Steve Kerby

In November, 2008, we sent a survey to all faculty members who taught at least one course during the calendar year 2008.

Perhaps the first—and most interesting-- finding was how many different instructors teach at least once course at McDaniel in one full calendar year: 503.

Of those 503 instructors, 233 replied to the survey.

Question One.

A. Do you use Blackboard? 79% (185) :Yes 19% (46) :No 01% (2 ) :No Reply

NOTE: Based on Blackboard statistics, I estimate that between 350 and 400 different instructors

use Blackboard in a calendar year. In looking at the responses to question one, we see that 79% of those who answered the

survey use Blackboard. If the percentages hold for those who did not answer the survey, we can estimate that 393

(79% of 501) different faculty members use Blackboard each year.

Question Two: Are there any other ways you use Blackboard (such as for group / collaborative projects, peer review, online classes, guest speakers, video sharing, etc. )? If so, could you tell us briefly what you do?

112 people responded. Groups, collaboration, and peer review were mentioned a number of times. The complete list of comments is below.

Announcements Calendar (master schedule of collaborative mentoring sessions) At this time I do not. They do their collaboration on their own. BB is essential to teaching our online graduate courses. Graduate students are actively

seeking online programs and have not come to us because we don't offer enough. We use Bb for collaborative projects for lesson delivery--for every aspect that occurs in an f2f class.

Blackboard's upgrade left me in the dust. I have no access to broadband at home which is where I do most of my class prep/work/etc.

Collaborative projects peer review publication of student work video sharing. COM 3337 Scriptwriting -- students need to post their 10-12 page drafts each week and other

class members review and critique it each week Currently students in both classes access BB to view my lesson plans on Course Documents.

We have done video sharing as well (exclusively during student presentations not my own yet).

Curriculum implementation FYS orientation Department communications Evidence of impact of technology for department

communication and data collection (NCATE team will have access to our site.) Education and GPS use Bb extensively for NCATE committees etc. Every semester is different; we may use Blackboard or not. External links -- they are essential for some of my classes. For my department to share documents and send emails out to all majors. For Student Academic Support Services registration purposes. General announcements; explanatory notes; resources contributed by class members. Group pages virtual classroom and office hours group projects and peer review among students group projects online classes sharing links within the PLS courses. I like that I can share

current resources beyond the course material Group work for group discussion; group work for interns placed around the country;

department site for disseminating dept. info and handbooks; online course completely -- no hybrid; video sharing with ASL clips.

group work peer review Group/collaborative projects; online courses I am a student teacher supervisor. Blackboard is limited to one instructor so I am blocked

except for items that are shared with other instructors in 552 and 553. All of my work is in the student teacher's classroom.

I am considering its future use. I am happy with what I am using it for. I want to try the gradebook feature. I am new to Blackboard I have not have the time to experiment with all the benefits offered by

that program. I don't know if this counts. I teach creative writing and once I had all my students write a

short piece in which a vase was an object of conflict. I took the vase into class letting each student hold and study it. Then I posted photos of it on blackboard so they could use them as they wrote their assignments.

I have a site for my advisees -- I use this to email them and I use the discussion board to have them sign up for advising appointments. I also post announcements about jobs.

I have considered using it but as of yet have not... I have done so in the past (see below) but not currently.

Page 3: stevekerby.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web viewQuestion Two: Are there any other ways you use Blackboard (such as for group / collaborative projects, peer review, online classes,

I have group projects where students use the blackboard with each other and through the media center.

I have taken an online class using blackboard I have the students post their assignments in the discussion board area then we discuss and

refer to them in class. I have used BB for peer review. I ask the students to post their papers or shorter excerpts like

the thesis statement and then their peer review group replies to the thread with their comments.

I have used video sharing but only in one class. I only had 1 student this semester but would like to use the Blog feature in the future. I use

Blogging through other sites. I taught in several places in the Academic Hall none with a smart cart. I brought everything with me including an LCD projector. I have not however been able to get onto your system through Clean Access with my laptop. I also use Wikispaces with students to edit lessons etc.

I post the answers to the homework on Blackboard. I provided several websites for teachers that gave them access to professional journals and

materials that we would use in our class that they could then use with their students. I sometimes use the groups for class projects; I definitely use the discussion board for peer

review; and I use the links page to direct them to things on the Web. I teach an online course for McDaniel using Blackboard. We meet for an orientation session

and after that everything is online. All classroom discussions are through the discussion board all lessons are posted in Blackboard. Projects are presented and peer reviewed through Blackboard as well.

I use Bboard for my online classes and f2f. For the online classes we do all of the above. Bboard provides my f2f with a paperless class. We do small group discussions and collaborative projects.

