Literacy

Can you use your phonics to make a list of the names of the stories written by Julia Donaldson that you have been learning about over the past few weeks?

Phonics

Please practise phase 3, phase 4 and phase 5 (for challenge) sounds as much as possible. A normal phonics lesson in class would introduce a new sound, use this sound to write words and then use the words to write sentences. We would then play games, encouraging the children to read the words and sounds learnt. If your child is finding Phases 3 and 4 too easy, move on to Phase 5 (this is the normal level expected at the beginning of Year 1).

Can you use your tricky words to write simple sentences? For example, ‘I went to the park’, ‘I went to the shop’ and ‘The dog can bark’.

There are many fun and exciting ways of being able to recap learnt sounds and learn new sounds with your child. For instance, an example is writing different sounds in chalk on the pavement or on your driveway and asking your child to jump on the sound that you want them to find. An alternative of this is writing different sounds in chalk on your trampoline and asking your child to jump on the sound that you want them to find.

· Dragons Den is a good game on phonics play

· A game to practise quick fire reading of phase 2, 3 or 4 words - https://www.ictgames.com/mobilePage/helpAHedgehog/index.html

· Phonics Bloom – Yes or No Yeti is a great game for comprehension, you have to read the phase 3 captions and answer yes or no to the questions – this is a class favourite - https://www.phonicsbloom.com/uk/game/yes-no-yeti?phase=3

· Fantastic for practising tricky words, with videos available for phase 2, 3 and 4 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvMyssfAUx0

Maths – 2D and 3D shape focus

· Can you recognise any 2D shapes?

· Are there everyday objects that look like particular 2D shapes?

· Can you recognise any 3D shapes?

· Are there everyday objects that look like particular 3D shapes? (To assist with these concepts please use shape challenge and activity sheets that have been put on the website for this week’s learning)

· Can you use objects such as sticks and pebbles to make a 2D shape and then tell your adult about your shape? – Think about the sides and corners of the shape – how many are there and are they straight or curved?

For an extra maths challenge – Can you count in 2s, 5s and 10s? Can you write your 2s, 5s and 10s?

Arts and Crafts Ideas

· Tape Resist Art (inspired by Mondrian Art) – Using masking tape, stick down several pieces of tape across an A4 page and then using watercolour paint or watered down acrylic paint, paint in the different sections that are separated by the tape. After it is finished and dry, carefully remove the pieces of masking tape and you will have your Mondrian inspired masterpiece!

· Gruffalo Shape Art – What shapes are you using?
