Formative Assessments

Formative Assessments are used to measure if the students are understanding the concepts being taught during a lesson.

These can prove as midway points to determine if a group of students need retaught or more scaffolding.

The Use of Online Quizzes

Web-based quizzes as formative assessments is an effective way to provide students prompt feedback. Used as pre-test to determine the background knowledge of students.

Prior to a lesson students may be tested on the assigned reading with a multiple choice or short response questions.

Schoology Data Tracking

Schoology is a Learning Management System (LMS) that makes it possible for teachers to post quizzes, test, and questions as an attachment in a social network type setting.

Implementing the assessment is easy and there are variations of combined types of questions. The responses of each student is in a chart type format. The percent is calculated by student and class. From the Schoology website describing data

The Cost of Online Quizzes

Schoology is a free for teachers and parents. It is low cost to school districts.

This program is connected to Google Apps, Blackboard and other popular online resources that many schools already have integrated.

Pro & Cons

Good

The web-based quiz using multiple choice or short answer questions is easy to distribute and collect useful data. It provides the teacher with a picture of which students are understanding the concepts.

This type of assessment can be set up to allow students more than one chance at success.

Not so GoodThere are forced choice answers that are limited and do not display the great depth of the knowledge. It can be used as a short essay format but will take more time to provide feedback.
