THE MOST HOLY TRINITY

First Reading: Exodus 34:4b-6, 8-9 The Lord appears to Moses on Mount Sinai and proclaims to him that he Lord is a “merciful God...slow to anger and rich in kindness and fidelity.”

Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 13:11-13 Paul exhorts the Corinthians to live in peace and harmony, and for the first time, invokes the Blessed Trinity.

Gospel: John 3:16-18 In this beautiful passage, Jesus tells Nicodemus that God loved his people so much that he “gave his only son.” Jesus reveals to Nicodemus that anyone who believes in him will not die but will enjoy life with him for all eternity.

A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS

HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly The Most Holy Trinity June 7, 2020 “Having come down in a cloud, the Lord stood with Moses there and proclaimed his name, ‘Lord.’ Thus the Lord passed before him and cried out, ‘The Lord, the Lord, a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger and rich in kindness and fidelity.’ Moses then bowed down to the ground in worship. Then he said, ‘If I find favor with you O Lord, do come along in our company.’” How exciting is the description of Moses’ encounter with God. He reveals His name and we discover the attributes of God – mercy, graciousness, kindly and faithful. It is no surprise that there is an invitation to accompany his people on their journey. It is the gift of accompaniment which continues with us as we encounter our God. The same characteristics from the book of Exodus, are the driving force for us to grow in holiness. As God revealed Himself to Moses He manifests Himself to us, for ‘God so loved the world He gave His only Son.’

PHASES AND LEVELS, WHICH IS WHICH? Governor Cuomo has told us that NYS will gradually reopen in four phases according to the regions of the state. On Tuesday, May 26, he allowed all of them except the City of New York to enter into phase one and tentatively set Monday, June 8 as phase two. If this happens, parish offices in the counties of Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster and Westchester may be open to the public. All precautions must be taken (wearing of masks, maintaining a six-foot distance, frequent washing of hands, and sanitizing surfaces). Once we reach phase four, houses of worship will be able to resume their services. Our first priority is the safety of the clergy and people, and self-care of all ministers. The second priority is to resume in-person worship. According to Faith Forward, there will be five levels to gradually get us to the ultimate goal of Sunday Mass with a congregation. As you know, we have been at level one for quite some time. Churches are open to our people for private prayer and confession. Level two will allow for the sacraments of baptism and marriage. At the moment, there is a maximum of ten attendees. This will be followed by level three with the celebration of weekday Masses and funeral Masses with limited attendance. Level four will permit Sunday Mass with supervised attendance. Entrance to churches will be through one door only. A greeter will be present to count the faithful as they enter. Strict cutoff will be when 25% of the church capacity is reached. At that point, it is up to the pastor to decide what to do with the overflow – hold a simultaneous Mass at another location, live stream it, for ask the people to attend a later Mass. Now is the time to prepare your parishioners on which method you have selected. The final level, the fifth, will see us resuming our full parish Mass schedule and sacramental activity. Refer once again to the June issue of Liturgy Update that was sent last Wednesday for some ideas on outdoor Masses.

The Most Holy Trinity The Creator and Lord of all so loved his people that for their salvation he sent his Son, the Prince and Savior of the faithful, who washed and dried our wounds. And he exuded the sweetest balm, from which flow all good things for salvation…. For the Father is the Father, the Son is the Son, and the Holy Spirit is the Holy Spirit, and these three Persons are indivisible in the Unity of the Divinity…. As the flame of a fire has three qualities, so there is one God in three Persons. How? A flame is made up of brilliant light and red power and fiery heat. It has brilliant light that it may shine, and red power that it may endure, and fiery heat that it may burn. Therefore, by the brilliant light understand the Father, who with paternal love opens his brightness to his faithful; and by the red power, which is in the flame that it may be strong, understand the Son, who took on a body born from a Virgin, in which his divine wonders were shown; and by the fiery heat understand the Holy Spirit, who burns ardently in the minds of the faithful…. Therefore as these three qualities are found in one flame, so three Persons must be understood in the Unity of the Divinity. And as three causes for the production of words are seen, so the Trinity in the Unity of the Divinity is to be inferred. How? In a word there is sound, meaning, and breath. It has sound that it may be heard, meaning that it may be understood, and breath that it may be pronounced. In the sound, then, observe the Father, who manifests all things with ineffable power; in the meaning, the Son, who was miraculously begotten of the Father; and in the breath, the Holy Spirit, who sweetly burns in them…. Therefore, in these three Persons recognize your God, who created you in the power of his divinity and redeemed you. Saint Hildegard of Bingen

Saint Hildegard of Bingen (t 1179) was a German Benedictine nun, physician, composer, and mystic. She is a Doctor of the Church.

May their souls and all the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace. Amen

We pray for all who have passed away from our parish and their families especially during these difficult times of the Corona Virus.

To God, through Christ, in love poured out through the Holy Spirit

A Summer Blessing

Walk along beside me, Jesus, as I begin the months of summer. As I work, play, enjoy family time and friendships, may I hear Your voice within me, guiding me toward all that is right and good. Give me faith in Your presence, knowing that You walk beside me in everything I do. Gracious and loving Jesus, thank You for the gift of Summer. May the warmth of its sun and the beauty of its light remind me daily of Your love for me. Amen.

Spiritual Communion Prayer My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love you above all things and I desire to receive you in my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally, Come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as if you were already there And unite myself wholly to you. Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen.