I use Blackboard for video sharing peer review and collaboration on team projects. I use Blackboard primarily for my first year seminar and mainly for emails and

announcements. I use it as a grad student to turn in assignments but know very little about how to set it up to

use as an instructor. I use it as a portal to my webpage and the course Wiki site. I use it for surveys. I've

embedded my google calendar into the announcements for scheduling. I used to use safeassign and emailing but I find it's easier to have an email list on my mail and I used tests instead of assignment links now for turning in assignments because assignment links won't let them resubmit assignments and many of my assignments are recursive. So you can't use the Safe assign as easily with a test as an assingment. I also notice that safeassign isn't working now anyway.

I use it for advising. I post a model schedule for the physical education minors. I use it most for putting up musical examples (mp3) for students to listen to linking to websites

i want them to see and occasionally embedding a youtube video. I would like to be able to continue using the portfolio section of blackboard but the sharing mechanism on that does not work and causes way more headaches than it is worth so i won't be using that again until its fixed.

I use the calendar to show assignmnets for the class each week. I use the discussion boards for students to select project topics. That way each topic is unique

and it saves my time monitoring the process of finding unique topicsa and it's fair b/c

Page 4: stevekerby.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web viewQuestion Two: Are there any other ways you use Blackboard (such as for group / collaborative projects, peer review, online classes,

"first post/first pick" I use the dropbox a lot for draft/comments on papers. I use the group pages for students to collaborate on pages the wikis have been offered to

students. I have also found BB to be a useful backup tool for possible snow dates. I do offer two to three classes a semester online for students to be familiar with the online tools and resources. In addition we have utilized another tool called Elluminate to hold online conversations in which we can all communicate (similar to a conference call) but I can have a powerpoint visual with the communication.

I use the Group pages to do peer reviews with students in groups. I use: external links for video clips and links to websites make group pages for collaborative

projects I want to but have encountered too many glitches. Maybe I just don't know how. This year I

had trouble uploading documents so haven't used it. But in the past: I've used Blackboard in an FYS Class The Media as Storyteller and had students write a soap opera adding to each other's previous episodes. I use podcasts that are at NPR and post the link on Blackboard.

I will likely start using blackboard next semester for some basic tasks. I would like to incorporate more video clips - but haven't at this time. I would like to learn to use it in more ways. I would love to set up penpal correspondence between students. I'll investigate the Safe Assign. I'm promising myself that I'll take some days summer of 2009 to actually learn how to use

Blackboard more fully! In our portfolio class I encouraged students to use Blackboard forums for peer review of work. In the Reacting to the Past games I will use Blackboard to have students post papers to which

the entire class can read and respond. My courses are fully online courses. All content and class activities (including small group

projects) and most class communication are conducted via Blackboard N/A - have used ePortfolio in the past; used WordPress instead this semester NA NA No No no no No but I would like to learn how to make more effective and interactive use of Blackboard No not at this time no- that's it No. no. No. (I.e. there aren't other ways I use Blackboard. It's not that I use it but I won't tell you

what I do.) Nope Nope! Just the basics! Not currently but thinking of how to do so in the future. not really. I tend to operate on the KISS principle.

Page 5: stevekerby.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web viewQuestion Two: Are there any other ways you use Blackboard (such as for group / collaborative projects, peer review, online classes,

not yet although I hope to do more Not yet.. I am still learning the basics of BB. NOTE: I did not know about Safe Assign. I use Blackboard for group projects and peer review.

I set up Draft Circles in the Groups Area and students use File Exchange to post and download papers. They prepare a critique prior to meeting; I facilitate the face-to-face meetings because these are freshmen. If they were upperclassmen I might suggest using the discussion board (I could review comments instead of sitting down with the group). I have also required students to post online answers to discussion questions and to craft 2 replies to other students' postings. This approach has been a useful way to get concrete responses to readings I've assigned. In my legal writing course it has been useful to use online statutes and regulations because the books are MASSIVE and dense. Regs and laws work in a naturally hypertexted manner so students can actually understand legal research better by seeing it onscreen. Finally I've found Blackboard to be a useful clearinghouse for research support (sample documents PowerPoints articles) and for posting video that I want students to analyze for class.

once in a while collaborative projects Online class online classes Online classes would be particularly useful: (1)during severe weather incidents and (2)

conducting an online class. I would also use Blackboard for collaborative projects. Other features are used on an ad hoc basis - depending on whether it is a short summer

session or standard fall/spring semester. P.S. I do use Blackboard with another school for an online course. peer review peer review PeerReview Posting daily assignments (ie post text describing the assignment - reading short writing

assignments etc) after each class meeting Professional Study Groups: Book Club Project small group collaboration in some classes peer review and comment on lessons/projects Some faculty give me access to their blackboard sites so I can see what their assignments are

and what their students are doing so I can be of better assistance to the students. Students are posting videos they've uploaded to YouTube on our Discussion Board so that

they can view one another's work. The ed admin program is preparing to use blackboard for discussion groups and other class

activities. Technical assistance is crucial to the success of that plan. The graduate gerontology program is developing all courses to be available on line so we use

it present information video sharing collaborative papers etc. Blackboard and Steve's help are instrumental in making this program work!!

This is the first class in which I have used Blackboard and plan to incorporate this technology more into future classes.

