Welcome to our spring issue which we are celebrating by coming out with a completely new design and fresh look.As promised, we keep bringing you even more weddings with each issue because we know how much our read-ers love reading the romantic stories while getting inspiration for their own big day. We could barely keep up with the selection of beautiful weddings we had for publication in this issue, but we finally managed to narrow it down to the seven you see featured here. Our couples really outdid themselves when it came to their choice of spec-tacular venues, astonishing décor and those personal touches which are so im-portant to reflect their individuality and taste. Sometimes with the help of pro-fessional wedding planners and event

stylists, and sometimes completely on their own, today’s brides and grooms know how to plan their weddings down to the last meticulous detail, and the re-sults can certainly be seen in the photos. The one thing that all the couples agree on, however, is the importance of choos-ing just the right suppliers, all of them experts in their fields. The wedding in-dustry in Malta has grown considerably and here at WeddingDay we are happy to support those vendors who have made a name for themselves, no matter what their specialization is. When you choose just the right supplier who understands what you want, you can then rest assured that you are in the hands of professionals who will be reli-able and deliver exactly what you have asked for on the day. With your mind at rest, all that is left for you to do is re-lax, smile for the cameras and enjoy this day…one of the most important days in your life.

In this issue, we are also announcing the winner of the fabulous Facebook com-petition which we have brought you in collaboration with Weddingbells – one lucky bride has won a dress worth 1000 Euros! Join our FB page to keep yourself informed about more competitions we will be organizing throughout the year.

WeddingDay’s official make-up artist Daniela Cassar shares her trend secret for the 2014 wedding make-up season. “This year I had more brides asking for a smoky eye whereas last year it was the red lip. however I always have requests for the classic bridal fresh faced look. In fact the 2014 bridal look is all about effortlessly chic, ef-fervescent beauty. It is all about enhancing a bride’s best features so she looks and feels like the most gorgeous version of herself when she walks down the aisle. Eating healthy food, drinking a lot of water and taking care of the skin are important in order to achieve this natural glowing look. My biggest piece of advice I give to women is to not be afraid to experiment. The beauty of makeup is that it is not something permanent, so have fun with it and don’t be afraid to try different looks!”

Our fabulous Weddingbells & WeddingDay competition!

We believe that our readers deserve wonderful prizes so this year we teamed up with Wedding-bells to give one lucky bride the chance to win a gown worth 1000 Euros!Over the last few months, we asked readers on both our Facebook pages to choose the dress they liked the most from all our eight different front covers since Wedding Day started being published. In every issue, we like to show brides a different kind of gown as part of a theme and a specific “look”. Each dress is always unique, and repre-sents a different kind of bride, as can be seen here: from young and flirty, to classic and timeless, to Boho chic to simply and utterly romantic. We were overwhelmed with the response, and it was interesting to see how different women go for dif-ferent styles, reflecting their own personality and taste. We also asked you to tell us why you love the dress so much and from these answers we chose the best three, and here they are: cover 6Marilyn Sultana: “A clear depiction of how a ‘sim-ple’ dress turns out to be so stylish, classy and sweet at the same time!”

cover 8Annabel Cordina: “I love this dress because it is simple but its elegance is exceptional. This dress is a signature piece for a perfect fairytale wedding and turns a bride into a beautiful princess leaving everyone who looks at it speechless.”

cover 7Silvianne Buttigieg: “A perfect combination for a summer wedding... Greek goddess Venus like dress in light material and very comfortable fit, yet with a very fine bodice detail giving it a wow fac-tor!” Each of these ladies was then asked what they love about WD and what they would like to see in the magazine in the future. The winner with the best answer was:

Silvianne Buttigieg: “What I love about the mag-azine is the fact that through real weddings you manage to portray and promote the beauty of our islands in a most romantic and intimate way mak-ing it an ideal destination to choose as a place to tie the knot. Also the magazine is a mine of in-formation offering very useful details of various suppliers which really spares time… I also remain fascinated by the bride makeover part! What I would love to see in future issues would maybe be some more DIY projects for the crafty bride who has some spare time at her hands. I would also love to see a bride make over who has really natural curly hair or maybe some tips on how to create a wedding hair style on curly hair, which is one of my very big concerns! In my opinion what would also be very useful would be some form of WeddingDay Planner with all the necessary details, checklists etc. Maybe as an idea, issue the magazine in the form of a Plan-ner?”

Silvianne is getting married to her boyfriend Mar-vic Cini on 22 August 2015 and the wedding is taking place in Gozo.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Many brides dream of a fairytale wed-ding in an untouched natural setting which is transformed thanks to an expe-rienced stylist into a magical venue for their wedding reception. The Villa Bologna garden located just be-hind San Anton Gardens in Attard dates back to the 18th century and the mo-ment you step inside it is as if you have gone back in time. The baroque statues and gateway, the gentle tinkling foun-tain, the ponds and the majestic, sweep-ing staircase create a hushed, ethereal at-mosphere. When one has such a unique location which has so many interesting, intrinsic features, it is always best to not “over-dress” it.

