Success in construction is a lot about maintaining good relationships – with
teams working on a project, with customers and suppliers, and with
neighbours and people affected by a construction site.
As a people person, you’ll enjoy bringing people together and problem
solving.
To construct a building on time and to budget,
it’s essential to have the right design. This
work starts before anyone goes on site and
continues right through a project. As a creative
person, you’ll enjoy using your technical
knowledge to find the best solutions for getting
a project built, taking the design from paper to
site and working with all types of materials.

A great way to access a career in construction is to join an apprenticeship programme. We offer our apprenticeships to the best candidates only and we make sure that everyone gets the attention they need.
An apprenticeship gives you:
• a recognised national qualification from a college or university – up to degree level
• paid work with a construction company
• the support of a mentor throughout your studies
• on-the-job assessments
• an apprenticeship manager and coordinator overseeing your progress
Apprenticeships
Through an apprenticeship with McLaren, depending on the type of apprenticeship you undertake, you can achieve anything from a diploma to a degree.
The apprenticeships we offer are at least 24 months long. A degree apprenticeship takes four to five years, followed by an end-point assessment. If you’re thinking about options for GCSEs or A levels, the minimum you will need is maths and English. A science or design technology qualification is also useful. If you’re considering attending college full time before starting an apprenticeship, a recommended course is the BTEC Extended Diploma in Construction and The Built Environment Level 3.
Where an apprenticeship programme is not available, we are happy to sponsor other qualifications.
Colleges and universities can provide more information about specific courses and apprenticeships.

Trainee Site Manager
Nathan Anscomb
Nathan has been around construction his whole life. His dad and uncle both work in the industry. He’s also had construction jobs himself, working on mechanical and electrical engineering, plumbing, domestic work, office space fit-outs and some civil engineering and surveying.
He’s now with McLaren as a Trainee Site Manager with a long career ahead of him in the industry.
It was a three-week work experience placement at a large contractor that opened Nathan’s eyes to a career in construction management rather than working on the tools. That placement helped him understand more about three possible careers on construction: civil engineering, site management and quantity surveying. The experience led him to choose construction management.
At school, Nathan picked construction tech and did a product design course on the side – great preparation for a two-year HNC at Barking and Dagenham College studying the built environment.
At that point he could choose between a full-time degree or an apprenticeship. To keep his options open, he secured a university place and applied for a few apprenticeship roles – finally opting for the apprenticeship offered by McLaren Construction.
“There’s no guarantee of a job after university and all the debt over your head when you’ve finished,” says Nathan. “It’s better to get the knowledge as you work.”His interview was more of a friendly chat than a formal interview, exploring his experience of working on the tools and how to translate that knowledge into a career in construction management.
After college on Mondays, Nathan spends the rest of the week dealing with anything that comes up on site. Safety is an important part of his work – how to manage and plan potentially dangerous activities so that no-one gets hurt. Everything he does has a safety element.
His mentor and colleagues on site have helped him understand the technical drawings he needs to work with each day and visualise the work that needs to be done. He enjoys being able to talk to people. “There’s no such thing as a stupid question, because they know they asked the same ones ten or 15 years ago,” he explains.Nathan hopes to be a full site manager or senior site manager within ten years.

CALL-OUT TITLESchool – Albany School in Hornchurch (GCSEs)College – Havering College, Rainham, level 3 Extended Diploma McLaren sponsored Higher Education - South Thames College (Level 4 Apprenticeship in Construction Management)
EDUCATION PATH
Aaron wasn’t sure what career he wanted to pursue when he was picking his GCSEs, but when he got good grades in maths, he knew he wanted to do something involving numbers. College helped him narrow down his choices to construction, specifically quantity surveying or estimating.
In his second year of studying for his level 3 in construction and the built environment, his next choice was to study full time for a higher qualification at university or look for an apprenticeship. The college encouraged him to find an apprenticeship and combine practical experience with study. He applied to about 15 companies, large and small, attending assessment days and interviews for quantity surveying and estimating roles. After his interview with one of our estimating directors, he was offered an apprenticeship with a trainee estimator role at McLaren.
A typical week sees Aaron at college on Mondays and in the office for the rest of the week. He goes out on site visits when he can, usually tagging along with other trainees to share the experience. Aaron’s mentor keeps an eye on both his college assignments and his McLaren work, answering any questions he has or finding someone in the office who can help. At college, the lecturers make sure that Aaron and his fellow students are applying themselves to the detail and using the right terminology, which all helps with his work as an estimator. Now that he works in construction, he views buildings differently. “I like seeing what’s behind the whole process and having an idea of how much a building costs,” he says. Soon he’ll be spending an extended period on site, seeing some of the work he’s already done being put into practice. Aaron’s aspiration is to go into commercial management. As he approaches completion of level 4 of his apprenticeship, he’s looking for a university place to do a degree in quantity surveying or construction management, with McLaren’s help.
“Having two sets of deadlines – work and college – is quite hard, so you have to stay organised all the time,” says Aaron. “If you get overloaded with work or college work, you won’t be able to focus on one or the other. You need a balance – take time for a break and enjoy life.”

