HSPT Preparation Classes
The High School Placement Test (HSPT) is required by all Catholic High Schools for entrance. Not only will preforming well on the HSPT look good to schools, the results will also determine the classes your student will take.
Fee: $100
Students enrolled in these classes will receive: (1) the most current HSPT prep book, (2) hours of instruction based on their needs and, (3) continuous feedback via practice tests.
Topics may include:
Math
Statistics: Review mean, median, mode, probability and data analysis via graphs and charts
Word Problems: decoding word problems, percent, decimal, fraction and algebra word problems
Number Sense: Review of prime factorization, multiples, divisibility rules, order of operations and signed number operations
Evaluating Expressions and Equations: performing operations with decimals, percentages, fractions and mixed numbers including rounding, scientific notation, estimation, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division , comparison, and conversions between each
Exponents and Roots: Review the application of the rules of exponents
Basic Geometry: Formulas for area, properties of plane figures, angle properties and Pythagorean Theorem
Coordinate Geometry: Graphing equations and inequalities and properties of the XY coordinate plane
Language Arts:
Test Mechanics: Following directions, test terms, pacing, answer elimination, scoring, prioritizing, and time management
Reading Comprehension: Question stems, text anticipation, context, inference, recapping, recalling, rewording, vocabulary-in-context, underlining, speculating, contradictions, and misplaced details
Vocabulary: Analogies, synonyms, antonyms, word-in-context and over 120 of the most common HSPT words
Paragraph Writing: Comparing sentence structure, linking and combining phrases, organizing and editing paragraphs
Verbal Logic: Conclusions, assumptions concept relationships and logic diagrams
Writing Mechanics: Locating errors in capitalization, spelling, and punctuation
Grammar: Adjectives, adverbs, comparisons, superlatives, subject-verb agreement, personal pronouns, relative pronouns, sentence fragments and run-ons
Important Dates Weekday class sessions: October 14th, 21st and 28th, November
4th and 18th , December 2nd, January 6th, 13th, 18th and 19th HSPT Testing date Saturday, January 21st
Meeting Times
Class will meek for 1 ½ hours on weekdays. Time will be split evenly between the two subjects.