Grand staircase

Elaine Zarb from Elegant Impressions and Jo-seph Baldacchino from Flower Arts worked with the weather-beaten limestone and the wil-lowy trees to create this romantic garden wed-ding theme.

Joseph painstakingly decorated the bannisters of the grand staircase with roses and mixed fo-liage which blended perfectly with the garden.Strings of crystals were hung from the iron structure to frame it softly, and white birdcages were filled with even more pastel blossoms in-cluding hydrangea and baby roses.

Our exotic-looking model Jana Grech by Mod-els M is actually an engineer by profession. She is also a bride-to-be herself. As we were pre-paring for this photo shoot, and just a few days after her dress fitting, her boyfriend proposed to her, much to her complete surprise.

soft look

Page 16: WEDDINGDAY ISSUE no. 9 - SPRING BLOSSOMS

For the bridal bouquet, Joseph used a mixture of English roses and baby roses in pale pink and white hues with a hint of blue to evoke the season of spring.

More and more brides these days are asking for cupcakes along with, and sometimes instead of, a large cake. These delicate swirly pink cupcakes shown on page 17 were made by Glorianne of Cuppycakes.

With a venue as large as Villa Bologna it is impor-tant to continue the same theme throughout the grounds and footpaths. The trees with their pink blossoms were used to full effect with the hang-ing of white heart-shaped decorations which drop delicately from among the branches and the green leaves. Yet more white wrought-iron birdcages were used in different locations throughout, to re-inforce the fairytale atmosphere. It is a mixture of soft pastel colours and different textures.

On this page, Jana shows how a shawl can be used in different ways for when the weather on a spring evening might still be a bit fresh. The sheer pink shawl can be used as a wrap which is tied in front, or simply allowed to rest loosely on your shoul-ders like a pashmina. The bride could even use it as her veil.

THE DRESS

For Jana’s slim, petite figure, Marquita from Weddingbells chose a light ivory-coloured ball bridal gown by Harvee Bridal designs. There is a tulle detail on the bodice and lace appliqués on the skirt with a tulle overlay. This gown is ideal for a young bride who has a romantic, fair-ytale type of wedding in mind.

The overall effect is effortlessly feminine and is perfect for someone who does not want a cumbersome dress. As can be seen, it’s not cut to the waist but is halfway between an empire line and the waistline which particularly suits petite brides. While there is a lot of fabric, it is light and floating, suitable for either a spring or summer wedding. The finish-ing touch is a separate, very delicate tulle caplet with appliqués which is fastened by a silver heart-shaped broach. It gives the illusion of butterfly sleeves and is perfect to wear over the dress during the wedding Mass.

MAKE-UP & HAIR

Make-up artist Daniela Cassar want-ed to create a soft effect which would best highlight Jana’s almond-shaped eyes and strong eyebrows. She en-hanced the shape by elongating the eyes with black eyeliner, and only needed to use thick mascara as Jana is lucky to have naturally long lashes.Pinks were used for the eyeshadow and lipstick to go with the romantic feel of the photo shoot, and to pick up the pink hues of the flowers. Daniela points out that sometimes people feel that pink will give them a sickly look, but by combining lilac pink and fuch-sia mousse eyeshadow, which is very long-lasting she came up with just the right shade. The colours create a per-fect contrast with the complexion of a pale-skinned brunette. Black eyeliner was applied in a retro 1960s style.A very neutral mineral foundation was used on Jana’s flawless skin and the shade of the blusher is peach.

Jo Briffa from Hairoscope created this signature look which enhances Jana’s delicate features. Her thick, shoulder length hair has been given extra volume with the addition of an extension. This is a contemporary style which evokes images of Audrey Hepburn while the curls at the back of the bun create a contrast between the slick front and the elaborate back. Since it is voluminous gown Joe felt the need to strike a balance between the hairstyle and the style of the dress. For a different kind of look, the hair can be swept back from the fore-head and a fake fringe can be used instead, which changes the hairstyle completely. The use of fresh flowers nestled near the side of the bun add the final fin-ishing touch to this look.White gold plated antique-inspired earrings complement the elegant swept up hair and the bare neckline.

thE cOUPLE It all started at a friend’s birthday party. Tiziana was 18 and Patrick was 21. At the time, neither of them was thinking of starting a relationship. “We both thought we were too young and still wanted to enjoy the single life. We started off as being “just friends” but that did not last for too long. It is not easy not knowing where you stand with the other person so we decided that what is meant to be will be! Having friends in common helped a lot and the key to our relationship is the trust in each other. During the years together we always talked about getting married some day and starting a family, but I never imagined that he was planning to surprise me with an engagement ring sev-en years into the relationship, just two days before Christmas.”

thE WEDDING Tiziana wanted a simple, elegant, timeless dress. “I knew it was “The Dress” because I felt good in it and it was comfortable and easy to move around in. All brides know that no matter how great you look, one of the most important things is to have a comfortable pair of shoes for the long hours spent on your feet during the wedding. Tiziana chose her lovely pair of bridal shoes from Darmanin Footwear which offers a wide range of styles for any bride to choose from.