Georgia Key
CALL-OUT TITLE
School – Haberdashers Askes Knights Academy, Grove ParkCollege - Lewisham College Apprenticeship: Level 2 in Business and Administration
EDUCATION PATH
Georgia’s story takes her from a stall on Lewisham market to the role of bid coordinator with McLaren. She is now working on a day-to-day basis supporting our pre-construction Major Projects team to bid for new business.
Having left school without much in the way of qualifications, Georgia’s Saturday job on a family-owned fruit and veg stall became six days a week. She knew that selling fruit and veg wasn’t for her in the long term, so she enrolled at Lewisham college on a touch-typing course, to give her a business skill to offer employers.
She didn’t stop there. Having heard she could do an apprenticeship in business and administration, she did some research on the apprenticeship.gov website and found a recruitment agency offering help finding a role with an apprenticeship.
After interviews at a couple of employers, an interiors and fitout specialist offered her an admin role with a one-year apprenticeship that would give her a level 2 NVQ (BTEC). She jumped at the opportunity.
She went back to MSTRS for her business skills training. An assessor came to the office to observe her work and she did voice recordings and written reports to complete her qualification. Over four-and-a-half years, the company grew from five people (including Georgia) to over 50.
“I learned so much at Corley + Woolley,” says Georgia. “I was so glad to be taken on by them after the apprenticeship. A job isn’t guaranteed – you’ve got to show you want it.”
In particular, she enjoyed working on putting bids together. Her experience with this and her qualification gave her the confidence to apply for a bid coordinator role at a consultancy. A short time later, a recruitment agency contacted her about a proposals coordinator role at McLaren and she joined the company in the spring of 2019.
Getting back into construction was something she wanted to do, having heard about the company and seen the McLaren name on cranes in the city. An important factor for Georgia was that McLaren has an Investors in People accreditation. “It takes a lot to get that, so they obviously care about their people,” she says. “It definitely shows – it’s a very professional and supportive environment and the support from the people around me is great.”
Georgia has suggested the apprenticeship route to lots of people she knows as a great way to learn – and earn – on the job and build a career. “It’s my greatest achievement, so far” she says.

Trainee Quantity Surveyor
Billy Lewis
As Billy waited for his exam results (economics, history, and philosophy and ethics A levels, plus a BTEC in business) he knew he had an offer from Coventry University to study for a degree in economics. At around the same time, he met two directors from McLaren who suggested he think about an apprenticeship in quantity surveying. He knew nothing about construction, so he took up the offer of a month’s work experience with McLaren.
Billy enjoyed the time he spent at our Lakeside and O2 project sites and decided to take the apprentice route. It will take him to a degree in four years, with automatic enrolment on a RICS Assessment of Professional Competence – after which he can put ‘MRICS’ after his name.
“It makes a lot more sense, if someone’s willing to pay for you to learn and you get work experience on the job and a qualification – without the debt of going to university,” he says. For his first year, he attends Anglia Ruskin University in Chelmsford two days a week – it’ll be one day a week for the following three years. The rest of the time, he’s on site. He started off back at the O2 site initially, assisting the team. Moving to the Tiger Way site in Hackney (a school and a residential block), he was given numerous packages to manage himself, together worth around £1.3 million. He’s enjoying the challenge.
Billy’s apprenticeship is a significant first step in his career in construction and his ambition to get to the top. Every three months, he sits down with his manager to check his progress against the QS tracker, which sets out what he should have achieved at each stage of his apprenticeship.
Balancing his time between work, the university, study and having a social life he admits can be a challenge. But when he compares his apprenticeship to his friends’ experience at university, he says, “It’s better to get a job – I’d rather get the experience than go out drinking!”

Whatever the clichés from the past, construction companies are looking for the best talent to join them – your gender simply isn’t a factor, on site or in the office.
Because schools and colleges (and parents) are encouraging more girls to study STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and maths), an increasing number
of women are choosing construction – and they get the same level of respect, satisfaction and achievement that men do in this industry.
THE MYTHThe construction industry is no place for women
THE MYTHConstruction doesn’t pay well
Really? Who told you that? The reality is that across the industry most people earn more per hour than in many other industries.
The average annual salary of someone working in construction is significantly greater than the UK national-average salary.
If you join as an apprentice, you’ll earn while you learn and the company pays for your study.
THE REALITY
THE REALITY
Myth busting
The construction process begins long before anyone arrives on site. Town planners, structural
engineers, architects, project directors, 3D modelling technicians and many others contribute to a complex sequence of activities to plan, design,
sequence and manage a construction job.
Everyone involved is highly skilled and specialised, using modern innovations and construction
technology – learned on the job or through education.
Working in construction requires the ability to think outside the box and use your problem-solving skills.
THE MYTHConstruction is a
simple profession, for non-academic people
THE REALITY
32 33
THE MYTHAnyone can get a job in construction, and once there you are stuck
THE MYTH Working in construction is really
dangerous
Construction workers are in high demand across all disciplines, on site, in technical roles and office based. Construction is one of the leading industries where employers fund technical training to develop the skills of their employees.
You can take the academic route or learn on the job – or both – and the industry offers lots of different career paths, to suit every skill set.
Everything you learn is highly transferable, whatever you end up doing in life - problem solving, team work, time management and people skills.
Safety is the number-one priority on every modern building site. There are people on site who are dedicated to keeping everyone safe – in fact, everyone has a role to play to create a culture of health and safety, from the banksman on the gate to the crane operator to the site manager. Mental health and wellbeing are also important topics
that people talk about on site.
The construction industry is as safe as it has ever been. Accidents and injuries in construction have decreased every year since 2006, according to The Health and
Safety Executive.
THE REALITY
THE REALITY
Myth busting
THE MYTHIf I don’t go to university my
future won’t be as bright
Lots of people learn best when they can see first hand how their studies can be
applied in real life. Apprenticeships and work placements offer just that.
As an apprentice, typically you’ll spend one or two days a week at college or
university and the rest of the week on site or in the office. What you learn in the classroom you’ll be able to see in
practice when you’re at work – and you can apply what you see at work to your
studies.
It’s a great option if full-time study isn’t for you. You’ll end up with the same
qualifications and career opportunities – and something to be proud of.
