We are a community of believers centered on the Eucharist, the Word of God and

Catholic tradition. Together, we give witness to our faith through the Sacraments,

good works of service and prayer.

Are we faith-ful and filled?

Faith, one of the three cardinal virtues, demands

so much from us that we become witnesses by the way we live – in our words and actions. Faith is

like a bridge that leads us to reach out to one an-other and to God. Faith bridges, binds and blesses

believers. Only if we get immersed in faith matters, we shall become faithful servants and could easily

be seen as the examples of faith.

As the apostle James reiterates very clearly in his

letter, faith without action is dead. However, Jesus warns us against supposing that faith, and service

to God and others whereby faith is expressed, must be rewarded. We need to have the humility

of accepting the fact that we are doing what we are supposed to do as unworthy/unprofitable servants

in God’s kingdom.

In order for us to stay tuned to Jesus’ expectations and the ever-growing demands of our parish, we

have the workshop/retreat for all the ministers on Saturday, October 22. It’s an opportunity for us to

gather to discuss, reflect and recommit ourselves to render our relentless service to our Sacred

Heart Family. Come and reflect; share and serve with joy!

Gifts of the Holy Spirit

In the Book of Isaiah 11:2-3, the Gifts of the Holy

Spirit are described. In the passage the gifts are con-

sidered ones that the Messiah would have possessed.

Through Jesus, we also receive the Gifts of the Holy

Spirit in the Sacrament of Confirmation.

Wisdom helps us recognize the importance of oth-

ers and the importance of keeping God central in our lives.

Understanding is the ability to comprehend

the meaning of God's message.

Knowledge is the ability to think about and ex-

plore God's revelation, and also to recognize there are mysteries of faith beyond us.

Counsel is the ability to see the best way to follow

God's plan when we have choices that relate to him.

Fortitude is the courage to do what one knows is

right.

Piety helps us pray to God in true devotion.

Fear of the Lord is the feeling of amazement

before God, who is all-present, and whose friendship we do not want to lose.

VOCATIONS: GOD’S WILL FOR US There is some-

times a big differ-

ence between

what God is actual-

ly asking of us, and

what we imagine

he is asking. We

won’t have the

grace to do what

God is not asking

of us. But for what

he is asking, he

has promised us

his grace: God

grants what he commands. When God inspires

us to do something (if it really is God who is the

source of the inspiration), at the same time he

supplies the ability to do it, even if it is beyond

our capacity or scares us at the start. Every mo-

tion that comes from God brings both the light

to understand what God intends, and the

strength to accomplish it: light that illuminates

the mind, and strength that gives power to the

will. — Fr. Jacques Philippe A ll the science of the Saints is included in these

two things: To do, and to suffer. And whoev-er had done these two things best, has made him-self most saintly. — Saint Francis de Sales

OUR FRIENDS IN HEAVEN—THE SAINTS The New Testament refers to all the baptized followers of Jesus as “the saints,” meaning the “holy” or “consecrated ones.” The Church has proclaimed many thousands of men, woman and even a few children as “capital S” Saints. This means that because of their lives of heroic virtue they are now in Heaven. The Saints can see us, they care about us, they want to help us, and they really can help us to become more holy and to live in Christ more fully. We can get to know our friends in Heaven by reading about their lives and be-coming aware of the works they did while here on earth. Do we take for granted the schools and universities, hospitals, orphanages and Religious Orders that bring the Gospel to the world and minister to the needs of the Faithful? The works of God’s Holy Ones bear fruit

over centuries and change our world for the better! Here are some Saints who have labored mightily to build the King-dom and have feast days this coming week. May this brief introduction serve as the start of some beautiful Friendships!

October 4 St. Francis of Assisi—The three Saints that everyone, even non-Catholics and non-believers, seems to know are Sts. Patrick, Valentine and Francis. That the current Pope took the name Francis has raised awareness of the great saint even more! It is unfortunate that St. Francis is thought of as some kind of “hippie eco-nut” when in truth he is one of the very few humans in his-tory that fundamentally changed the world in his own lifetime. Francis’ powerful, manly personality attracted untold thousands to join his new religious order, the Franciscans. For the first time in the West, a religious order was not tied to land and buildings. Franciscans embraced poverty, and were known as “mendicants,” or beggars. St. Francis traveled, at great personal peril, to Egypt to meet the Muslim general Saladin in an effort to bring peace between Islam and the Church. Late in his life an eye disease caused him to have his eye sockets cauterized, which ultimately lead to his death in 1226.

October 5 St. Faustina—This humble Polish nun of the early 20th century was visited many time by the Lord Jesus. It is from her diary, which records the details of her visions, that we have received the glorious prayer known as the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. St. Faustina’s mission was to proclaim that the world is on “borrowed time,” that God’s judgement is due but can be averted through prayer and sacrifice. Jesus promised St. Faustina that those who recite the Chaplet will receive great mer-cy at the hour of death. Even the most harden sinner, if he were to say the Chaplet even once, would receive graces from God’s infinite mercy. We recite the Chaplet every Friday at 3pm before the exposed Blessed Sacrament.

October 6 St. Bruno—For everyone, our salvation depends on our unity with Jesus, and for almost everyone we come to sanctity through our service to others. St. Bruno is among those called to work out his salvation in isolation as a hermit. Born in the great ancient city of Cologne about 1130AD, he was ordained and served as schoolmaster and the chancellor, or administrator, of the Diocese of Rheims. In 1080 the people there wanted him as their Archbishop, but Bruno removed himself to a desolate part of the Alps and built an oratory and individual cells, thus founding the Car-thusian order at the Grande Chartreuse. Carthusian monks worship in common, but live in solitary, isolated cells. Because of the fame of St Bruno and his order, Pope Urban II had him brought to Rome against his wishes to serve as Papal Advisor for the reformation of the clergy. St. Bruno ulti-mately persuaded the Pope to release him back to his hermetical life, and Bruno continued to write holy works from his lonely cell.