Wanting to involve a lot of her family and friends in the wedding the bride chose her very close friends to be her bridesmaids; they all live in Mgarr and grew up together. “I could not chose between them and knew I wanted them all with me on our special day. They definitely were the best brides-maids any bride could wish for. They were all willing to help in the preparations and organised a bachelorette weekend I will

never forget! It all started off with an inti-mate Mass, just for the bridal party which meant a lot to me. They surprised me throughout the whole weekend and I got to spend time with a lot of family and friends. Same goes for Patrick, he got to spend time with his friends during his bachelor party which included a game of paintball.” She knew she did not want all the brides-maids in the same style of dress since not everybody feels comfortable in the same style and she found what she wanted thanks to a very personalized service from Marquita at Wedding Bells.

Apart from the indecisive weather condi-tions the bride felt very relaxed and on the wedding day she even helped in the hair preparations since she is a hairdresser who owns her own beauty salon in St Paul’s Bay. “Everybody made sure it was an enjoy-able experience, bridesmaids also brought sparkling wine and nibbles for everyone to

Page 34: WEDDINGDAY ISSUE no. 9 - SPRING BLOSSOMS

WD | 34

share. My bridesmaid Mateja, our make up artist, made sure to complete our look with her magic touch creating a lovely natural look for all the ladies.” Mateja, whose sa-lon is located in Mgarr, is well-known in the industry for having won best make-up artist at the Malta Fashion Awards. Apart from being qualified in wedding make-up, she is also the official make-up artist for the popular TV programme Ilsien in-Nisa and is always in great demand among TV pre-senters.

THE CEREMONY One thing the couple both agreed on was that they wanted to get married at the Mgarr Parish Church. Members of Tiziana and Patrick’s immedi-ate family were given the roles of best men and witnesses and godparents served as ushers. All the family was involved in the

Page 35: WEDDINGDAY ISSUE no. 9 - SPRING BLOSSOMS

WD | 35

planning of the wedding in one way or an-other and Tiziana says they would never have managed without their help.“The bridesmaids surprised us during Mass by singing a song as a choir. This made me very emotional because I never expected it.”

THE CELEBRATIONS Patrick has been working at the Golden Sands hotel since it opened so to the couple it feels like home and they both love the view and location. It was therefore a natural decision to have the reception in the elegant ballroom. Patrick is a chef by profession so all the prepara-tions involving the venue and catering were in his hands. “For the rest of the decisions our motto was “whatever makes the bride happy will do!”

Island Caterers have a wide range of venues on the island (four of which have been featured in this issue). They are renowned for their professional catering staff who are always smartly turned out, and who are always an asset to any wedding. The catering itself is al-ways delivered to perfection according to the requirements of the couple.

The theme for this wedding was Fam-ily Fiesta and the atmosphere was cre-ated by Luca’s five piece band provided by tunin’ Entertainment. “We wanted to have a great time while bringing two families together and being surrounded by a lot of our close friends”, the couple say.

BLODWEN SPITERI & RAMON VELLA

20th July 2013

photos by kRISTIAN

thE cOUPLE “We have known each other for over 10 years through common friends we had”, says Blodwen. “However, it was just a “hello and bye” kind of friendship. It seems that Ramon had a crush on me when we were 16/17 years old, but at that time I did not even know he existed. It was when Keith introduced me to Ramon that I realized what a good looking guy he was. having said that, it still took us 5-6 years for our first date and four years later we got married. I think it was a natural path as the more we got to know each other, the more our relationship was strengthened, and deep down we both knew that one day we would get married. The proposal made it official.”

When asked if the proposal was romantic, Blodwen says that for her it was, describ-ing it as completely “different” and that she would not have wanted it any other way. “Ramon gave me what I thought was the

usual birthday card. There I was reading what he had written in the card and at one point the card read, ‘Now, please stop read-ing and look at me.’ He started by saying how he felt about our relationship and at one point the ring come out. I immediately burst out crying and couldn’t stop. In fact at one point Ramon, looking slightly worried, asked me if I was actually crying tears of joy. I just didn’t expect it that he was going to propose. After all the crying was over, he then popped the question and I obviously said yes.”Here at WEDDINGDAY, we agree with Blodwen that it is probably one of the most romantic proposals we have ever heard!

thE WEDDING Blodwen bought her lovely dress from Pronovias and says the result was even better than what she was imagining “The Dress” to be. “I just told the sales assistants at Pronovias what I was after and they suggested a number of dresses;

Page 41: WEDDINGDAY ISSUE no. 9 - SPRING BLOSSOMS

wedding ceremony and had to go home. Before leaving she left a message with her parents saying, ‘Tell Blodwen and Ramon, I am really sorry I had to go and cannot help Blodwen with the dress.’ Pippa Azzopardi, the other flower girl was an obvious choice since up till the wedding day she was our only niece. Luke Bugeja, who is always up to mischief, was our page boy.”