This is two To communicate and share resources with the off campus instuctors who teach 504. By the

end of Jan. powerpoints and handouts will be on Blackboard. To post internet links I use to show clips in class To post what groups students have signed up for (for debate topics in my case). I put it in

Page 6: stevekerby.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web viewQuestion Two: Are there any other ways you use Blackboard (such as for group / collaborative projects, peer review, online classes,

Discussion Board but I'm not sure they can modify a list of groups I posted there but at least they can check what they signed up for . . .b/c they forget!

video sharing Video sharing (I would like to use peer review for my syntax class but I don't know how to do

it) video sharing (posting of Youtube segments) and video sharing through Wimba video sharing use PBWiki instead of the wiki in Bb We are in the process of designing a survey for the 9/11 class that surveys the effectiveness of

each of the methods of delivering material that we employed in the class. We have used Blackboard extensively in our first-year student advising and orientation

process. Blackboard is one of the first portals for new McDaniel students to learn about majors residence halls the summer reading etc.

We have used it for peer review of projects. I also hold 1 online class suing blackboard. We use Blackboard in the C&I program as a means to communicate with our adjunct faculty

and share resources. We recently held an adjunct faculty meeting at which faculty could get training on some of Blackboards more advanced features including Wikis and video sharing. We encourage all of our instructors to use Blackboard as much as possible. We are also in the process of using Blackboard as a means to streamline our communication with all of our C&I students.

Whenever I assign group projects I create group pages. I encourage the students to use this feature to help them communicate during the semester. They seem to find this option useful.

Question Four: Do you use Classroom Technology? (Smart Classrooms?)

54% (126) : Most Classes 15% (36) : More than three times 12% (24) : Once or twice 15% (35) : Never… although this question might be tainted by the fact that a number of

Question Nine: Can you think of ways you use technology to encourage student collaboration?

I am always open to new ideas. (1) Have them do Powerpoint presentations (they love to present); (2) have them do news

reporting from target-language countries for ex.: this term (Spr 09) they are all Bureau Chiefs for a different Latino country reporting periodically on news from there.

(See answer to number 10). arranging and composition of music As noted above I use the Groups Area for peer review and I sometimes use the Discussion

Board. My Legal Writing course will use online collaboration to modify documents designed for NGOs.

Backboard discussions. BB discussion board; posting student presentation and extra materials relevant for course. Blackboard discussion boards and e-mail. Blogs Chat room regarding assignment/dialogue and analysis; use of low tech along with high tech

(not all presentations have to be PowerPoint). Collaborative wiki with Dr. Brett McMillan in Biology. Define what you exactly mean by student collaboration. Discussion based classes that use the blackboard discussion board option to get students to

both discuss and eventually come to their group answers online (one collective answer per group).

Discussion Board discussion board and group assignments discussion board conversations Discussion Board Group Projects Discussion Board is very interactive obviously. Discussion board. email Email and discussion boards. Other than that not reallly. E-mail. Underappreciated but essential. For trip courses in particular we make extensive use of photos and more recently video much

of it shot underwater. All my research students use online bioinformatic resources (genome browsers etc.). I use Keynote to prepare my lectures and take a laptop to my classes to present them. I do export them to Powerpoint to post on Blackboard.

For writing students it might be helpful to have a forum after the class ends. So many students struggle to make time for writing and to get positive feedback. If I've done my job right by the end of the semester the students have created a productive place for writing and editing. If they had a forum to talk with each other trade ideas and post stories they could continue that.

gathering data for special projects I've used google docs. group projects and collective note-taking in wikis data cloud generation in delicious group projects to share with others via the internet group work in preparation for debates; providing feedback on video producations; I am interested in eventually doing a wiki. I just haven't taken the time to learn how. I am not sure how to use this area. I assign groups projects in which students must use video and ppt technology. I bring in TIVO clips of courtroom tv shows to demonstrate persuasion. It is probably illegal but

it is effective. I can think of many ways to do so in general but I do not use such in my class because it is not

appropriate for the way the course is structured. I do not at this point but would love some ideas on how to do it! I do not teach very much. If I did I'm sure I would use more multimedia. I do not understand the question: collaborate with whom? Students work with faculty in their

senior papers which is a type of collaboration. I don't try. I encourage students to think of themselves as course resources for each other - collaborating

and consulting on work sharing web resources etc. We only meet as a class once a week so technology links us the rest of the time.

I give references that can be googled to do on line research some of which is downloaded and used in sketchbooks. Usually each semester we gather the most helpful sites and share them.

I have done so in the past -- by setting up groups in Bb and having students collaborate online but I have not done this yet at McDaniel.

I have my students run climate models on computers as group projects. I have projects that require the students to make video or power Point presentations.

