During WWII, Korea hadbeen conquered andoccupied by the Japanese.
When the Japanese were
defeated (1945), control ofKorea was split betweenU.S. (South) and Soviets(North) at 38th parallel.
In 1948: South became Republic of
Korea (Capitalist Democracy) North became Democratic
People’s Republic of Korea
