Principal’s Message Welcome everyone to the new school year. I would particularly like to welcome all those who are new to our community in 2017. Whether you are a student, parent, extended family member or staff, it is wonderful to have you join us, and my hope is that this year marks the beginning of an exciting journey full of joy and blessing. For those returning, I hope you enjoyed a safe and restful Christmas, and you arrive back at school eagerly anticipating what God has in store for us in the months ahead. You may notice a number of changes to the place since we last met together. During the holiday break, builders have been working hard to erect covered walkways connecting Junior School with the Administration Block, as well as C and E Blocks. No longer will there be a need to dash along verandas to the office or library when the rain is falling. They also provide some much needed relief from the sun on those hot days as well, something we seem to be having more of lately than we usually anticipate. We thank God for this provision which will no doubt prove to be a great blessing. You might also notice a few more bodies moving around the place. We have a number of new enrolments this year which has resulted in an increase in our staffing needs. Add this to the new staff replacing those who left last year and there are plenty of new names for us to learn. On Monday, 13 th February, parents will have the opportunity to meet all the teachers but it gives me great delight to introduce our new faces now. Joining us in Junior School we have Mrs Jody Farrell (Reading Recovery), Mr Shane Watts-Thomas (Year 6) and we welcome back Mrs Carly Thomson (RFF). In Middle and Senior School, we welcome Mrs Sue Skuthorpe (English & HSIE Learning Leader), Mrs Tracey Hickey (Maths Learning Leader), Mr Joseph Newman (Maths), Mr Nathan Holland (Maths), Mr Matt Evans (English/HSIE), Mrs Rebecca Korawali (Art), Mrs Kirsten Warner (Biblical Studies), Mr Michael Chown (TAS) and Mrs Xanthe Boyce (PDHPE). Also this term, Mrs Hannah Gierhart returns from maternity leave and Mr Michael Allan-Ross joins us again whilst Mrs Simone Newton is on maternity leave. Not only have our teaching needs grown, but so to our administration and support services. Mrs Tebah Humphris will be looking after needs on the student side of the front office, while Mr Craig McKeown joins our IT team providing oversight to all the technology needs within the school. A couple of faces you may have expected to see who have now moved on to different employers over the break are Mr Newton and Mr Dougan. Mr Tony Kircher, who we met last year, will continue on in the HSIE faculty and Mr Milligan will be taking responsibility for matters in Senior School. As we begin a new year, I thank God for the wonderful blessing it is to be involved in the ministry of Christian schooling. It is very much my prayer that each of you will be impacted by the Lord as we partner together in helping to raise the young men and women under our care into responsive and responsible disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ. Junior School News 2017 is going to be an outstanding year.

This was absolutely evident at our Commencement Service on Sunday morning at Wyong Baptist Church. Passionate

Christians from many churches gathered to pray, worship and sit under the Word. Pastor Jamie’s message encouraging us all to use and honour the various gifts God gives us all, from 1 Corinthians, was outstanding. Mr Thomson was simply

amazing, as he operated in his gifting, during our worship service. God spoke to him clearly and he was able to bring a

prophetic song to the congregation. It was a powerful service as the Spirit of God moved and Pastor Jamie’s message was confirmed before it was even delivered. God is great and worthy of our praise.

We are starting the school year with the same heart for corporate worship and whole school Christian unity with our

Whole School Chapel Service on the first day of the year. What an excellent and powerful declaration to our community. “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness all these things will be given to you as well”. Chapel will still go

ahead on Friday, I have the privilege of sharing God’s Big Story with the kids to introduce them to the metanarrative of

the Bible. Our prayer is that the kids will learn to live in the certainty of God’s promises/provision and the future hope of glory.

I am delighted and excited to announce that Carly Thomson is re-joining our team this year. She will be working with

Year 3 and Year 5 on Fridays. Mrs T is one of the most gifted teachers that we have had the pleasure of ministering

beside. The kids already love and respect her; just some of the fruit of her powerful and fun-filled Chapel messages.

Mr Shane Watts-Thomas (Mr Watts) will be ministering to our precious Year 6 students. I had the absolute pleasure of ministering beside Shane and his wife, Tash, in Rwanda in 2016. This man is amazing; he has a wealth of international

experience, limitless energy and a passion for authentic Christian education. In partnership with Mrs Brown, our Year 6 students are going to thrive.

