Use the questions below to guide your research and building of information. You will develop a display of your choice (handout, infographics, etc.) that exhibits your knowledge of the four crimes against humanity. There are case studies available on the website for 1-3. 1. Holocaust 2. Holodomor 3. Rwanda 4. Contemporary example of your choice Requirements: Who? Describe the victims. Describe the perpetrators. What? What main factors led to the abuses? What ultranationalist policies were used- officially or unofficially? What was the ultranationalist group trying to achieve by committing genocide? Where? Where did the event occur? When? When did the event take place and when did the world react to the event? Why? Why did one group resort to policies of genocide? o Why was it given its name? How? How did the genocide continue without other nations preventing it or stopping it? How? How is the crime recognized? Your Final Document: • You can display your knowledge anyway that you choose (handout/CaH, infographic/CaH, etc.) • Include images • Make sure all information is correct, and that answers are completed to the best of your ability • Ensure you properly cite and reference your information

Ultranationalism and Crimes Against Humanity

Part A: In groups of 4, you will research 4 instances of crimes against humanity. Use the questions below to guide your research and building of information. You will develop a display of your choice (handout, infographics, etc.) that exhibits your knowledge of the four crimes against humanity. There are case studies available on the website for 1-3.

Part B: You have been contacted by a group of people who are interested in creating a lasting and fitting memorial to the victims of the 4th genocide you have studied. Consider yourself hired.

Background: Site Location

o Where will you place your memorial? Inside a building? Outside in a park? Beside an ocean? Research to find a map of your desired location. Copy that map onto your presentation*. Highlight your specific location with a star, arrow, or other means

Research o What has already been done? Find at least three memorials to your cause and

where they are located. Copy the pictures and list their locations (list sources)

Design: Where will your memorial be?

o Use scale drawings (using graphing paper provided and indicate length/ height, etc.)

o List materials used to construct your memorial

o (Memorials may be more than an iron statue; it may include trees, water, walkways, etc.)

o How will you achieve the desired fitting and lasting memorial to the victims of this genocide?

Placard: Every monument created uses a placard (informational board) of some sorts to explain

the reasons behind the memorial. o What will your placard say? o What facts are important?o What language(s), materials, font, etc. will you use?

***This part will be included in your presentation as well as a physical copy on half a poster

Presentations : Ultranationalism and Crimes Against Humanity

Part C: You will be presenting the latest genocide that you have studied and created a memorial for. The presentation should include context and an understanding of how ultranationalism played a role in the devastating consequences.

Essentially, you will be presenting your infographic/handout that you developed in Part A of your respective genocide. This will also act as an opportunity to showcase the memorial that you designed for the victims of the genocide.

Requirements:

1. Present research of a contemporary example of a crime against humanity (Part A)2. Showcase memorial design for respective genocide*

a. You must also submit a half poster version of your memorial’s placard; remember, it must exude realism

3. Remember to include visuals and perhaps a short video 4. Ensure you include appropriate references5. Length: 15 minutes
