US 1 Mon 5/2/2011 Civil War unit– Day 5
In 1819 Missouri applied for statehood as a slave state, but Northerners responded to the bill with the Tallmadge Amendment which proposed that Missouri be admitted as a free state. As a result, Congress was unable to decide if & how to admit Missouri as a state.
DIRECTIONS: Based on what you learned last week (look at Thursday’s class notes), and on your brilliant creativity, write up a compromise to the dilemma above that will satisfy both Northerners & Southerners, and explain why you think it would satisfy both groups. (Keep in mind that both sides were concerned about maintaining the balance between free & slave states in Congress).