Kevin, who was so instrumental in bring-ing the couple together, was one of the ush-

one of them was the one I finally chose. I often ask myself why I decided on this par-ticular gown, but I guess you just know it’s the one and I also couldn’t stop smiling. Since it was just the second bridal shop I had been to, I did have another appoint-ment booked two days later but ended up cancelling it as all I wanted was this dress.”

She had no difficulty choosing who her bridesmaids would be, because she knew right away that she wanted her cousin Cla-donia, who was her best friend throughout childhood, and two of her sisters-in-law Melanie and Sharon.“Riana Vella had been promised the role as my flower girl even before I had started go-ing out with Ramon. At my parents’ home she was constantly arranging my dress and making sure she was taking good care of me and telling me, ‘it’s your day so you should be treated just like a princess.’ We really felt sorry for her when she got sick during the

Page 42: WEDDINGDAY ISSUE no. 9 - SPRING BLOSSOMS

WD | 42

ers. “When we had just started going out together and Ramon met Kevin, the first thing he told me is ‘he looks like such a good guy. Should one day we decide to get married we should ask him to be our best man’. So when we actually decided to get married it became an obvious choice who our best man should be. He’s also very or-ganized and we had our minds completely at rest with him.”

Roderick Muscat, the hairdresser on the day, was also one of the ushers. “As cous-ins, Roderick and Ramon used to hang out a lot together during childhood. Roderick was also the one who used to give Ramon hints and advice on how he could impress me to win me over.” It was hard to chose the third usher from over 40 cousins from the bride’s side, but the choice finally fell on the youngest cousin, Shayne Agius. Blodwen’s exquisite make-up was done by venita, who managed to capture and en-hance the bride’s natural glow with subtle shades.

Page 43: WEDDINGDAY ISSUE no. 9 - SPRING BLOSSOMS

For their florist, the couple were very happy to have chosen Joseph Baldacchino from Flower Arts. Once they took the decision to use his services, they left everything very much in his professional hands. As always, he came up with the perfect arrangements to suit the unique venue, which was the Sa-luting Battery.

thE cEREMONY The historic church of St Catherine of Italy in Valletta was where they held their wedding ceremony. “I was a bit nervous on the day, but the nerves all vanished as soon as I started walking down the aisle. Ramon, on the other hand, was very nervous the week of our wedding, but completely relaxed and calmed down a day before. The only mishaps were, myself ar-riving 30 minutes late and one of our flower girls getting sick during the ceremony. We left really sorry for her as she was look-ing forward to the wedding as much as we were. Luckily Kris Micallef captured a lot of photos of her when she was still at my home.

People were a bit surprised when we went on foot from church to the venue. Howev-er, we thought it was the obvious thing to do since the venue was literally few steps away from the church.”

thE cELEBRAtIONS Blodwen says that they chose the Saluting Battery for its beau-tiful view and the ‘magical’ atmosphere it holds. Excellent catering was provided by Island caterers.“The cake was very plain however, at the top it had ‘our logo’ which was present also in the wedding invitations, Mass booklets, ice sculpture and so on.” They opted for a colour scheme which broke away from tradition. “We got mar-ried in July and we thought that a nice sum-mery colour would be ideal, so we chose a

bright yellow. “Perhaps the most original aspect of the wedding were the invitations and the sou-venirs which everyone seemed to like. The BR logo, created by Ramon Micallef, went down very well with people. The souvenirs consisted of a very small gift book with all our favourite quotes related to love and marriage.”

The couple say that everything ran very smoothly and they thoroughly really en-joyed their big day. “The proof is in the wedding photos taken by the fantastic Kris Micallef, you can see us with a smile on our face throughout the whole wedding. Eve-ryone involved in some way or another in our wedding made our day truly special for us. We really enjoyed our day and it was thanks to all those involved.”

thE cOUPLE “We met five years ago at our work place. We used to work in the same department within a Financial Management Company”, says Sarah. “We decided to get married because we im-mediately felt a connection; when the person is the right one, you just know right away. When two peo-ple fit perfectly, and you cannot imagine your future with anyone else, there is no need to spend years and years waiting to make the next step. Talking about marriage and spending our lives together was some-thing very natural for us.”

