammation can be so significant that leading researchers from the University of Bologna in Italy coined the phrase inflamm-aging. So making anti-inflammation lifestyle choices is good for everyone.
How to Avoid Inflamm-aging
Eat a heart-healthy diet focusing on foods like fatty fish, fruits and vegetables. Keep in mind that sugar is highly inflammatory.
Get active with moderate cardio exercise. Remember: Good health guidelines call for 30 minutes a day on at least five days per week.
Lose excess weight, especially if you're carrying those pounds around your middle.
Avoid exposure to all forms of secondhand smoke, and of course, if you smoke, quit.
Limit alcohol to one drink per day if you're a woman, two if you're a man.
Clock seven to eight hours of sleep every night. Some people need more, others need less, but this is the sweet spot between not enough and too much.
Manage stress. Stress is often unavoidable, but you can minimize its effects with techniques like deep breathing and meditation.
Stay social with strong connections to friends and family.
Also, talk to your doctor about ways to boost heart health and any other steps appropriate to your needs to counter inflammation.

The Annual Community Food Assistance meeting will be held on Thursday, October 3 in our own Fellowship Hall again this year. This is the annual meeting of representatives from local food pantries and feeding programs, along with members of the Hunger Task Force and the United Way’s Safety & Stability Vision Council. A few of us will be attending the meeting as representatives from our own WRPC Food Pantry. It is an excellent opportunity to share what is going on in our own programs with others also serving neighbors in need of food.
If you would like to join Susan Lodal as an additional representative from WRPC at the meeting, please let her know.

Volunteers Needed to
Provide Meals for UKIRK
Campus Ministry Those who were at worship on September 15 had the opportunity to meet the new UKIRK Interim
Director, Brianna Olson. UKIRK is the Presbyterian campus ministry at ETSU. UKIRK’s core values are:
Connection: to God and one another
Inclusion: of ALL students and our partner churches
Love: the foundation of our faith, binding us all together
One way UKIRK tangibly displays connection, inclusion and love is through their Monday night program. Each week, they gather together for a meal, worship service, lesson and discussion. That’s where you come in. UKIRK needs volunteers to bring food for each of these Monday evening sessions and they are reaching out to the churches of Holston Presbytery to provide this act of hospitality.
You can either bring a meal or heavy snacks/finger foods (think pizza rolls, mini-quiches, party platters, finger foods). Delivery/set-up begins at 6:00 pm. Dinner is at 6:30 pm with worship at 7 pm. You are invited to stay and eat and/or worship with the students, or you can just drop off the food. If you need to deliver food at a different day and/or time (even over the weekend), Brianna is happy to work with us. Meals can even be taken in advance and be frozen and heated later.
You should plan to feed 6-10 students. Meal options to consider include baked potato bar with salad, pasta dishes, soups or chili with bread, Mexican dishes such as enchiladas or tacos. There are two vegetarians in the group and nut, cinnamon, and chickpea allergies. There are MANY open dates on the schedule* for this school year—please consider volunteering either individually or as a small group. Contact Karen Carman at [email protected] or 423-279-0094 to get more details or sign up for a date that works for you. If you are willing to prepare a meal but are concerned about delivering it to ETSU, we will find a way to get it there.
Can’t cook? You can still support UKIRK by offering your prayers in the following areas:
• for sustained discipleship and Christian living among the students
• for clarity and unity around vision/mission during this period of transition
• for growth of the ministry
Let’s do our part to ensure these students are well fed, both physically and spiritually.
*No meals required for Oct 14 (Fall break), Dec 16-Jan 20 (Christmas break), March 16 (Spring break). The last day for this school year will be Monday, May 4th.
This Sunday we have scheduled one of the four special offerings of the Presbyterian Church. The Peace & Global Witness Offering builds on the Presbyterian commitment to peacemaking established in 1980. This offering sustains our witness in many forms and at all levels of the whole church, all bound together in Christ. Together, they are a living proclamation of the peace we know in Christ, who puts an end to hostility and speaks peace to all, near and far.
Ephesians 2:17 states: “So he came and proclaimed peace to those who were far off and peace to those who were near.”
The letter to the Ephesians tells us that Jesus came to proclaim a peace that is universal. While the earthly ministry of Jesus happened in a specific age and place, the peace he shared is limited by neither time nor geography. As followers of Christ, our call to work for peace begins in our own neighborhoods and extends to the ends of the earth. It is a demanding call, but it’s one that Presbyterians at all levels of the church are seeking to follow.
Giving to the Peace & Global Witness Offering is one way we can be faithful to Christ’s call to pursue peace at home and around the world. In the past, our gifts to the Peace & Global Witness Offering have:
* helped fund educational assistance for veterans * financed programs like the Alabama Prison Birth Project, which works with incarcerated mothers and mothers-to-be providing weekly prenatal and postnatal training as well as nutritious meals * started a Senior Companion Program that pairs senior citizens to help with light chores, errands, and transportation to the doctor * supported the work of a mission co-worker * provided funding for Healing Hearts, a ministry in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which helps children and teens recover from the trauma inflicted through brutal internal conflicts
Twenty-five percent of this Offering stays with our own church to build up peace through the missions we support. Last year, your generosity meant we were able to share $436.50 between Branch House Family Center in Blountville and Oasis of Kingsport. These agencies provide advocacy and education for our neighbors experiencing abuse and support for women in our community.
Twenty-five percent of this offering will expand our witness throughout the region supporting ministries of peace and reconciliation in Presbyterian mid councils (synods) and 50% will support the global witness to Christ’s peace through the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program and the reconciliation work of Presbyterian World Mission.
Your gifts to the Peace & Global Witness Offering will help to end suffering and violence, both here in our community and around the world.
Thank you for your prayers and for your gifts.

