Make and Use Graphs Why learn this skill?

o Recorded data can be plotted on a graph. A graph is a pictorial representation of information recorded in a data table. It is used to show a relationship between two or more different factors. Two common types of graphs are line graphs and bar graphs. In this investigation, you will interpret and construct a line graph and bar graph.

Figure 1. Figure 2.

4

Name: ___________________________Period: _______

------Learn the skill

o When plotting a graph, you must decide: Which variable to place along the x-axis and y-axis.

X-axis = independent variable [Ask yourself, What “I” have control over (ex: time)

Y-axis = dependent variable or what you are measuring (ex: height) The scale of each axis, or how much each line represents.

Scales should be chosen to make the graph as large as possible within the limits of the paper and still include the largest number.

Multiples of 1, 2, 5, or 10 are the easiest.

Practice the Skill – Make a LINE GRAPH of the data in the data table.

The World’s Strongest AnimalsHere is the Top 10 list of world's strongest animals.10 - Grizzly BearThe grizzly bear (Ursus arctos horribilis), also known as the silvertip bear or just the grizzly or North American brown bear, is a subspecies of brown bear (Ursus arctos) that generally lives in the uplands of western North America. Grizzlies are normally solitary, active animals, but in coastal areas, the grizzly lives alongside streams, lakes, rivers, and ponds during the salmon spawn (lay eggs). Every other year, females (sows) produce one to four young (commonly two) which are small and weigh only about 500 grams (one pound). A sow is protective of her offspring and will attack if she thinks she or her cubs are threatened. They are strongest mountain animal, can lift 0.8 times their body weight. Their weight is 1500 pounds and they can lift until 1200 pounds. What is one interesting fact about Grizzles? ________________________________________________________________________________________________

Name: ___________________________Period: _______9 - MusselThe common name mussel is used for members of several families of clams or bivalvia mollusca, from saltwater and freshwater habitats. These groups have in common a shell whose outline is elongated and asymmetrical compared with other edible clams, which are often more or less rounded or oval. The external color of the shell is often dark blue, blackish, or brown, while the interior is silvery. They can hold something two times their body weight. Their shell is very strong, compared to their small body size.Describe what a mussel looks like? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________8 - AnacondaAn anaconda is a large, non-venomous snake found in tropical South America. Although the name actually applies to a group of snakes, it is often used to refer only to one species in particular, the common or green anaconda, Eunectes murinus, which is one of the largest snakes in the world. They can squeeze something the same as their own body weight to death. Their weight can reach 550 pounds. How strong is an Anaconda? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________7 - OxAn ox (plural oxen), also known as a bullock in Australia, New Zealand and India, is a bovine trained as a draft (work) animal. Oxen are used for plowing, for transport (pulling carts, hauling wagons and even riding), for threshing grain by trampling, and for powering machines that grind grain or supply irrigation among other purposes. Oxen may be also used to skid logs in forests, particularly in low-impact, select-cut logging. They can pull and carry something

Name: ___________________________Period: _______1.5 times their body weight across rugged (rough) terrain. Their weight is 1300 pounds and can pull and carry until 2000 pounds. What are three things oxen used for? _____________________________________________________________________________________________________6 - TigerThe tiger (Panthera tigris), a member of the Felidae family, is the largest of the four "big cats" in the genus Panthera. The tiger is native to much of eastern and southern Asia. The tiger is a predator that hunts other animals and is thus a carnivore. The larger tiger subspecies are comparable in size to the biggest extinct felids, reaching up to 3.3 meters (11 ft) in total length, weighing up to 300 kilograms (660 pounds), and having canines up to 4 inches long. Aside from their great bulk and power, their most recognizable feature is a pattern of dark vertical stripes that overlays near-white to reddish-orange fur, with lighter under parts. The most numerous tiger subspecies is the Bengal tiger, while the largest is the Siberian tiger. They can carry something two times their own body weight up a ten foot fence. Their weight is 600 pounds and they can carry until 1200 pounds.Based on the reading, what is a carnivore? _________________________________________________________________________________________________5 - EagleEagles are members of the bird family Accipitridae, and belong to several genera which are not necessarily closely related to each other. Most of the more than 60 species occur in Eurasia and Africa. Outside this area, just two species (the Bald and Golden Eagles) can be found in the United States and Canada, nine more in Central and South America, and three in Australia. They are the strongest bird. They can lift something four times their own body weight during flight. How strong are eagles? _______________________________________________