The romantic proposal came in Paris during a busi-ness trip which they had extended into a holiday. After a three hour queue to go up to the Eiffel tower, they finally arrived at the top, took some pictures and then Jacques very sweetly said “it’s so perfect up here, we just need one more thing to make it com-plete...” he took out the ring and said ‘will you marry me?’ Sarah was in tears by the time he popped the question and the answer was obviously a Yes.

thE WEDDING The first thing Sarah did was to start looking around for her dress. “All the wedding dresses were beautiful but none were really my style. I believe a wedding dress needs to be comfortable and reflect your character and style. You need to look good and feel special on your day and you can-not feel and look good in something that isn’t you, even if the dress is absolutely stunning. So I started researching dresses for ideas and roughly sketching

what I had in mind and what would have been my style. I was after something elegant but yet different and stylish. The material had to be the first decision, and fine and soft French lace was definitely the answer for sophistication and el-egance.” “After a number of pictures and ideas I decided on a low back, fitted dress, with Swarovski crys-tals defining the low cut at the back. The need for some bling bling in my wedding dress was a must. The dress maker was very responsive and understood immediately what I had in mind. Needless to say I was very nervous until I saw the dress ready and made sure it suited me, but once it was done I was very satisfied with all of it.”

Sarah’s bridesmaids were people who she knew would be in her life forever and who have left an important mark in her life. “Vanessa, my cousin, who is more like a sister to me as we grew up to-gether; we love each other and do things for each other just like sisters. Then there was Leanne, my best friend. True friends are rare, but you know you have found them because they are there for

you always, in the good and in the bad, whenever you need them at any time of the day, and they’ve always got your back. We have been friends for almost 15 years and I can say she is a true friend and always will be. “For her bridesmaids Sarah chose something plain and summery, in which they would be very com-fortable and which they both liked. “I gave them an idea of what I had in mind and they both sent me pictures of dresses they felt suited them.”Close family members and old friends were all somehow involved in the wedding. For his wit-ness, Jacques chose Henri, his brother, to whom he used to open his heart on a daily basis with updates on how his relationship with Sarah was evolving. “Poor guy!”, says Jacques with a laugh. Two close cousins were his best man and usher. “We all went to the same school, we were brought up together and I can trust them with my eyes closed. The other usher was my oldest friend whom I’ve known for over 20 years, so that was an automatic choice.”

Page 52: WEDDINGDAY ISSUE no. 9 - SPRING BLOSSOMS

Sarah says she was quite a relaxed bride and had a fun day with the bridesmaids which started at 8am. “I obviously had butterflies in my stomach, which kept increasing as the time got closer but it was a really memorable day and driving to church was one of the most emotional parts of the day. I was sitting be-side the person who has been a big inspiration to me in my life, my father, while driving to marry a very special person. Once I entered the church I was very happy and only slightly nervous.”

thE cEREMONY & cELEBRAtIONS Sarah and Jacques wanted a small, intimate wedding so they chose the small chapel at tal-Mirakli Lija for their ceremony. “We wanted to be very close to our loved ones in this special moment and we can say that we managed perfectly.”

The same criteria was used when it came to choosing the venue. As this was a summer wedding, they wanted somewhere close to the sea which was unique but not too large and overpowering, and for this reason their choice fell on the beautiful seaside location of the Bedouin Bar at Westin Dragonara Resort.“We based our catering on sophistication and quality of food. We wanted the food to be good yet different and elegant and we can say we were very satisfied by Westin’s food menu and quality.” When it came to the cake Sarah admits that it was pretty much her decision as Jacques was happy to leave it in my hands. “I wanted to go for something plain and elegant, but with a different and original touch. Seeing how much I love to include crystals in pretty much anything, my wedding cake was not going to

get away without a touch of crystals. I there-fore came up with the idea of covering the top tier of the cake with a number of crystal and pearl brooches. I had around 25 brooches in all and the pastry chef at Westin was extreme-ly helpful and patient placing them nicely on the top. He took a lot of interest in the cake and I was very happy with the final result.”The couple agree that they were both very determined to enjoy their wedding and pre-pared themselves from before that nothing and no one was going to ruin this special day. “In fact we can say we really enjoyed it. Once the ceremony was over we headed to the re-ception where we just let ourselves go as if it was our birthday party. By having a small and intimate wedding, we had time to chat, dance, drink and laugh with everyone and that is exactly what we wanted.”“Bernice Bugeja was our wedding planner and she made sure everything ran smoothly.”Small weddings can be a lot of fun, and Sarah and Jacques are pleased that they kept it that way. “We had a total of 240 guests with a fun band in a fresh summer venue. We could not have asked for anything more.”

thE cOUPLE Chris and Raisa met through a social network. After a few weeks they met in person when they went on their first date in Bugibba and that is how it all began.“Our relationship was very strong and we already had two children together but we felt something was missing, which was marriage. In March 2012 Chris proposed to me, in a very special way because he asked me to marry him in front of our children at home.”

thE WEDDING The couple’s children were very much involved in the wedding. They have a five-year old son named Zaya and a three-year-old daughter named Paris.“They were super excited for the wedding, especially Zaya who was old enough to understand the meaning of the day. Be-fore the big day before we went to sleep he told me ‘Mummy tomorrow is the wedding right? And you’re going to dress up like a

princess!’ I felt very proud to see my kids at our wedding especially when we were walking all three of us down the aisle with my mother and father.”

