The Purpose of the Church The book of Acts is a chronicle of the early church. From the accounts of Pentecost to the ministry of St. Stephen and the missionary journeys of Paul, Acts provides for today’s church a blueprint to follow. You cannot read too far into Acts without realizing that the purpose of the church is to evangelize the Gospel. There is one great truth about the church. That is that the church does not exist for our purposes, but rather for God’s purposes. So, we must always have our eyes cast outward into the world. It is a right and good thing to see our wonderful congregation here at Trinity as our family. But in reality, the whole world is our congregation. The fact is that God does not only show up every Sunday within the four walls of our sanctuary. God’s presence and grace extends to the “ends of the earth.” The church, then, must be a center for evangelism and ministry. It must be a place for us to come together in fellowship with one another. It is a place to nurture each other and to provide support and caring. But in the end, we are called to leave the church building and to engage in mission to the world around us. That call can be daunting. Fulfilling that purpose can be intimidating. That call can seem to be overwhelming at times. But the Good News of the Gospel is that when God calls, we are not alone and God will provide all we need to answer the call. Bishop Jonathan Holston once said: “We too often think of what we can’t do, instead of what we can do. When you think you don’t have enough, give it to God. You’ll do more than you ever thought you could do.” We must take those words to heart. We must rededicate ourselves to fulfilling the great calling of Christ’s holy church to evangelize Page | 1 Trinity Volume 7, Issue 8 August 2019

The Purpose of the Church

The book of Acts is a chronicle of the early church. God’s presence and grace extends to the “ends of the earth.”

The church, then, must be a center for evangelism and ministry. But the Good News of the Gospel is that when God calls,

we are not alone and God will provide all we need to answer the call. Bishop Jonathan Holston once said: “We too often think of what we can’t do, instead of what we can do. When you think you don’t have enough, give it to God. You’ll do more than you ever thought you could do.” We must take those words to heart. We must rededicate ourselves to fulfilling the great calling of Christ’s holy church to evangelize the Gospel to the world. Let us expand our vision beyond our sanctuary to the world around us. God is with us and he will provide all we need to succeed.

Yours in Christ,

Charles
