INTRODUCTION:

Tinospora cordifolia has long been a part o f Ayurvedic medicine in India. This perennial, herbaceous vine

belongs to the family Menispermaceae with many common names viz., Giloy, Guduchi,

Gurcha, Amrita or heart-leaved moonseed. The species is common throughout tropical and subtropical zones

at an altitude of 600 m. It is found in India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, China, Thailand, Philippines,

Indonesia, Malaysia, Borneo, Vietnam, North Africa, and South Africa. Giloy is a large climbing shrub with

elongated twining branches spreading extensively. A special feature is the presence o f wiry aerial roots arising

from the branches. Stems are rather succulent, creamy white to grey, deeply cleft, papery bark and rosette-like

pores (lenticels). Leaves are simple, alternate, cordate-ovate, and very thin with long leaf stalks bulged at the

base and apex. Inflorescence, called racemes is both axillary and terminal; flowers tiny, greenish yellow,

unisexual dioecious. Fruits are of three shortly stalked subglobose drupes, scarlet coloured when ripe. The plant

flowers during the summer and fruits during the winter. The plant is genetically diverse, containing different

active components, including steroids, aliphatic, alkaloids, glycosides, and diterpenoid lactones. These active

compounds are distributed over all parts o f the plant, such as the root and stem1,2.

A versatile herb, giloy(tinospora cardifolia) helps in treatment of many health problems. Rich in nutrients, giloy

is used to manufacture many herbal, ayurvedic and modern medicines. Its stem is considered highly effective

because of its high nutritional content and the alkaloids found in it. Other bio-chemical substances found in

giloy include steroids, flavonoids, lignants, carbohydrates and so on.

Causes for corona virus infection: The virus that causes COVID-19 is in a family of viruses called

coronaviridae. Antibiotics do not work against viruses. some people who become ill with COVID-19 can also

develop a bacterial infection as a complication3,4.

Symptoms:

Most common symptoms:

Fever

Dry cough

Tiredness

Less common symptoms:

Aches and pains

Sore throat

diarrhoea

conjunctivitis

Loss of taste or smell

A rash on skin, or discolouration of toes or fingers

Serious symptoms:

Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath

Chest pain or pressure

Loss of speech or movement

Immunomodulatory nature of giloy:Cordifolia A and syringin have been reported to possess

immunomodulatory activity. Tinosporin, diterpenoid has been claimed specially for the treatment of the targeted

viruses including (retroviruses) (HIV-1, HIV-2) all sub-groups, all subgroups, HTLV, Herpes simplex

virus(HSV) and another viral diseases.

We have tested all the reported phytochemicals of giloy in our in-silico models. We have found that one of the

giloy compound, Tinocodiside, docks very well within the ACE2-RBD complex, akin to withanone. The

stimulated state of Tinocordiside also showed favourable binding poses within ACE2-RBD interface with

several interacting sites5,6.

We suggest that Tinocordiside rich extracts of giloy would be one more viable options for controlling COVID-

19 entry into host cells and general immunomodulatory nature of giloy would enhance innate immunity against

COVID-19 infections.

Benefits:

Giloy performs important function to keep our cells healthy and rid us of disease. The benefits of giloy are

Natural immunity booster

cures-indigestion

Alleviates anxiety and stress

Boosts vision

Rich in anti-oxidants

Prevention:

Giloy can boost immunity hence it may be useful for various fevers specially for viral fevers like corona

infection. Though there is no evidence that giloy can cure corona infection but it can raise your immunity to

fight against it. According to some scientific studies, the results show promising results to control corona

infection7.

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF DISEASE:

Although much has been discovered regarding the transmission and presentation, less is known about the

pathophysiology of COVID-19. An overview of the disease pathophysiology8,9.

Asymptomatic Phase:The SARS-CoV-2 which is received via respiratory aerosols binds to the nasal epithelial

cells in the upper respiratory tract. The main host receptor for viral entry into cells is the ACE-2, which is seen

to be highly expressed in adult nasal epithelial cells.24 25 The virus undergoes local replication and

propagation, along with the infection of ciliated cells in the conducting airways.

Invasion And Infection Of The Upper Respiratory Tract: In this stage, there is migration of the virus from

the nasal epithelium to the upper respiratory tract via the conducting airways. Due to the involvement of the

upper airways, the disease manifests with symptoms of fever, malaise and dry cough. There is a greater immune

response during this phase involving the release of C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 10 (CXCL-10) and

interferons(IFN-β and IFN-λ) from the virus-infected cells. The majority of patients do not progress beyond this

phase as the mounted immune response is sufficient to contain the spread of infection.

Side effects:When taken by mouth: Tinospora cordifolia is possibly safe when taken for up to 8 weeks. It might

cause headache or nasal pain in some people. There isn't enough reliable information to know if Tinospora cordifolia

is safe to use for more than 8 weeks or what the side effects might be.

When applied to the skin: There isn't enough reliable information to know if Tinospora cordifolia is safe to use when

pregnant or breast-feeding. Stay on the safe side and avoid use10,11.

Special Precautions and Warnings:

Pregnancy and breast-feeding: There isn't enough reliable information to know if Tinospora cordifolia is safe to

use when pregnant or breast-feeding. Stay on the safe side and avoid use.

Diabetes: Tinospora cordifolia might lower blood sugar levels. Use it cautiously if you have diabetes, and monitor

your blood sugar levels. The doses of your diabetes medications might need to be adjusted.

Surgery: Tinospora cordifolia might affect blood sugar levels, so there is a concern that it might interfere with blood

sugar control during and after surgery. Stop taking Tinospora cordifolia at least 2 weeks before a scheduled

surgery12,13.

CONCLUSION:

It can be concluded that Tinospora cordifolia (Giloy) can be effective in breaking the chain of viruses that

causes infection due to its multiple miraculous properties mentioned above in the paper. It is believed since ages

that Ayurveda has the power to treat deadly diseases naturally. These herbs do play a role in boosting up

immunity and eliminating virus from the body and significantly treat viral infections. This plant is a powerhouse

of various phytochemicals which purify blood, boost immunity and flushes toxins from the body. Consuming it

can induce anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties which can cure breathing problems and fever. The

compounds present in the herb can block the novel virus from replicating and could be a potent tonic in the

treatment process.