Page 9: stevekerby.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web viewQuestion Two: Are there any other ways you use Blackboard (such as for group / collaborative projects, peer review, online classes,

I have shared rubrics using Google Docs. I have students write a scientific paper in groups so that could be handled/passed back and

forth electronically (and probably is by the students). I have them do online and library research on their own outside of class. I have them review websites that are designed for students to learn mathematics. We then

discuss the positive and negative aspects of the sites. I have them use the technology when their write thier papers. I just started using wikis in place of traditional group presentations. I often use the smart classrooms to access Washington County Public Schools D2L website to

show relevant examples of school counseling: PDFs; powerpoints; excel; word; video clips; web links etc.

I only do a couple group projects and I encourage them to email each other and use the discussion board.

I really like the discussion board and could see the benefit of branching off to try a wiki. It's best when the students interact and can share their experiences.

I set up group pages for different assignments so groups can work together. My students use their own discussion board file sharing and emailing. I'm experimenting with wikis but haven't used them in a course yet - I think I'll use them for peer review of work.

I show students some of the freebie software available especially from Google (blogs wikisopen office...). Students are reluctant to adopt new technologies. There is a sizable minority that "hate computers" lack of adequate technology instruction and do not use the technology (email office programs...) effectively or well.

I use it in class often which shows them how useful and how easy it is. I assign exercises that involve using the resources on line such as podcasts ngo websites literature reviews etc...

I use most of these technologies in my job but they are not available in the locations that McDaniel assigns me to teach various cohort groups (5-6 per year). I have many great PowerPoints etc. that I have no ability to use.

I use technology that is available to me in the schools where the class is held which is quite limited. We have VHS DVD and overheads available.

I utilize Elluminate Wikis for group projects BB for group chats and sharing of documents. The students find these tools to be useful in assisting each other in sharing resources and information without being face to face. I have also had students who have utilized other online meeting rooms to faciliate their group projects (WebMeeting).

I was planning to use a WIki this semester in an SIS class but because it's a new class we didn't have time to really figure out what to do and how to do it. I did some training on it with Teresa ( I think it was she).

I will rotate students through my lesson plans using the smartbox (collecting research dvd vhs utube etc.)

I would encourage the teachers here to use it as part of thier grading system for them to use this resource.

I would like to use podcasts for projects involving interviews and/or short oral reports on topics related to courses on latin american and latino communities

I'd like to but I'm easing out of the gate. If I had access to a flip camera a video camera for the computer and access to a lab with

photostory software I'd be using this in my classes right now. I'm eventually going to add lesson plans that the candidates have taught to Blackboard so that

the younger candidates can see the examples. I introduced Scholar to the motor

development students but need to become an expert to better help them. I'm not sure of your definition of "technology" but the video production lab in

Lewis B4 is jam-packed with technology (cameras edit systems video projector microphones etc.) that we regularly use in COM 2250 TV Production and in special topics courses like Documentary Production Audio Production In-Depth Interview Production and the Jan Term Filmmaking Practicum.

In ed admin classes and the internship we require a manuscript format when using the computer to prepare assignments.

In our lab results class for Cognitive Psychology we display online results for everyone to see and discuss.

I've set up group pages on BlackBoard to help groups of students coordinate group projects.. but that's about it.

I've tried many ways with varying success - discussion board before that an email list etc. Haven't yet done the social networking thing.

Learning partners are encouraged to provide peer editing of their required projects. more friendlier accessibilities for visual viewers... Mostly by the above. Just as in the classroom it is sometimes a challenge to get students to

participate in e-discussion in a meaningful way. mp3 files to comment on student work Use of class wikis and blogs My classes are all technology - all the time. My classes use technology for collaboration on an increasingly frequent basis. This semester

WordPress was used in the HRD Portfolio course for posting and responding to peer entries. My Environmental health course revolves around a wiki that my students are creating.

(www.bio2209environmentalhealth.pbwiki.com) I plan to have students keep a blog as a low stakes writing assignment in some of my classes.

My FYS class requires students to submit a weekly comic strip to a web page I created. My students submit three different weekly assignments to different forums on the Discussion

Board. One of the three is to react to someone's weekly reflection after reading several or all of them.

no no no No No No. No. But students themselves connect through technology on group work. No--but I would love to hear what others are doing (at McDaniel and beyond) and get some

ideas! None other than email right now. Starting next fall when my son goes off to college I will have

more time to begin to understand and use what is available. Nope Not beyond those I've already mentioned. I'm still learning. Not currently. Not is this part-time job... In my full-time job I facilitate a D2L community. I have learned that

platform and am comfortable with it. I am VERY uncomfortable with new technologies and since Blackboard training was cancelled in the fall of 2007 I just haven't had time to

the screen. Only the discussion boards. Otherwise technology seems to be yet another impediment to

collaboration. Other than Blackboard I get students to share web sites and critique them in groups and for

future use as resources for clients. Our introductory programming course meets for 90 minutes per week in the Lewis G5 lab

where students work to solve specific lab exercises. In some cases I ask the students to pair up and work together to write programs. However I suppose the technology isn't what enables the collaboration; the task just happens to be computer-related.

Student class presentations are almost always with power point or flash drive technology. Students download images from Artstor and other sites that they use in class presentations.

