Tuesday Café OverviewOver the next few days, we will be engaging with a short novelette, “The Tuesday Café” by Don Trembath. This novelette is meant to do two things: 1) give us an insight into the YCJA through the point of view of someone who is engaged with it and 2) make us critics of writing and story element development generally.
Classroom Tasks: Reading:Each day in class, we will be reading the book in our adequately named singular groups. Anything that is not read in class will become your “homework”, however, it is my belief that you will be able to get through each section (see below) in class. The aim of our reading in class will be to enhance fluency and comprehension.
Classroom Tasks: Socratic Seminar Discussions: After having read each section in class, you will have to prepare for the next day’s seminar. It is advised
that you have a both 1) questions and 2) significant ideas prepared for this discussion.
As we will discuss in class, a Socratic seminar is not a debate or meant to be controversial. The goal of the seminar is to advance one another’s learning through dialogue, discussion or conversation. To further aid you, Ms. McGuey will be giving you a theme or topic to focus on as a part of your discussion each day.
You will be partaking in these seminars with your number group, so groups will be larger than your reading groups and each will be 20 minutes in length.
Evaluation:There will be two significant evaluations stemming from this task.
1. Seminars: Ms. McGuey will be making observational notes of your contributions during seminar presentation time. There will also be peer evaluation attached to this. The number and quality of your contributions will be assessed.
2. Reading Response Questions: At the end of the book you will need to complete two reading response questions in the format we have been practicing. These will be submitted for evaluation.
Reading Sections & Dates Tuesday: Chapters 1-4(end) Wednesday: 20-minute seminar, Chapters 5-8(end) Thursday: 20-minute seminar, Chapters 9-12 (end of book) Friday: 20-minute seminar. Reading Response Questions
Reading Theme: Tuesday (Chapters 1-4): In what ways do Chapters 1-4 represent the accuracies and inaccuracies
associated with the Youth Justice System? Consider the court process, the reputation of the young person, the family system, risk factors, trauma and involvement with justice.
