Monday Night Jazz time

When it is Monday night that means it is a jazz session time at Gracie’s bar with the

musician David Halliday and the band THEJVQ. With local musician who were seated waiting

to join the band with their instrument everybody enjoys the food and their beer while waiting for

the local musician to joined the band.

At the beginning all the musician was gathering their instrument and went to sit

and have some drink and food watching the NFL game while all the instrument was ready, the

jazz was ready to be played at the end of the game.

Usually the musician played outside the bar at the patio but because of the snow

this time they were playing inside of the bar and like the usual event Monday night at Gracie’s

bar but some Monday there is no jazz session but other special event (like the manager told me).

Many people are used to this jazz session event some came specially to listen the band playing

but other are local musician who came to listen and to joined the band. At the entrance they were

people coming asking for the time that the jazz session will begin and everybody were excited

about it.

When the NFL game was done all the musician stand with their beer and it was

time for the jazz to begin. When the musician started playing they were a box to put money to

support the band and a sheet to fill. They were four musicians David Halliday (playing

saxophone), Courtney Isaiah smith (playing the piano), Stephen Lyman (playing drums) and

Denson Angulo (playing double bass). At one time David Halliday (the one playing saxophone)

stopped to play for a while and went to sit again while three other continued to played. Even

without saxophone the rhythm was good. Twenty minute after David Halliday joined the group

again and when the music was done David welcomed everybody and introduced himself and the

all band and explain what the sheet it was for people who came for the first time and people went

to signed up the sheet. While people were signing up the sheet the band continued to play but

this time without David again.

In the sheet people were supposed to write their name, the instrument that

they want to play and the tittle of the song and they were also a sheet to fill for people who had a

requested song that they wanted the band to play before the local musician joined the group.

when all the requested songs were played David went back to his sit while the band continued to

played while waiting for the local musician who signed up the sheet to joined the band. At one

time the all band stopped to play but Denson Angulo (the one playing double bass) continued for

a while the rhythm was good and David stand and joined the band and all together continued the

song. And when the song was finished it was a break time for the band and the musicians started

to talk to people who participated and back to their sit with their friends eating and drinking.

It was 10:51pm when the break time was over and it it was time for the

musician to go back to play but this time it was whit the local musician who signed up the sheet,

it was time to joined the band. They were those who played guitar others played piano,

saxophone and they were singer as well who sings when the musicians where playing

instruments. Each local musician had twenty minute to played with the band. While the band

were playing with local musician David Halliday left again the band but this time he came with a

other instrument he was playing saxophone anymore but tambourine this time the instrument that

he called himself (dangerous instrument). Before he gets back to his saxophone I had the chance

to interview him about the name of certain instrument that they were using then he told me to be

careful with the tambourine because it can ruin the rhythm if you don’t use it properly.

At one-time local musician who signed up to joined the band took over and

the band were watching them playing together for a while and musician were back playing along

with the local musician. It was almost 12am when all the local musician was done and went back

to their sit. The band continued to played some other song because it was the end of the jazz

session performance. And David Halliday left again the group and came back to the sing an old

school song when the song was finished, Courtney Isaiah Smith (the one playing piano) start to

sing while playing piano, and at 12:36am it was the end of the jazz session and David

reintroduced himself and the band again and invite people to joined them the following Monday

for another jazz session event.