Students are also given the option to use their own computers to record their speeches and a webcam to video tape. Their recordings and videos are then emailed to me.

Students are encouraged to use PowerPoint or other technology in presenting their final paper/project to the class. I am being assisted in developing a PowerPoint presentation for an international academic meeting in January that will later be used with my English 1002 classes.

Students Collaborate with me and with each other to build a story that has been well crafted. Once they craft that story they use Technology to tell it. Technology gives them the ability not just to tell their stories but to give their stories a look feel and sound.

Use of Blackboard calendar to schedule collaborative sessions for students Use of Blackboard or Wikis for study groups. We use assistive technology via the computer for students with disabilities. Well I am the Reacting to the Past DIVA at McDaniel so that is the way I focus on collaborative

learning which I know is not *your* way but there are many ways to do it. well i've tried to get them to collaborate on portfolios by commenting on what they see but

the sharing mechanism on blackboard portfolios doesn't work so this has not been possible. I've tried discussion board to have them talk to each other but that is immensley time consuming to oversee and i don't have that time. I would be interested in something like the podcast but i do not relish the idea of teaching them how to make it or use the programs necessary to make it. (I checked podcasts above because i have students listen to podcasts but i do not have them make podcasts).

We're trying to use Second Life in my conversation class and hopefully next semester with the technology in place we'll be able to do more with it. I do have students writing blogs in some courses I teach but haven't taught lately. Next semester we'll use them again.

What does “collaboration” mean exactly? Does that mean working with the professor other students?

Wikis and Google Docs. Wikispaces and Blogs mostly but also email. writing / sharing potential exam questions Yes in the VITA program.

Question Ten: Can you tell us any other way you use technology/computers/software in teaching? For instance, do you use SPSS? Excel? Any specific software program (math, language, science, art, music)? Do you use Smart Boards, clickers? Any other piece of software that helps you in your teaching and/or student collaboration?

Yes. I would like the G5 Lab to have an large external hard drive that the students could back up their projects on. I also wish that the lab had FCP keyboards and more internal hard drive space ;-)

Yes I now need to learn more about podcasting video conferencing and teaching students how to use make their own instructional movies using moviemaker and photostory. I'd like for

every teacher to have a remote control for the powerpoint. I'm noticing that my students--when giving their presentations--are standing beside the blackbox instead of directly in front of the class. If I had a remote device their teaching would improve.

would like to use safe assign more but was unclear/had impression won't work on attached files???? have reached personal crunch point on amount of time for new mcdaniel plan (SIS junior writing) and technology used now that actually haven't been able to use the podcast/wiki things that i hoped to do from last faculty training summer. so guess i am pretty much maxed out on keeping up with new technology/teaching interface for a few years...

Would like to have access to Smartboards and clickers. Would need to have more training on each.

White Boards in classrooms We use the software Mathematica extensivly in almost all Physics classes. We use the

computers to collect experimental data via interfaces in the Physics labs. The data is analyzed with Excel an Mathematica.

We use excel to manipulate data. Visual Presenter Use of gaming within the courses to demonstrate concepts for students this is extra this is extra This doesn't really apply to McDaniel as I am limited to instructional tools made avaialable in

my borrowed classroom off-campus. I would use the SMART Board and WEB 2.0 tools if I had more instruction on them and they were easily available.

The Smart Classrooms met my needs sufficiently. The smart boards that my son's fifth grade classroom uses that I have used in giving

presentations to his class. The homework for my Aural Musicianship classes consists of passing through levels in an ear

training software program called MacGamut. Students purchase their own copies register and load them on their own machines and hand in reports periodically throughout the semester.

The classroom where I teach does not have a smartboard. The computer in the classroom does not have Quicktime access which frustrates me most of the times. I insist to use Quicktime for sign language videos but have no access since the computer is way too old.

Thanks for allowing me to utilize blackboard! SPSS Clickers Software data bases that support evaluation of student performance at K-12 level (word study

project). smartboards; overhead reader with computer for read alouds; more software that is used in

school systems to enhance learning; Smart boards would be nice - however I know that these are not feasible for adjunct

professors teaching in satellite locations. Thanks for asking though. smart Boards would be great!! Smart boards atomic learning united streaming wiki space See #9. Scholar workshop would help me. Time is the tough part. Puters are so old in The Studio I can't even access Archway to grade: have to go to Peterson.

We have been promised a smart classroom but not yet: still using slides. Need up date on Blackboard so I can set up new courses transfer materials email students. Need more space as much of what I use to teach is visual. Would use power points if better informed and had

practice making them. Could not have been as effective in Budapest without Steve's help and the Tech Grant that gave us the week to work together. THANKS!

Prosumer 3-chip digital video cameras to replace the 6 year old consumer-grade digital 8mm cameras we currently use in video production lab (Lewis B4); also need to upgrade to a digital video switcher in this facility

Perhaps it's been offered but I missed it - I'd be interested in learning how to make flashier powerpoint presentations. Also the most recent version of Excel has no similarity to previous versions and several of us might benefit from a walk through the newest version particularly graphing aspects.

