TODAY’S READINGS & REFLECTION First Reading — God brought us into this land flowing with milk and honey (Deuteronomy 26:4-10). Psalm — Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble (Psalm 91). Second Reading — The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart (Romans 10:8-13). Gospel — Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus was led into the desert for forty days (Luke 4:1-13). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.

ALMSGIVING, PRAYER, FASTING, AND TEMPTATION As we begin our season of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving, the reading from Deuteronomy reminds us of our duty of almsgiving, that we “set [our offerings] before the Lord, [our] God, [and] shall bow down in [God’s] presence” (Deuteronomy 26:10). The reading from Romans refers us to our prayer, reminding us that “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart . . . For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Romans 10:8, 13). These are comforting words, and encourage us to ask God for what we need and to aid us in our prayer. Finally, the Gospel of Luke shows us a fasting Jesus, who was tempted as we are, and who knows what it means to be human. Someone once said that temptation arises when you’re tired and weary, and the devil comes along and makes a perfectly reasonable suggestion. Jesus shows us that, with his help, we too can overcome our temptations, reasonable as they may sound.

Weekly Offering Report for the Week

We are a Tithing Community following God’s Plan for Giving. The key to understanding how God wants us to give to the Church is found in 1 Corinthians 16:2, “On the first day of the week [Sunday] each of you should set aside whatever you can af-

ford,” In return for the Lord’s generosity. In the last week our people returned to his Church the Following:

Weekly Offering Report for March 10, 2019 First Collection: $3,773.–

Children: $273.- Second Collection: $981.-

“Our weekly offering is one way of saying: we belong to the Lord… and one another. What Does YOUR weekly offering Say? Pray for His guidance THEN renew your commitment to Tithing”.

From the Desk of the Pastor… Dear Sisters and Brothers in The Lord: During this Lenten season 2019 I will be sharing with you

the Spiritual Reflection by POPE FRANCIS.

A TIME OF COMBATE “Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the desert for forty days, to be tempted by the devil” Lk 4,1-2

In Jesus’ 40 days of solitude in the wilderness, he confronts Satan and unmarks his temptations and conquers him, Lent is a time of combat! A spiritual combat against the spirit of evil. We place ourselves decisively on the path of Jesus, the road that leads to life. Jesus’ path passes through the desert, the place where the voice of God and the voice of the

tempter can be heard, where our destiny is truly played out life or death. And how do we hear God’s voice? We hear it in his word. For this reason, it is important to now scripture, because otherwise we do not know how to react to the snares of the Evil One. So read the Gospel every day! Meditate on it for a little while, for 10 minutes. And also carry it with you in your pocket or your purse. The Lenten desert helps us to say “no” to worldliness, to the “idols”, it helps us to make courageous choices in accordance with the Gospel and to strengthen solidarity with others.

How might I better rely on Scripture to follow the example of Jesus’ courage to confront evil?

Blessings, Father José Francisco Herrera, Your servant

Del Escritorio del Párroco... Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas en el Señor:

Durante esta Cuaresma 2019 les estaré compartiendo las

Reflexiones Espirituales POR EL PAPA FRANCISCO

Bendiciones, P. José Francisco Herrera, Su servidor

Lenten Regulations: Lent is a time of renewal for the entire Catholic community. It is also a time of spiritual accompaniment as we assist the catechumens and candidates who will be welcomed into communion with the Church during the Easter Season. In order to assist the faithful of the Diocese of Brooklyn to take full advantage of the Lenten season, our Bishop, Most Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio wishes to draw attention to the following:

Abstinence – All the faithful who have reached 14 years of age are required to abstain totally from meat on Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent. Fasting – All the faithful between the ages of 18 and 59 inclusive are bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. This practice involves limiting oneself to a single full meal and avoiding food between meals. Light sustenance may also be taken on two other occasions during the day. Easter Duty – After they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, all the faithful are bound by the obligation of receiving Holy Communion at least once a year. This precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season, unless for a good reason it is fulfilled at another time of the year.

The obligation to observe, as a whole or substantially, the penitential days specified by the Church, is a serious one. Days of penance are not merely individual exercises – they are observed by the whole Church, as the Body of Christ.

Reconciliation Monday: Our diocese will once again celebrate Reconciliation Monday on Apr il 15, the Monday of Holy Week. As in recent years, this initiative provides generous opportunity for the faithful to experience God’s mercy in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. After having reached the age of discretion, members of the faithful are bound to confess once a year grave sins which have not already been absolved.
