TODAY’S READINGS & REFLECTION First Reading — Those who lead the many to justice shall be like the stars forever (Daniel 12:1-3). Psalm — You are my inheritance, O Lord! (Psalm 16). Second Reading — Where there is forgiveness, there is no longer offering for sin (Hebrews 10:11-14, 18). Gospel — Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away (Mark 13:24-32). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved. ENCOURAGEMENT This Sunday’s Gospel is our final selection from Mark for this liturgical year. It is taken from the end of Jesus’ teaching in Jerusalem immediately preceding the account of his arrest and passion. In it Jesus gives his disciples hope to sustain them through his passion and death and any persecution or suffering that they would encounter after his resurrection. The words from the book of Daniel also provided hope and encouragement to the people of Daniel’s time. The encouragement in these scriptures is meant for us as well, for none of us will escape tribulation in our lives. Followers of Jesus will be able to endure suffering with joyful hope, knowing that Christ’s love will lead us along the way of discipleship and give us eternal life with God. From the Desk of the Pastor… Dear Sisters and Brothers in The Lord: "To be near God is my happiness, to place my hope in God the Lord" - and to be close to God is to be with the community of the faithful whom I have had the honor to serve now for these five years and four months out of my 30 years of priesthood. At this moment it is good to go back and recall my first years as a priest. In the sixth year of my ordination, the Archbishop of Cuenca-Ecuador, Bishop Luis Alberto Luna, sent me to Brooklyn and Queens – a Diocese of immigrants, to connect with the Ecuadorians, but reality demanded something more complex. We needed to attend to our brothers and sisters from other Spanish-speaking countries. After two years I went back to Ecuador for two years after which I returned again and took root in this Diocese. Twenty-two years have passed in which I have been trying to be faithful by bringing Jesus to a people, suffering but full of hope that I have encountered in the various parishes where I have been assigned. Today my greatest desire is to thank God for these 30 years and above all, for the many persons who have left traces of the love of God in my life. I have been blessed with so many good and noble people that I have met on my journey and here at St. Fortunata’s parish. They highlight for me those human qualities of sincere fraternity and a sense of togetherness that have taught me to love with my heart and soul this parish community. Thank you for the party that was a real surprise - for the many details and expressions of affection. Thanks to the organizers: Maria Jorge and her husband, George, for Father Kieran Udeze, Dr. Harry Lopez, Anita Rodriguez with her decorations and flowers, to the Deacon Rafael Cabrera and family and to all those who made financial contributions to make this beautiful party a reality. Thanks to the leaders, to the youth groups, Prayer and Bible groups, African Community, the Igbo Community and the special money rain dance. I even received a gift from the military. Thanks to those who prepared the variety of delicious food and cakes and for the many expressions of love with greeting cards. Thanks to everyone. Thank you to my brother priests who concelebrated with me, and for the friends from other parishes who participated. It is well said that when nothing is expected, the best things happen. I have been able to feel the affection of this my beloved parish of Santa Fortunata. Thanks again to María Jorge, for her sincere heart, her love for the parish, her transparency and loyalty. May the Grace of God protect and bless all the members of Santa Fortunata. Blessings, Father José Francisco Herrera, Your Servant

Fortunata.

Bendiciones, P. José Francisco Herrera, Su Servidor