Nothing about which I am aware. Not that I can think of. I could use some more background on how to use wikis and how to get

students blogging. I think that I could be using these but just haven't figured them out yet. Not that I can think of. But I am very old fashioned and probably do not realize how many

fantastic technology resources there are. A friend of mine teaches at Rutgers and she says she uses Second Life a lot.

Not that I can think of. not currently Not at this time. None that I am aware of. None I can think of. No. I am an "old dog" and I do not come by "new tricks" easily. This

is probably my final semester as adjunct lecturer. Please don't share this information as I have not informed the professors that work with me/support me.

No. No no No No My spanish class uses Ventanas software from Vista Higher Learning. In class we use a lot of

the audio and video material from the program. My homework assignments are online (quia books) My class uses graphic calculators almost every time we meet. more interactive white boards. I see a great deal of potential in making lectures more

adaptable while keeping the rich multimedia approach I favor. Most of my classes however have been headed towards the seminar format in recentyears and ironically away from technology.

McDaniel has more than enough technology and has offered classes in the things that I do not yet know how to use. It is my own fault that I am not up to speed on PowerPoint and Blackboard but I intend to work on it.

Looking forward to learning more in coming years. Keep pushing ideas forward. I forget to take the classes but if the reminders keep nudging

me I'll come around. I don't even always need to take a class or have training; rather I need to be reminded to think about how I'm using technology and to imagine other ways tech might increase student learning and collaboration.

It is difficult for me to keep up with what is already available for example all the features of Blackboard. But I'm getting there.

Page 15: stevekerby.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web viewQuestion Two: Are there any other ways you use Blackboard (such as for group / collaborative projects, peer review, online classes,

InterWrite boards More advanced training on utilzing the different components of BB. Steve Kirby has been a wonderful support to me as I have learned and implemented BB in the classroom.

internet use in class for research In the Biomechanics class that I will be teaching in the spring I will be using the Dartfish

software available on-line (30 day free trial) and for purchase (which I may encourage our department to do!).

In our assessment course we use the individual software that comes with tests to discuss scoring conventions and to analyze data.

I'm so frustrated with my inability to use Blackboard. I would like to attach PowerPoint lectures for my classes. I teach film. My files tend to be graphic heavy and are difficult to attach to emails (otherwise I could mass email them out to students). I haven't found anyone who could help me with this. The faculty that I've asked seem to be as puzzled as me and have resigned to not using it. The faculty members in other departments that I'm told use it for file attachments haven't gotten back to me when I query them for assistance. I can't seem to connect with a Help Desk person for Blackboard. If you know who I could connect with to solve this problem I'd really appreciate getting their contact information.

I'm not crazy about the new gradebook on Blackboard. I'm looking for a good sound editing program. Use i-tunes; use excel for grading purposes to

create class contact sheets organize french scene charts; use you-tube sometimes for video clips (well that's a web site not a program but...)

I'm guessing Camtasia would be useful for people but only if they know why they might attend the workshop beforehand (So something like "How Technology can make lecture classes more student-centered.") Faculty could have their lectures watched outside of class as homework and then in class other discussion-type stuff could take place. I know I already mentioned this but I'd like to see a summer technology institute focused on Second Life where there would be a group of us working on developing classes and feeding off of other's ideas. Second Life is intimidating on its own. But if 4-5 of us worked on it together we could build avatars and interact together in the space.

I'm co-teaching a class Fall 09 and we hope to use the 'clickers' in that class. Otherwise I try as much as possible to switch during my lectures between powerpoint internet dvd etc. The more technology I have in the classroom the better since it really is the language the students understand best.

I'd love to have a remote clicker for my ppts... and it would be nice to have a set of those handheld every student response systems to borrow on occasion.

I'd like to see Teaching Language 1101 For Dummies in the language lab--our textbooks don't particularly permit 'extras' in a full syllabus nor provide a model for lab-based teaching. I know I know! You've shown us how several times--but I tend to forget steps in accessing Genesis “tricks”;

I'd like spsss for the biology laptops. I would still love our students to have access to their own tablet PCs for in-class interaction.

(Esther and I have talked before about the capability of the Classroom Presenter software that allows students to wirelessly transmit comments/questions/solutions to the instructor during class to be displayed on the projector by the instructor. At this point we already have the capability for students to transmit information using their own laptops but without the drawing capability of a tablet the kinds of submissions they can create are limited.)

I would really like to learn web page design and administration.

Page 16: stevekerby.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web viewQuestion Two: Are there any other ways you use Blackboard (such as for group / collaborative projects, peer review, online classes,

I would really appreciate a class or two over the summer on how other instructors are using technology (here and beyond)--kind of like a survey of new technologies/strategies. I need to see what it allows others to do in order to really grasp how it might benefit my classes. Then I could see what might work for me and sign up for those specific workshops with IT.

