SOCIAL CONCERNS
The St. Luke’s prayer chain is open and ready for prayer requests. Call 515-964-1278 and ask for the prayer line. If the office is closed you can press 7 to be connected.
Children's Religious Education Update: Religious Education classes will start on September 30th. Parents should receive an email from David Reising with more information. Thank you for your patience as we begin a new school year.
What does the SLTE Social Concerns do? They lead
St. Luke’s parish in understanding the physical and ma-
terial needs and the social injustices of our local, rural,
and global community, and to encourage our parish
members to engage in service of those needs, as we
become the manifestation of Christ’s hands and feet to
those we serve.
How do they do this? Each month, St. Luke’s tithes
10% of the tithing to charities. Social Concerns deter-
mines where the tithing goes every other month.

This year’s Des Moines Area Hunger Hike will be a little differ-ent… we are going virtual! Participate in this year’s hike by getting active - walk, bike, or hike sometime during the week of October 4th - 11th, on your own, with family, or a few friends. We will hike throughout the city, distant but together in the fight against food insecurity. The Hunger Hike serves as a visible witness to the concern around food insecurity, both locally and globally, as hundreds of people of all ages, a coalition of institutions, organizations, denominations, and faiths gather to "walk that more may eat." Since 1969, Hikers have raised over $1 million dollars to help allevi-ate hunger in our community and abroad. Donations are distributed among nonprofit agencies and programs that provide food to those in need. Save the Date Then, join us on Sunday, October 11, 2020, at 1:30pm on Facebook Live - www.facebook.com/desmoineshungerhike/ - as we hear from guest speakers about their missions to alleviate hunger both locally and globally. In communities large and small, food insecurity has increased due to the effects of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). Now more than ever, we need to join together to combat hunger.

Have you ever been online and saw a post that you just wanted to say “What the heck?!?” and then look at where it is from. There are a few really good satire or mock-news websites out there one called the Onion, another called The Eye of the Tiber, and another one called Babylon Bee. The first one takes current events and makes up wild sto-ries about them - for example “Sugar industry shaped pub-lic opinion for decades” and then it makes up a story that only a true conspiracy theorist could believe. The second site is in the same vein but Catholic based, one of the peo-ple they talk about is “pope” Michael who is a mailman from Oklahoma City was elected “pope” in 1990 by six people including himself and his parents. The third one is an ecumenical Christian website that did an article about how a new version of “Operation” game is just figuring out which essential oils to use. All of these websites take things that some people would like to hear that then take it to the extreme of making it seem almost real. Sometimes when I read some of the articles they publish, I think that our real news agencies are really satire sites as well. In the past, I have had some people contact me about things that they have seen on one of these websites and ask if it is true… no they are not! Where we get our infor-mation and is there an agenda behind it is something we should always ask about where we get our information, especially when it comes to information about the Church. There are so many people out there trying to get your at-tention, especially during this political season. Politicians on both sides of the aisle are trying to get your vote and are willing to put out partial information to try and convince you. Politicians and Lobbyists are very poor places to get Church teaching because they usually seem to be more in line with their political party or agenda instead of the Church. I am always amazed when I hear a politician state some Catholic teaching and then twist it for their own sake. There are a few good websites that we can check out the facts to make sure that something is really a Catholic teaching, the Catechism of the Catholic Church is the place that I would recommend to start. So, if something does not seem to make sense when you hear it, it most likely is not from a good and reliable source. I have a couple of good resources and trustworthy web-sites that I visit to make sure things that I have heard are the correct teachings. We cannot know everything, but if we know where to look to find the truth, we can learn any-thing. -Father Ken