We are also pioneering Reading Recovery in Christian Schools Australia for our Year 1 students. Our DET Liaison Officer stated that we are the first Christian School in NSW to officially provide this intervention to our struggling Year 1

readers. I am honoured to introduce Mrs Jodie Farrell to our community. Mrs Farrell is well-known in the local Christian community. She has been a long serving volunteer and leader of Beach Mission. Mrs Farrell has also taught at a number

of local Government Schools and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our school. I am thrilled for our Year

1 students who will benefit so powerfully from our Mid-Stage One Dynamic Trio of Mrs McKay, Mr Higgins and Mrs Farrell, encouraged by the seasoned leadership of our Infants Learning Leader, the most excellent Mrs Smithers. What a

team.

We are also very excited about the Wyong Baptist Church initiative, WOOSH (Wyong Out Of School Hours Care).

Nuts & Bolts

Infants Assembly is at 2:30pm Thursday afternoons in the Church Hall (occasionally we will have to move to

classrooms when the hall is booked for a church event). Chapel is 9:00am Friday in the Church Hall.

Sport is 10–11:00am Friday for Term 1.

Primary Assembly is 2:30pm Friday in the Church Hall.

Our Year 6 students will soon commence their Junior School Leader nomination and selection process; this process will

be completed before the National Young Leaders Day conference in Sydney on Friday, 3rd March.

Camp Toukley Permission Notes are being distributed for our Years 3 & 4 and Years 5 & 6. The Year 2 students also

visit on Friday morning for an orientation and familiarization program in preparation for 2018. Our theme for this camping program is ‘Faith overcomes Fear’. We will be encouraging our young disciples to start developing and

exercising their faith muscles so they can LEARN TO OVERCOME THEIR FEARS; just DO IT SCARED and step into the FAITH ZONE.

“Abram’s faith was credited to him as righteousness”.

YEAR 7 CAMP Currently our Year 7 students are enjoying all the fun activities at camp, at Port

Hacking, on the southern side of Sydney. The teachers and I are getting to know the students and enjoying their company. Please pray that we have a safe camp and that

all our students get to discover more about the gospel story, through the great

teaching of the campsite staff.

SCHOOL START UP 1. Uniform – We are always keen to maintain our high standard of uniform amongst our Middle School students. To

help with setting our strong boundaries on this issue, it is extremely important that students start the year in the correct uniform, so that staff can work hard at maintaining our uniform policy. Please assist by making sure your child has the

correct items of uniform that they can access each day.

Skirt length – If you were at our school last year, you may remember a letter from Mr Liney in Term 4 that detailed our policy on the appropriate length for girls school skirts. Our policy states that the skirts should be no more than 10cm

above the knee when keeling. We would appreciate our parents supporting this policy so that we can reinforce an attitude of modesty amongst our young girls.

2. Timetables and Handbooks/Diaries – Each student has been issued with a school timetable and Student Handbook (diary). It would be great to ensure that students have recorded their timetable in their diary so they can be

efficient in preparing for each day. Whilst much of our school communication is now electronic, we will still follow our policy that requires a parent/carer to sign the diary each week, so we can be sure that any written communication

between home and school is taking place.

3. Communication Channels – I thought it might be timely to remind parents of the best way to communicate with

the school. a. Should you have an issue that is related to a specific subject, we would ask that you contact the

subject teacher and if more assistance is needed, then the Learning Leader of the faculty. b. Should your concern be more welfare based, or of a general nature, then please communicate with the

Home Room teacher in the first instance. The email addresses for all our teachers can be found on our School

App (search Wyong Christian Community School in the App Store or Google Play).

MEET THE TEACHER NIGHT & YEAR 8 HIKE INFORMATION NIGHT - MONDAY, 13TH FEBRUARY (WEEK 3)

From 6pm in the Multi-Purpose Centre, we would like to meet with Year 8 students and their parents, so that we can give important information regarding the Year 8 Hike that will take place in Week 8 (Wednesday, 22nd March – Friday,

24th March).

From 7pm, all Middle & Senior School staff will be introduced in the Multi-Purpose Centre and it will be an opportunity

for parents to say hello and meet the teachers. Please note that this is not an opportunity to have a parent/teacher interview regarding your child; it would be best to make that for another time. Our first Parent Teacher Interviews will

be in Week 1, Term 2 on Wednesday, 26th April. Information on how to book these interviews will be given out mid-

term.

I am excited about 2017. Our staff and I look forward to partnering with you to spiritually, intellectually, physically and emotionally develop your young people.

