Spelling ou can be tricky as it can make different sounds. In the words below ou makes a short u sound.

These prefixes both have negative meanings.

Unit Four: Words ending in –gue and -que
The letter u acts as a wall and usually stops the g from making its soft sound.

Unit Five: Words with ei, eigh, ey
These words sound like ay and do not follow the ‘i before e, except after c’ rule.

Unit Six: Adding im- to root words with m or p
Before root words starting with m or p, the prefix in- becomes im-. It changes a word into its opposite.

Unit Seven: Prefixes re-, sub-, inter-
Sub- means ‘under’ or ‘beneath’. Inter- means ‘among’ or ‘between’. Re- means ‘back’ or ‘again’.

Unit Eight: Prefixes super-, anti-, auto-
Super- means ‘above, beyond’. Anti- means ‘against’. Auto- means ‘self’.

Unit Nine: Adding –ation to verbs to form nouns
We can add the suffix –ation to verbs to make nouns. If the verbs end with an e we drop the e before adding –ation.

Unit Ten: The suffix –ous
The suffix –ous can be just added to some root words (e.g. mountainous). If a root word ends in –our, we have to swap the letters our for or before adding the suffix –ous.

If the root word ends with a c, add –ian to make a noun. If the root word ends in –cs, drop the s first.
