Wood Elementary will receive the Missouri Exemplary Professional Learning Communities (PLC) School Award. This is the second school in the Waynesville R-VI School District to receive this prestigious statewide award this year. Wood Elementary has implemented outstanding collaborative strategies to promote student learning, earned exceptional scores on the PLC rubric and is dedicated to school improvement. Additionally, they have shown upward trends in student achievement over the past 3 to 5 years. “This award celebrates our students’ success and shows our school’s commitment to the PLC process,” says Dr. Antiqua Hunter, Wood Elementary principal. Last spring the staff at Wood successfully completed a PLC onsite review where all indicators on the implementation rubric were found to be at deep levels. Because of their successful implementation of the MO PLC process, and because of their strong student achievement performance, they have been invited to receive FY14 Exemplary PLC recognition during the Powerful Learning Conference (Jan. 26-28, 2014).

Soldiers of the 193rd Brigade Support Battalion from the 4th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, Fort Leonard Wood, volunteer regularly at Waynesville High School and at athletic events. Their volunteer efforts – led and coordinated by Lt. Col. Jeff Britton and his wife, Mary Britton – were recognized during the final regular-season varsity football game by the Waynesville Athletic Booster Club. During the 2012-13 School Year, these soldiers logged 835 hours volunteering; so far this year, they have logged an additional 333 hours for a total of 1,168 volunteer hours. These soldiers have helped with the Tiger Tunnel at football games and various other sport senior nights, the 2012 Homecoming parade, decorating for the JROTC Ball, volunteering for the Route 66 Basketball Tournament, and serving as guest speakers at JROTC and for Patriot Day in the classrooms. Nearly 60 soldiers have volunteered two or more times. Last year, the soldiers donated blood during the Student Government Association’s blood drive, helping Waynesville High School win a competition and receive a grant for SGA activities.

The Mixer Committee LEAD group at the Sixth Grade Center, planned and implemented the school’s first social mixer of the year with 85% of the students participating. The Social LEAD Committee planned activities such as a dance, karaoke, games, food and more. “My favorite part was the dancing in the gym,” says WSGC student William Howell. Students on the committee were responsible for making all of the plans for the mixer. They were divided into small groups responsible for announcements, posters, music selections, as well as borrowing materials from other teachers in order to make the first mixer a success. LEAD coach, Connie Cromwell, praised her LEAD committee students for all of their hard work.

Cromwell gave credit to the students for brainstorming ideas pertaining to activities, as well as problem solving certain issues, such as developing an easier solution for parent pick up once the mixer was completed The mixer began at 2:30, with parent pick up at 5 p.m. Oct. 18. Students who stayed after school needed permission slips, signed by parents, in order to remain after school for the mixer activity. WSGC student Archer Hedgepath assisted in writing up the morning announcements as well as developing the permissions slips, which were used by those in attendance. The event was entirely free and included admission and snacks, which were donated by parents and teachers.

The physical space of the 9th Grade Center is a critical ingredient to the program’s success. Essentially, the 9th Grade Center is a building within a building. While the center houses core courses and facilities dedicated to freshmen, it remains connected so that students can take advantage of the high school’s elective classes and programs. Interaction with upperclassmen is encouraged in their shared spaces, including the library, cafeteria and elective classrooms. Students and faculty have been arranged in small learning communities where core teachers work with a smaller group of freshmen to get to know them, their parents and their specific learning styles. In addition to collaborating to solve problems, the teams tackle rigorous interdisciplinary units, using skills that are important to all core subjects. This moves learning into a larger context that is more relevant and “real world” for students.