God bless,

Senior School News Welcome parent/s and students of Senior School to 2017. I hope you have had the opportunity over the Christmas holidays to have a break from the intensity of school life, the pressures of assignments and demands of after school activities. As you may already be aware with Mr Dougan deciding to take a break from teaching, I have assumed responsibility for Senior School for the foreseeable future. I am tremendously excited to have the opportunity to work more closely with the quality young men and women that we have in our Senior School. No doubt as we navigate all that will occur this year there will be things to celebrate and challenging times to persevere through, but that is all part of the adventure of journeying through to adulthood. Congratulations Ashleigh Barlow - record 2016 result in the HSC for WCCS! Last year’s HSC cohort received their results just after school had broken up. The school does not get provided with the ATAR results the students achieved and we are still in the process of trying to find out from the graduating class of 2016 how they all went. I would like to congratulate last year’s School Captain, Ashleigh Barlow, who achieved an ATAR of 96.20, the highest ever by any student who has graduated from WCCS. Ashleigh is planning on using her abilities to serve Christ in the area of Physiotherapy and will be studying at Newcastle University. Assessment Booklets Over the course of the next week or so, students in Years 10–12 will be receiving their Assessment Booklets. This is an important document which outlines the school’s policies and procedures in relation to Assessment Tasks and also includes the dates for when all Assessment Tasks will occur. Students will be reminded when receiving their booklets that the school policy is that no dates will change once published so it will be important to organise your time well to ensure you are able to complete all required tasks to your full potential. Year 11 Orientation to Stage 6 This Friday is the date for the Year 11 Orientation to Stage 6 seminar day. The purpose of the day will be to commence equipping Year 11 students with the knowledge and tools to survive the next two years of their schooling life. We will investigate how to manage stress, what some of the government requirements around completing the HSC are, and also have some fun with team building activities. Year 11 students are permitted to wear sports uniform to school for the day. BOSTES is no more. Those familiar with education will likely have known that the government agency responsible for oversight of all things to do with schools was the Board of Studies Teaching and Education Standards (BOSTES). In 2017, that organisation has rebranded itself and will now be known as NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA). Essentially they will be responsible for the same things as BOSTES was, but you may hear on occasion reference made to NESA now as opposed to BOSTES. As the new school year gets underway I often reflect on the story of Mary and Martha from the gospels. There is so much to be done and we can easily get caught up in all the work of organising what we have to do. When I find myself behaving like that, I am reminded of how Mary stopped and sat at Jesus’ feet and listened to his teaching. I hope as the intensity of Senior School develops over the year and the pressures of work and assessments heats up, that we will always prioritise spending time with Jesus because that’s what Mary did and Jesus commended her for it. God bless, Mr Darren Milligan | Assistant Principal & Head of Senior School | [email protected]

Welcome to a new year of sport at WCCS At WCCS, we love to see students involved in sport at all levels. Here is an outline of the main tiers of sport and some important dates for your calendar.

1. School WCCS holds swimming, cross-country and athletics carnivals for students to participate in throughout the year. In addition to carnivals, students are encouraged to trial for school teams to represent WCCS at THACCCSA and CSSA Gala Days. We also have Active Lunchtime activities that all students have the opportunity to take part in so they can enjoy the benefits that regular physical activity brings. 2. Taree, Hunter and Central Coast Christian Schools Association (THACCCSA) - Zone THACCCSA is the pathway through to the major CSSA carnivals (swimming and athletics). Various sports played at zone level Gala Days also provide an avenue to compete at a CSSA level. Students can be selected for zone teams based on trials or performance at school carnivals and zone gala days. 3. Christian Schools Sports Association (CSSA) - State CSSA is a state wide Christian Schools competition and the next level up from zone. Students are selected/qualify for competition at this level either as an individual, or school or zone based team. There are also opportunities throughout the year for students playing sports at a representative level to trial for CSSA teams to represent WCCS and CSSA at Combined Independent Schools Events. 4. Combines Independent Schools (CIS) - State CIS is a highly competitive state wide competition for all Independent schools. Some sports require students to be individually nominated to trial for CIS teams whereas others require qualification through CSSA. Selection trials for CIS is only open to high level players. 5. NSW All Schools – State NSW All Schools is an exceptionally high level competition. Any students competing at this level are encouraged to inform the school as we are not necessarily involved in the nomination process at this level and rely on parents and students to inform us of their achievements.

Goshin-Ryu Karate 2016 was our first year of Karate at WCCS. In December 2016, we had our very first Grading. The assessing karate instructors - Hanshi Richard Bradfield and Sensei Tammy Pasfield were very impressed with our students and their level of achievement and care for each other. Goshin Ryu Karate (Central Coast) had two students achieve their yellow belt, two students double grading achieving their green belt, and one student was fortunate to triple grade achieving his blue belt.