Raisa bought her wedding gown from Weddingbells. She was looking for a white ball gown dress and took her mother and best friend with her for their advice. “I only tried on two dresses and with the second one immediately felt that it was the perfect princess dress for me.” The full veil and high tiara gave Raisa the bridal look she had always dreamt about.

She chose her three cousins to be her bridesmaids while her best friend was the maid of honour. Raisa wanted each of their dresses to be different and special so she had them especially made by professional dressmaker Joe Parnis from his ‘n hers in Mosta. He came up with unique styles all in a beautiful shade of fuchsia. He also

made the dresses for the flower girls and several other members of the family. Entrusting the dresses of your bridal party to a dressmaker ensures that you get be-spoke designs, making your wedding more original than ever.

Raisa wishes that she had been a bit more laid-back. “On the day of the wedding at 8am I was at the venue putting some last finishing touches to everything. I ad-mit it was a bit crazy! Instead of being the kind of bride who was getting ready calmly at home, enjoying her day, there I was at the venue stressing out over details.” thE cEREMONY The couple changed all the chairs in the Church and made them all white “it looked like heaven” says Raisa. “The most important thing for me was to walk down the aisle with both my father and mother, and not just my father.” The young ushers were Raisa’s two nephews Alec and Adam. They were thrilled to be part of the wedding and very proudly held up chalk signs written by Raias’s mother announcing the arrival of the bride and then another sign to an-nounce that the couple were “Just married”.

thE cELEBRAtIONS Chris was very much involved in the choice of venue because their dream was to have a white wedding under a big tent. The theme this couple went for was ultra modern. “We had a human table to serve welcome drinks to our guests, we had fireworks and a lovely ice sculpture with our logo. All the napkins had our logo on them as well, and after

Page 61: WEDDINGDAY ISSUE no. 9 - SPRING BLOSSOMS

midnight we provided flip flops for our guests so that they could dance the night away with us.”

The grand 7-tier cake was made of three different colours: white, pink and black with a touch of silver. There were a lot of ‘fun’ touches including a candy bar which provided colour as well as jellybeans and candy. Picking up the colour scheme from the bridesmaids’ dresses were the hot pink flowers which provided splashes of brightness against the dazzling white. Raisa looks back at her wedding day and describes it as incredibly emotional. “It was a memorable day for us both at the church and the reception. There are no words to describe the feeling. I had a small surprise for the groom as well because as a special guest I had brought Ivan from Winter Moods. Chris was so sur-prised!”

Raisa feels she needs to thank her loving parents who helped them so much through their journey. “I espe-cially want to thank my mother as she designed the venue. She really knew what she wanted to do imme-diately; she used to tell me ‘the things I didn’t do in our wedding day I’m doing them for your wedding.”.

thE cOUPLE Chloe and Karl have one of those relationships which started off as friendship. “karl and I were very close friends for approximately eight years and after getting out of previous relationships, we began to spend more and more time together as singles and great friends. Over the space of a few months, things just progressed and fell into place.”

She says that the proposal was very romantic and a lot of carefully planned details went into it without her knowledge.“For a couple of months, prior to the proposal, karl was having my ring designed and custom made. Once they showed him the final product, he still didn’t think it was exactly as I would have wanted, so they made further changes. This was all done with the help of both my mother and his, in order to se-cretly get my ring size. He had been travelling for work quite a bit around that time, so one day he announced that he would be needing to travel to Rome for work in a few weeks and that he would have some free time while he was there, so it would be nice for me to join him. I

Page 65: WEDDINGDAY ISSUE no. 9 - SPRING BLOSSOMS

didn’t think anything unusual of it, so I agreed and looked forward to it. On our first night in Rome, he took me to a wonderful quiet little restaurant, recommended by relatives living in Rome. After a lovely meal, he suggested we go for some champagne on top of Pjazza di Spagna. Once we reached the top of the Span-ish steps, we reached a quiet champagne bar, where he ordered our drinks and got us a ta-ble alone outside. He then pulled the ring out of his jacket pocket and popped the question. It was without doubt one of the happiest mo-ments of my life. We then celebrated with a few more drinks!”

thE WEDDING When it came to her dress, Chloe was looking for something chic, simple and timeless. She wanted a fitted elegant mer-maid gown with a long train and long veil to match and she found what she wanted at Pro-novias.“I selected a few dresses to try on. My dress was the fourth one I put on and I fell in love with it instantly, as did my family who joined me for

the occasion. Once I put that dress on, I didn’t even bother trying on the rest.”

