Wayne County Extension Council Every Iowa county has an elected extension council that guides local educational programming by partnering with staff. From needs assessment through program implementation and evaluation of outcomes, the council represents the issues and people of the county. We have identified these local issues as priority topics for current and future programming:

K - 12 Youth Outreach Food and the Environment Economic Development Health and Well-being

Food and Environment The ‘magical vegetable lady’ has been known to serve awesome sweet potatoes that have kids telling their parents how good they were at school.

Pick a Better Snack encourages children to try fruits and vegetables such as raw sweet potatoes, jicama, kiwi, mangos and zucchini to name a few. Pick a Better Snack through ISU Wayne County Extension and Outreach reached 574 children in grades DK - 6th in the Seymour, Mormon Trails, and Wayne school districts.

We want communities and farmers to thrive, and families and children to be healthy. And eventually we want to turn the world over to the next generation better than we found it.

Economic Development The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program provides free tax preparation for tax payers who have incomes under $54,000. Four volunteers completed 175 returns. Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC) exceeded $104,000. Evidence shows the EITC has a positive impact on the wellbeing of families.

Health and Well-Being Resources for dealing with a disaster were provided after the tornado went through Seymour and surrounding areas on March 6, 2017. Information on managing storm damaged trees; finances after a disaster; and electricity, water, and food safety were available at: https://www.extension.iastate.edu/wayne/. Parent Education Growing Strong Families is a grant-funded program sponsored by Kids First Communities, Early Childhood Iowa (KFC, ECI). Our parent educator works with families with children prenatal through five years old through home visitation. In 2017, 27 families with 34 children were visited 253 times along with 12 group connections. Growing Strong Families provides developmental screenings for children as well as group connections for both parents and children to meet one another. CBCAP, Community-Based Child Abuse Prevention also supports this program. Our parent educator is active in the community and has organized Truck or Treat for the past three years reaching over 220 kids this year. She is also very active in the Back-to-School event which provides school supplies, public health screening, and car seat checks/replacements.

Agriculture and Natural Resources

Two Women in Ag programs, Women Managing Cattle and Women Marketing Grain, were offered this year at the ISU Wayne County Extension and Outreach office reaching 25 women. These programs are funded by the USDA and Farm Credit Services of America. We are better prepared to serve Wayne County with a larger space in which to hold meetings at our offices located at 220 E. Jefferson St. in Corydon. Since the Emerald Ash Borer was positively identified in Wayne County in March of this year, an Emerald Ash Borer educational meeting was held with the assistance of the Iowa DNR. A ‘drought talk’ was also held in August. Corn stalks were tested for nitrate levels and options were discussed.
