Airlie is a full-service destination that provides the perfect spot to celebrate your entire weddingweekend from rehearsal dinner through farewell brunch. Looking to plan activities for your wedding party, family, or guests? Schedule a sporting clay session or shoot archery with our range masters. Gather around the fire pit after a delicious farm-to-table meal at Harry’s, our onsite lakeside restaurant.

Speaking of farm-to-table, our catering menus are built around fresh ingredients sourced from Airlie Berkshire Farm or through our network of local purveyors. Thinking of incorporating a signature cocktail? Ask about our garden-to-glass concept which utilizes herbs from our Organic Garden.

We are unique in so many ways. A Historic Hotel of America, Airlie House was built in 1899. Its adjoining formal gardens planted shortly thereafter — and still stand today — beautiful as ever (and sit top of the photography list for most couples). As previously mentioned, our grounds span 300 acres, and exude charm. Meandering pathways over bridges and around lakes, a Butterfly Garden, wildlife, and trees are all part of our charming village-like setting. Our sustainability roots run deep and evolve each year, after all, Airlie was where the concept for Earth Day was born. Once you drive through our entrance and feel the history of these acres, you can’t help but fall in love.

Most importantly, we have to tell you about our team. What truly makes the difference is their experience, and what keeps them returning is our dedicated team of professionals. We know Virginian hospitality, and we can’t wait for you to experience it for yourself, here at Airlie.

HistoryOur story begins with Harry Connelly Groome, a wealthy Phil-adelphia native who purchased this land in 1899 to build his “Airlie House,” named after a castle in Scotland. The stunning three-story grand Georgian Revival structure with its formal gar-dens was featured not long after in House and Garden Maga-zine. Airlie House and Farm was operated as a modern gen-tleman’s estate, boasting pastures with purebred livestock in addition to the property’s extensive gardens.

In 1961, Airlie House and Farm became Airlie Center and began making history almost immediately with Life Magazine declaring it an “Island of Thought.” The Center’s conference facilities were like none other in the nation — attracting changemakers in the fields of education, public health, environ-mental research and social progress.

Thought became action as numerous local and national civil rights activists, including Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., met at Airlie to fight segregation and inequality. In 1988, over 150 gay and lesbian leaders assembled for The War Conference to advance hu-man rights. Over this same period, the Airlie Productions film company was founded and produced over 250 documentaries to promote positive change in the world.

Our rich past lives very much in the present here. With historic charm and gracious Virginian hospitality going hand-in-hand with the luxury and convenience of a modern resort. We’re proud to be recognized as one of the Historic Hotels of America, a pro-gram of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Even as we continue to build on our proud agricultural heritage with our production farm and uphold our legacy of progress and innovation, we are also looking forward.