Name: ___________________________Period: ________________________________________________________________________4 - GorillaGorillas are the largest species of primates. Gorillas are ground-dwelling, predominantly herbivorous (eat plants) apes that inhabit the forests of central Africa. Gorillas are divided into two species and either four or five subspecies. The DNA of gorillas is highly similar to that of a human, between 95 and 99% depending on what is counted, and they are the next closest living relatives to humans after the two chimpanzee species. Gorillas' natural habitats cover tropical or subtropical forests in Africa. They can lift something over 10 times their body weight. Their weight is 450 pounds and can lift up to 4600 pounds. Meaning, they can lift as heavy as 30 adult humans. How are Gorillas related to humans? ______________________________________________________________________________________________________3 - Leaf-cutter AntLeafcutter ants, a non-generic name, are any of 47 species of leaf-chewing ants belonging to the two genera Atta and Acromyrmex. These species of tropical, fungus-growing ants are all from South and Central America and parts of the southern United States. Next to humans, leafcutter ants form the largest and most complex animal societies on Earth. In a few years, the central mound of their underground nests can grow to more than 30 meters (98 ft) across with smaller, radiating mounds extending out to a radius of 80 meters (260 ft), taking up 30 to 600 square meters (320 to 6,500 sq ft) and containing eight million individuals. They can lift something 50 times their own body weight. Imagine a person who can lift a truck. How are ants similar to humans? ________________________________________

Name: ___________________________Period: ________________________________________________________________________2 - ElephantElephants are large land mammals in two genera of the family Elephantidae: Elephas and Loxodonta. Three species of elephant are living today: the African bush elephant, the African forest elephant and the Asian elephant (also known as the Indian elephant). All other species and genera of Elephantidae are extinct, some since the last ice age. Elephants are the largest land animals now living. They typically live for 50 to 70 years, but the oldest recorded elephant lived for 82 years. Elephants are a symbol of wisdom in Asian cultures and are famed for their memory and intelligence, where their intelligence level is thought to be equal to that of dolphins and primates. According to observations, healthy adult elephants have no natural predators, although lions may take calves or weak individuals. They are, however, threatened by human intrusion and poaching. They are the strongest mammals. Their weight is 12000 pounds and they can carry 20.000 pounds. They can carry as heavy as 130 adult humans. What is one interesting fact about elephants? _______________________________________________________________________________________________1 - Rhinoceros BeetleThe rhinoceros beetles or rhino beetles are a subfamily (Dynastinae) of the scarab beetle family (Scarabaeidae). Other common names – some for particular groups of rhino beetles – are for example Hercules beetles, unicorn beetles, horn beetles, or Bess Bugs. There are over 300 known species of rhino beetles. They are not only the strongest insect but also the strongest animal compared to body weight. They can lift something 850 times their own weight. How strong are beetles? _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________What surprised you about this article? ___________________________________

Bess Bugs LabToday we are going to be working with bess bugs, also known as Odontotaenius

disjunctus. These bugs resemble large beetles and have shell-like forewings called

elytra. Adult beetles can grow up to 4 cm long; and each beetle has 6 legs and 3 body

segments. These insects are very important in the recycling of dead wood and there

are only two species found in the United States. The most recognizable features of

these beetles are the gold-colored fringe on its legs and the edges of its body, the

protruding small horn on the beetle’s head, strong mandibles, and feathery antennae.

Step #1: Make observations.

What are three qualitative observations about your bess bug?

1. First, you will need to attach your harness (loop of string) to your bug.2. Next, you will take the remainder loop of string and hook it tightly onto a petri

dish.

14

Check off each step as you complete them

Name: ___________________________Period: _______3. Take the piece of carpet and measure out 5 cm. Find a way to mark the

beginning and end of the 5 cm. This will be how far your bug will have to travel.4. Next, place your bug at the beginning of the 5 cm on the carpet. Take all of your

weights and add them to the petri dish.5. Have your bug try and pull the weights for the 5 cm. Try to “assist” your bug so

it pulls the weights in as straight of a line as possible. If your bug is struggling to move remove some of the weights and try again!!!

6. Once your bug can BARELY pull the weight for 5 cm. Remove the weights from the paper clip and discover their mass on the electronic balance. RECORD THIS VALUE IN THE DATA TABLE.

7. To complete the data table you need to calculate the pulling power of your bug. To do so you should use the following formula:

Mass being pulled ---------------------- =

Mass of your bug

8. Once you have this number calculated, RECORD THIS VALUE IN YOUR DATA TABLE.

Step #5: Gather data during experiment.

Group Number Bug’s Mass Mass of Weights Pulled

Pulling Power of Bug

Step #6: Organize and analyze data.

Below make a LINE GRAPH comparing the Bug’s Mass (X axis) to the Mass of Weights Pulled (Y axis). We will make a best fit line as a class!!!

15

Name: ___________________________Period: _______Don’t forget to make a title, label the X and Y axis, and make a key if necessary.

Step #7: Make conclusions.

1. Describe what you did in the lab? (3 things)