I would love to use a smart board and clickers if I knew how to use it. I would love to have access to a SmartBoard. I would love a training on how to use Blackboard! I have an interest in using it but right now I

don't have the time to fumble my way through it! I would like to use Blackboard. McDaniel has offered training but I have not been able to

participate due to other commitments. I would like to receive training on Wikis. I think it has been offered but I am typically too busy

during the semester to go. A training in Jan term or summer would be nice. I would like to learn some finer points of blackboard - e.g. how to create date limited

dropboxes for online problem submission. I would like to incorporate more technology however the off-campus sites do not have

technology available for our use. Next semester I plan to bring a laptop and presenter for more consistent use of Powerpoint.

I would like to find out more information on training for specific programs and how to incorporate them into my lessons. Is this information posted?

I would like to be trained on the discussion board and any student collaboration pieces. Also on the safe assign.

I would like additional instruction on the use of Blackboard - especially the new features. These would have to be offered online.

I would *love* to use clickers & smart boards everything!! I will use SPSS when teaching Psychology Methods II. In my research with students I use a

specialized software program called AssayZap. I will start using I flip cameras as way to turn video counseling sessions in I want to make greater use of Black Board for discussion postings and possibly other uses I

may not be aware of at the moment. I WANT TO BE ABLE TO CAPTURE VIDEO CLIPS AND HAVE THEM ON BLACKBOARD INSTEAD OF

CUEING TAPES (THAT ARE DETERIORATING BTW) I use SPSS but rarely. I use spss and excel extensively for my stat classes and managerial econ. I use my own

software for simulations in intermediate micro and industrial organization. I use blackboard only for committee work the new curriculum. I already used my own web page for student communication before blackboard and liked the control I have there and the reliable presence of it.

I use software packages such as Mathematica Mathcad Exel Datastudio etc for collecting and analyzing data for labs.

I use Mathematica in several of my classes and I have asked students to use the Computer Lab for take home assignments.

I use excel and had students fill out a spreadsheet I produced as part of a course project. The spreadsheet was posted on blackboard and they had to download it and modify it.

I use computers heavily for lab purposes. Much of that is the computers necessary to run the equipment in lab but I also use computer simulation software as well.

I use an interactive whiteboard with the senteo clickers. I use all microsoft products with the presentation material.

Page 17: stevekerby.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web viewQuestion Two: Are there any other ways you use Blackboard (such as for group / collaborative projects, peer review, online classes,

I use all components of Office depending on the course being taught. I encourage my participants to use technology for our graduate class as well as for their own teaching.

I think you probably already have a wiki course but if not that is a course I would be interested in taking. Thanks.

I teach EPE activity courses and use dvd's regularly. I use a tv/dvd set up on the upper deck of the pool.

I put in a ticket to have the technology handle new window formats .pptx and .docx Not sure if ticket was addressed.

I play VHS and DVD films and music. Lately I've been using You Tube to show music videos news reports political statements and historical footage from Eastern Europe.

I need some help with a way to let me know papers are in the dropbox or some tutoring on another option. Students don't let me know they've sent something and I don't know it's there.

I know that this isn't really the question asked but . . . It drives me crazy that people are kicked out of Blackboard when they graduate/leave the college and all their work disappears. I NEED to see their grades papers and discussion board contributions both for my future classes and for when I write these folks letters of recommendations. Similarly as the courses are only on Blackboard for a short time I don't see how I am going to plan my classes for for next semester as 2 of them have been archived on Blackboard.

I introduce the students in Math Structures II to Equation Editor and to the drawing tools in Word. Equation Editor is really a very useful tool especially for future teachers who will probably be creating handouts for use in their classes. BTW I'm a mac user but I've been able to show the students Equation Editor within Office but the most recent version(s) of Office/Word don't seem to have Equation Editor! Is this correct OR am I confused?

I have used SAS in the past to demonstrate how statistical programming works. I don't teach a class. All of my work is in the schools with the supervision of practicum

students. I do. However I cannot remember the name of the program. Some of the teachers in my

classes have demonstrated them when they make presentations. I remember asking and then promptly forgetting.

I do use Excel for grades. I demonstrate graphic design techniques using the Adobe software and pdfs. I believe this is offered but I have not been able to clear time to attend. I would like to

develop skills in web-page creation. I am very interested in utilizing technology more in the classroom and using it to get students

engaged but I am an adjunct English instructor and need some training or idea workshops etc...

Higher end photo and video editing on the Mac platform. Excel sheets Excel EndNote CS3 Skype Kindle I wish we could require students to 1) come to campus with a

laptop 2)bring their laptops to class and 3) have wireless Internet access in classrooms. Do you have student response systems we can use (clickers)? We have those in some

classrooms in the school system and it would be great if there was one I could use. Do we have access to smartboard interactive whiteboards on campus? Digital Whiteboards! (And when's that holographic projector coming in?) Clickers

Page 18: stevekerby.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web viewQuestion Two: Are there any other ways you use Blackboard (such as for group / collaborative projects, peer review, online classes,

Besides training assistance is very important for me. I am a constant but slow learner of technology

As an adjunct I have not really looked to the college to provide such things. (See above.) I would love a tutorial on Second Life and how to use the McDaniel space to

teach. (Steve has offered to help me; I haven't arranged a time yet.) “Extra credit”? The ARS (above) I need to use technology and like what it can do but I often get frustrated so revert to the old

fashioned way. Using EYE TV to record Tv programs and edit them and put the edits on DVDs -- this is my greatest need. So I need to learn to use the video editing software on my computer.