Chloe decided to have her immediate fam-ily, which included her sisters and cousins, as bridesmaids. “I wanted the girls to feel young and glamorous and true to their personalities. So they had a lot of input. We finally decided on a soft pink Grecian-style dress with a crys-tal embellishment.”

Karl has a close group of about seven old friends and was really giving it a lot of thought as to whom he would chose for his best man. However, whenever he had one too many drinks on a night out, he would ask them all to be best man. So, when the time came, we were stuck with seven best men! They all turned out to be great and really helped out to ensure eve-rything went smoothly on the big day.” The ushers were cousins from both the UK and Malta.

Page 67: WEDDINGDAY ISSUE no. 9 - SPRING BLOSSOMS

thE cEREMONY The ceremony was held at Gharghur Parish Church and Chloe’s de-scribes her feeling that day as being “surpris-ingly relaxed yet excited”. After the Mass, the couple and the bridal party were whisked away to their venue in elegant wedding cars hired from Meli car Rentals, known for their excel-lent service.

thE cELEBRAtIONS Chloe and Karl opted for a classic yet romantic theme. The venue was filled with candles, fairy lights and a lot of fresh flowers created by the talented Joseph Baldacchino from Flower Arts added the final touches to the overlook look. “We chose to have our reception in the pjazza at Monte Kristo Estates. The pjazza has a Ro-man feel to it and reminded us of where we had got engaged. The grand entrance was beautiful and since there were no surrounding neigh-bours, noise wasn’t an issue. Our guests mainly consisted of a young crowd so we didn’t want the reception to finish early.”

Since Chloe’s father is a chef, the cater-ing was of utmost importance, and they were rest assured that they were in the best of hands because of Island cater-ers. “We had a large selection of cana-pes going around throughout the night. We also had a live BBQ, where the chefs cooked your meat or fish by order. We had a pasta and salad station, a choco-late fountain and fresh fruit table and also a cocktail bar, as well as a wine and spirit bar.”

The cake was a simple four-tiered cake

but the surprise for the guests was that there was a different flavour in every tier: traditional fruit & almond, vanilla, baci and red velvet. The cake was then adorned with fresh flowers and looked absolutely beautiful.

Looking back on their special day Chloe and Karl agree that it was a day filled with laughter, smiles and most of all, love. “If I could go back and do it all again, I would do so in a heartbeat.”

thE cOUPLE We first met in Comino during an evening boat trip and BBQ event. We were introduced by a mutual friend and soon we fell in love. Sometime later we were invited back to Comino for another evening event and Ian decided to propose to me. It was a very romantic moment and I accepted. We were right for each other and it seemed the most natural thing in the world to get married and commit the rest of our lives to each other.

thE WEDDING “Malta was the obvious choice for our wedding as we both live here and love the island. I have lived in Malta for 18 years and my partner has been here for 6 years. We both enjoyed the experience of planning the wedding and our attention to detail on the day of our wedding paid off. Our relatives came over from England, Scotland, Germany, hong kong and Czech Republic. The rest were our friends from Malta. We decided to have a wedding for

family and our close friends only. Unfortu-nately, some of our family members from France and South Africa could not attend.”

As this was going to be her second wed-ding, Lydia at first thought it would be inappropriate to wear white. She was looking for something classy and stylish and finally found just what she wanted at Pronovias.“However, the dresses I tried on didn’t look right on me in colour and I was not comfortable. I then realised, “This is going to be my big day so why shouldn’t I wear white?!” It was the right choice, the dress was beautiful as can be seen from the photographs.” Touches of lace gave the dress the classic look Lydia was looking for, and was exactly right for a second wedding.

She decided not to have bridesmaids as the wedding was going to be small and inti-mate with 20 guests, so she only had a maid of honour whose dress matched the colour

scheme. The combined cultures of the bride and groom meant that this would be a Scottish and Slovakian wedding, complete with a full kilt for the groom. “Our inspiration for the theme came from our cultural heritage and we wanted to combine the two on the day, particularly for our family and friends.

thE cEREMONY Iain and Lydia read out standard wedding vows to each other but it was made more special when Ian’s daugh-ter read a Scottish wedding poem for them. Everything ran quite smoothly thanks to the great organization, except for one slight mishap. “My entry into the wedding cer-emony was a bit confusing. The music for me to enter was not loud enough for me to hear it, so I entered much later plus no one warned our guests that I had arrived, so they looked pretty surprised,” says Lydia recalling that moment with a smile.

The ceremony started at 11am, followed by a lovely toast to the bride and groom - whereby they smashed their glasses and the groom had to sweep up to prove he is trained for marriage. Then they had the cutting of the cake. Unusually, this took place before lunch as they had a different course of events planned. The beautiful white three-tier baci and al-mond cake contained Lydia’s favourite ingredients and was topped with white icing hearts.

thE cELEBRAtIONS The couple knew about the Castello venue from different events they had attended there and they loved the place. “The location is quiet, set in beautiful Maltese countryside. It has the benefit of indoor and outdoor space. When we decided to get married it was the first and obvious choice for us.” Flower arrangements in pink and

tangerine made by Alistair Fenech added to the magic of the late summer weather. The couple switched things round by having a bagpiper entertaining guests playing traditional Scottish music be-fore they had a seated lunch in the beau-tiful outdoor grounds, featuring a care-fully selected menu.

