Mrs. Duncan’s Second Grade Class Newsletter August 29, 2016 We are off to a great start this year! Everyone has been busy learning our routines and finding out about second grade expectations. Math This first unit in math has been covering ways to find missing partners and totals, (addends and sums). Now we are covering the strategies of: count all, count on, and make a ten. Reading We are working on our Daily 5 Routines. The kids have worked their stamina up to 18 minutes for Read to Self, and 10minutes so far on Work on Writing. This week, we’ll start Read to Someone. I’ve been busy assessing your child’s reading strengths and areas for improvement, so when we start book clubs, we can really focus on those skills your child needs to be a successful reader and writer. The 5 Finger ‘Just Right’ Book Test We’ve also been discussing ‘just right’ books. They are books that aren’t too easy or too hard for us to read. It is okay to get ‘just for fun’ books – (too hard or too easy,) but it is also important to have ‘just right’ books. The way to test a book is to open to any page and begin reading it. Every time you’re not sure of a word, put up a finger. If you have 0 fingers up, it’s a just for fun book because it is too easy. We are off to a great start this year! Everyone has been busy learning our routines and finding out about second grade expectations.

MathThis first unit in math has been

covering ways to find missing partners and totals, (addends and sums). Now we are covering the strategies of: count all, count on, and make a ten.

ReadingWe are working on our Daily 5

Routines.

The 5 Finger ‘Just Right’ Book Test

We’ve also been discussing ‘just right’ books. If you have 5 or more fingers up, it’s a just for fun book because it is too hard. If you have between 1-4 fingers up, it’s a just right book. When we go to the library to check out, I am encouraging the kids to have a just for fun book and a just right book. You might help your child practice this with some books that they have at home. It’s a great tool to use when you go to the public library, or the bookstore.