I may enjoy a brush up on advanced excel use that is about it.

Extra: Is there a technology resource that you would like to use, but do not have access to at McDaniel? Training you would like to have, but has not been offered?

29 people answered this question:

a laptop would be nice Linda Vanhart and I are sharing one old computer in the office.... Esther mentioned electronic writing tablets--I don't know much about these but I think they

would be helpful for group work and discussion in my ENG 1101 classes. I am an adjunct professor solely teaching online classes at this time so the classroom uses of

technology do not pertain to me in my McDaniel position. I am doing the best I can with the skills I have and could really benefit from any and all in-

service opportunities. Keep me posted. I am not familiar with some of the technologies you have mentioned here (Smart Boards

Wikis) and I wouldn't mind learning about them. I am not sure if this falls under the auspices of a technology resource but I would find it

tremendously helpful if I could have space on the server that I could use for file storage that would allow me to access them from any computer on or off campus. I have often had the case in class where students have asked questions about a topic and I would love to show them video or data that I have about this particular topic but I don't have access to it because I didn't save it on a jump drive. If faculty had dedicated server space then I would be able to access anything that I have from any of the classrooms.

I am not thrilled with the gradebook program in Blackboard. Integrade is a much easier program to use.

I could use more bb training to use it to fullest potential. I would also participate in any offered pp training or excel and its applications to my work

I haven't used podcasts or Wikis in my class but I would if given the opportunity. I teach at remote locations and it would be great if we had access to the school computer lab and other technology.

I teach at an off-campus site that that does not provide for such technology. I use the overhead projector beacause the room I use has the projector and screen but no

smartboard. I need to write and highlight during my lessons. The teacher candidates also need the smartboard for their presentation/projects but use the overhead.

I want to use Blackboard but I need to schedule a time for one on on instruction. I attended

some workshops a few years ago but when I encountered problems with the technology I gave up.

I wish MacGamut would prepare a version for classroom setting. This would enable me to incorporate the computer work into my class time. I could better monitor their progress and help them with potential program pitfalls

I would like an official training ( areal class) not someone from the dept. telling you how something works on : language lab technology programs and applications.

I would like to be trained on advanced Powerpoint - how to introduce movement sound and video clips into my powerpoint presentations. The students seem very comfortable with the technology. Also in demonstrating survey techniques it would be nice to have access to someone who knows spss.

I would like to hire a student for tutorial in how to use the technology. I would like to see training on newer technology that you suggest might be helpful. Many

“older” instructors may not be aware of cutting edge technology that they could use and would therefore not be able to suggest specific training opportunities.

I would like training on podcast and could use additional training on wikki to use it more effectively.

Need remote clickers for powerpoint presentations in classrooms. No I just need more time to do the things that are offered. However I do wish there were

many more Steve Kerbys to help with online course set up and design. I would like to offer this option at the graduate level more often but my time and Steve's are pretty tight and it can be hard to work through it all with each others' other responsibilities. That said Steve has been FANTASTIC help.

Our courses are all taught off campus so we are limited to the technology available at the high schools where we teach. Thanks for asking!

remote or wireless mouse in smart classrooms. I bring my own but it would be great to have one in each classroom.

Since I am off campus this is limited to what Cecil County Public Schools has. I am on loan to the State Dept. so I have very limited access to smart boards etc. If someone in class has access we use it.

Since I only have a few students each fall I really have not ventured into much besides using what is available. A whiteboard would be a nice thing but with such limited enrollment that is a real frill.

smart boards or the ability to put info from any computer in the lab on the screen video clips Wikis would be a great tool to learn more about! Yes - we'd like smart box in the green room of alumni hall. And - we'd like to update all the

sound equipment on both the mainstage and the understage You do such a great job of offering training and individual help. Can't think of anything more

right now.

CONCLUSION:

It is, of course, risky to assume that the answers from those who did not answer the survey would be consistent with those who did. But based on the above statistics, it is reasonable to assume that:

Page 20: stevekerby.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web viewQuestion Two: Are there any other ways you use Blackboard (such as for group / collaborative projects, peer review, online classes,

79% of instructors use Smart Classroom technology 79% of our instructors use Blackboard 76% use video 74% use PowerPoint 45% use computer labs 11% podcast (NOTE: I don’t really believe that 40-50 faculty actually podcast, I think the

question was misunderstood to mean “do you use audio or refer to podcasts others have done.”)

13% use wikis It is interesting that slightly more instructors report using video than report using PowerPoint,

although both are widely used at McDaniel.