“We organized games throughout the day and my son, who is a professional R&B singer, performed two songs for us. The DJ played 80’s music and everyone was dancing and had a great time. We really enjoyed the weather, blue sky and the outdoor area. Everything looked so beautiful in the day light. The wedding was over around 6pm and we were so happy we did it this way although the day passed too quickly!”

CARMELINA BORG & DAVID CAChIA

8th June 2013

thE cOUPLE Carmelina and David used to see each other where he used to work in Paceville. However the official introduction was done by his friends at another club in Paceville one evening when he had the night off.   In a twist to the usual tradition, it was Carmelina who proposed to David. “From the start we had agreed that when the right time came, I would be the one to propose,” she says.

She rented a part of the beach at Golden Sands where she had a sweet heart table set up and a waiter all to themselves who served them the most romantic dinner ever that evening.  “When we got to the

dessert, I made sure to organise our fa-vourite song to be played in the back ground and I gave him a watch as my engagement gift to him. Suddenly, hav-ing planned all to perfection, fireworks went up with the words -’will you marry me?’, and thanks to my brother who was videotaping it all, we have these happy memories all on film.”

thE WEDDING Carmelina chose to have her wedding dress hand-made by her seamstress Doris Abela. “I wanted something original which would really reflect who I am. The dress was inspired by a Gucci dress worn by Hillary Swank for the 2011 Oscars.”Although she had her mind set on

what kind of dresses she wanted for her bridesmaids, she was open to advice as she wanted them to feel involved in the whole process. These dresses were also made by the dressmaker.

On the whole, the bride says she was very relaxed on the day as she was sur-rounded by professional people, and es-pecially as she had everything taken care of by Sarah Young, her wedding planner. For her make-up, Carmelina enlisted the services of Schevon camilleri whose experience in wedding make-up en-sured that the bride looked perfect.

thE cEREMONY The couple were married at Our Lady of Atochia, also known as Madonna ta’ Samra, in Ham-run. The minute guests walked into the church, they were met with an incred-ible display of white roses nestled in green foliage which adorned the pews, accompanied by tulle fabric down the whole length of the aisle right up to the altar. White candles in candelabras con-tributed to the dazzling effect while an-other beautiful arrangement hung from the high-vaulted ceiling. Bjorn Borg from Floreal, Carmelina’s brother, truly

outdid himself with the way he decorated the entire church and it must have taken hours of painstaking work and attention to detail to create this effect. The page boy proudly holding the rings ac-companied by the flower girl who was also dressed in white, looked adorable as they walked ahead of the bride. Carmelina defi-nitely felt like all her dreams of a white wed-ding had come true as she walked down the aisle on her father’s arm, to marry David. During the ceremony, the church was filled with the music of the talented Soli Deo Glo-ria choir.

thE cELEBRAtIONS This was a very lav-ish wedding for which the couple chose one of Malta’s most historic, grandiose outdoor venues. “I choose villa Bologna as I wanted a garden wedding and in my opinion it’s the top garden venue for weddings on the island at present.”“The food quality, items and service was very important for us and our families and Island caterers came up with a lovely menu. We

all went for a lovely food tasting and could amend and change slightly whatever we wanted before the big day.  We even had piz-za slices for the after party, which went down very well with our guests.”For her cake, Carmelina ordered edible pearls from abroad which were stuck onto the icing fondant one by one by the pastry chef to match the design she wanted. “Hours of work were involved but the result was the image I always had in mind.”

The theme of the reception was white feath-ers, pearls and crystals and in creating the set-up Carmelina was lucky to have the in-valuable help of her brother, who has been a well-known name in the wedding indus-try for the last 15 years. “he had a big say in helping me with my theme. I had to incor-porate the styles of both a morning and an evening wedding in one since the Mass was at noon and our after hours party ended at 11pm. Bjorn also set up a candy table which was a big highlight.”

The best way to describe this wedding would be in just one word: “fun”, but there was one moment in particular which Carmelina will always remember. “I really enjoyed dancing on the beautiful dance floor with my hus-band and daughter while Ira Losco sang Katy Perry’s ‘Fireworks’ as real fireworks illumi-nated the sky.”

Other DJs and musicians contributed to the entertainment as everyone danced the night away on that balmy summer evening.“I must say that everything went well and the day was and will always remain super special for us, especially having all our family and friends celebrate this brilliant day with us making us the happiest people ever.”

The couple decided to dispense with souve-nirs and instead gave a donation to the char-ity Puttinu cares.