Come discover what it means to be a good neighbor! From the inspiration and teachings of Presbyterian minister Fred Roger's we will explore what it means to be "neighborly" - to truly love our neighbors as ourselves the way Jesus has instructed us to live. Start and end times and schedule to be determined closer to. Please sign up on the website using the link for "tickets" below or on the clipboard in the gathering space at WRPC. https://waverlyroadpc.org/forms/?fbclid=IwAR0xSu4sFI9E4rbNA7n9UX9rSh0xgcGJKBzFb0HK8HLHIskU4kHsv_ZWA7o
Stewardship Campaign Coming! On September 22 and September 29, the packets containing the proposed WRPC 2020 Operating Budget, a letter from Collin, and your pledge card will be available in the Narthex. We would ask that you pick these up either before or after the morning worship service and prayerfully consider your financial commitment for next year. We are trying to compress the timing of the overall pledge process this year and have scheduled Sunday, October 6, as Pledge Sunday. Please plan to return your pledge card, either by mail or in person by that date.
There are many wonderful and exciting things happening at WRPC. Nowhere is this more evident than when we see so many young, excited children running down the center aisle on Sunday morning to participate in the Children’s Sermon, and we have recently welcomed a new staff member, Trinity Gibson, to coordinate and support our youth program. On behalf of the entire congregation, the Stewardship Committee thanks you for your generous support of all of the ministries of our church through the giving of your time, your talents, and your financial resources.

this year at WRPC! Let’s get a head start on FLU season this year by getting your FLU shot. We will be offering FLU vaccines on Tuesday, October 15 from 11:30 am – 2:00 pm in the Parish Nurse’s office. The injections will be given by Barry Walton from Mac’s Medicine Mart (same as last year). No appointment is necessary, but you must bring your insurance card.
Highlights from September Session Meeting
Candace Sass was approved as the official representative from our congregation at the upcoming Adoration 2019 event in Johnson City on Saturday, September 28.
The Personnel committee learned from a PCUSA Board of Pensions workshop that there are three benefit plans (dental, vision, retirement savings) that WRPC could offer to our staff without any cost to the church, other than internal administrative time. Personnel Committee has agreed to offer those plans to the staff.
To enhance church security, on October 6, WRPC will implement the use of an off-duty Kingsport police department officer, when available, on Sundays between the hours of 9:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. The officer will remain in his marked police cruiser in the parking lot across the street from the church unless there is a need for his presence on church property.
The Session reviewed the proposed 2020 WRPC Operating Budget for inclusion in the pledge packets to be made available to the congregation on Sunday, September 22.
Donations Needed for Cora Cox Academy Cora Cox Academy, our mission partner, has a need for deodorant and antiperspirant for student use. We will be collecting donations of each in a box in the workroom labelled "Cora Cox Academy Donations". Please place your contributions in the box. Gender-neutral items are preferred if you can find them (think unscented), but deodorants and antiperspirants marketed for male or female consumers are fine as well. The items collected will be taken to Cora Cox Academy in early Oct. Thanks for your help with our ministry to Cora Cox Academy students!!
