HAPPENING THIS WEEK

OCTOBER 31, 2021 THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 3

From the Pastor’s Desk …

The central message of today’s readings is the most funda-mental principle of all religions, especially Christianity. It is to love God in Himself and living in others. Scripture readings for today remind us that we are created to love God by loving others and to love others as an expression of our love for God. Our religious practices like prayers, Bible reading, Sac-raments, acts of penance, and self-control are meant to help us to acknowledge and appreciate the presence of God in our neighbors and to express our love for God by serving our neighbors with love, sharing our blessings with them.

All Souls’ Day is a day specially set apart that we may re-

member and pray for our dear ones who have gone for their

eternal reward and who are currently in a state of ongoing

purification. From time immemorial, people of all religions

have believed in the immortality of the soul, and have prayed

for the dead. Join us as we pray for and honor those from our

parish who have gone to their eternal reward on Tuesday,

November 2nd at 7 pm; inviting everyone to join our daily Mass in November to pray for all Souls. This is the only help

we can give them and they can receive God’s mercy upon

them.

Our sincere gratitude to you all for supporting our parish

needs by buying raffle tickets and for helping to sell them; al-

so, thanks to all for working behind the scenes. This was a

great fundraiser and we hope to replace at least one air condi-

tioning unit which has been defective for a long time.

Thanks, prayers, and deep appreciation all those who partici-

pated in our recent increased giving campaign. Please note

that our Church participation is less than half as compared to pre-Covid.

This past Sunday was mission Sunday and it again reminds

us to be missionaries in our home parish. Our baptism call is

to become a missionary, to become a friend, and to bring

friend to Mass. Spread the word regarding our Jubilee year to

your friends and neighbors and invite them all to come to our

Eucharistic celebrations and to become part of a great par-

ish. Let us continue to pray and Our Father and Hail Mary each day for our parish family. Fr. Dominic.

WORSHIP TOGETHER TODAY’S READING FIRST READING Moses taught the Israelites the importance of passing on the faith to their children and grandchildren. What are some faith traditions you practice in your family?

SECOND READING Hebrews speaks of Jesus as the heavenly and eternal high priest who intercedes to God on our behalf. How often do you offer prayers of intercession to the Lord?

GOSPEL Jesus and the scribe agree on the two greatest commandments: to love God and to one’s neighbor. Which of these

two commandments do you find most

THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

OCTOBER 31, 2021 THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 5

Entrance Antiphon Forsake me not, O Lord, my God; be not far from me! Make haste and come to my help, O Lord, my strong salvation!

FIRST READING: A reading from the Book of Deuteronomy

Moses spoke to the people, saying: "Fear the LORD, your God, and keep, throughout the days of your lives, all his statutes and commandments which I enjoin on you, and thus have long life. Hear then, Israel, and be careful to observe them, that you may grow and prosper the more, in keeping with the promise of the LORD, the God of your fathers, to give you a land flowing with milk and honey. "Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD alone! Therefore, you shall love the LORD, your God, with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength. Take to heart these words which I enjoin on you today." The Word of the Lord. Responsorial Psalm

R. I love you, Lord, my strength.

I love you, O LORD, my strength, O LORD, my rock, my fortress, my deliverer.

R. I love you, Lord, my strength.

My God, my rock of refuge, my shield, the horn of my salvation, my stronghold! Praised be the LORD, I exclaim, and I am safe from my enemies.

R. I love you, Lord, my strength.

The LORD lives! And blessed be my rock! Extolled be God my savior. You who gave great victories to your king and showed kindness to your anointed.

R. I love you, Lord, my strength.

SECOND READING: A reading from the Letter to the Hebrews

Brothers and sisters: The levitical priests were many because they were prevented by death from remaining in office, but Jesus, be-cause he remains forever, has a priesthood that does not pass away. Therefore, he is always able to save those who approach God through him, since he lives forever to make intercession for them. It was fitting that we should have such a high priest: holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners, higher than the heav-ens. He has no need, as did the high priests, to offer sacrifice day after day, first for his own sins and then for those of the people; he did that once for all when he offered himself. For the law appoints men subject to weakness to be high priests, but the word of the oath, which was taken after the law, appoints a son, who has been made perfect forever. The Word of the Lord.

LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK “Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone!” This ancient prayer has been found on the lips of many of God’s devoted servants throughout history. In its simplicity it reminds us of a timeless truth we often forget. We often worship other gods rather than the One true God and find all of our relationships distorted as a result. This One True and Eternal God who alone has a solitary claim on us and must be loved with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. It is important that we remind ourselves often of God’s primary place in our lives, lest we get distracted and sidetracked. But there is one more important piece that Jesus insists belongs with this. We must love our neighbor as ourselves. You cannot have one without the other. God’s presence within each one of us requires that all of our relationships work together. This is at the heart of God’s kingdom. ©LPi

GOSPEL: A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark

One of the scribes came to Jesus and asked him, "Which is the first of all the commandments?" Jesus replied, "The first is this: Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is Lord alone! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these." The scribe said to him, "Well said, teacher. You are right in say-ing, 'He is One and there is no other than he.' And 'to love him with all your heart, with all your understanding, with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself' is worth more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices." And when Jesus saw that he answered with understanding, he said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." And no one dared to ask him any more questions. The Gospel of the Lord.

Prayer for Our Jubilee Year Heavenly Father, bless and strengthen our parish family as we prepare ourselves spiritually for our Jubilee Year. Fill us with an ardent desire for Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament which nourishes and heals our souls. Inspire us, through the gifts of the Holy Spirit, to bring the Gospel message of love and hope to all people and help us to be good stewards of your wondrous creation, our world. Through the intercession of Mary, our beloved Mother, may our families stay united in love, our children grow in faith, our elderly and homebound be cherished and cared for and our sick be healed. May our grieving parishioners be consoled and our prayers for all the souls of our faithful departed find a place in Your Heart. Bless all Priests, Dea-cons and Religious who have served and are now serving the people of our parish. May their lives of prayer and ser-vice foster vocations to the Priesthood and Religious life. Our Lady Queen of Peace, Pray for us. Our Lady of Lourdes, Pray for us. Amen

Home Blessings!

Have you thought of having your house blessed? During our Centennial year of Our Lady Queen of Peace would be a per-fect time to have your house blessing! Just contact the parish office and set up a time when the priest can come over, bless your home and family, and enjoy time to meet with you. The meeting is very informal and takes little preparation on your part. It’s a great opportunity to connect as a domestic church with both God and your priest. We look forward to celebrating your “home” church. We often bless our homes on the feast day of the Epiphany. On this day, we’ll inscribe the initials of the first names of the kings (C, M, B) and the year on our doors. The blessing is a beautiful family tradition that acknowledges the sacredness of our “domestic (home) churches.” But wait, there’s more. There is an Eastern European tradition (I believe a Polish tradition) where a family invites the priest over to bless a home during the time from the feast day of St. Stephen (December 26th) to the feast day of the Baptism of the Lord (often celebrated as late as February 2nd). This is a great reflection on the im-portance of these traditions. This tradition has strong liturgical roots as well. The main purpose is to invoke God’s blessing upon the house, as the priest sprinkles holy water and invites God into the home. It is stunning as it connects them to the Church, and our faith. Most priests have done numerous house blessings over the years. These blessings are also a great way for the priest to connect with families, and pray with them. (As well as a time to enjoy a good cup of coffee and pos-sibly, a favorite dessert, with the family). Just call the parish office and set up a date and time!
