Recent advances in cataract surgeryWhat is cataract?

· Cataract is an opacification of naturally transparent lens of the eye. During the initial stages of cataract, patient may notice only a slight cloudiness, as the cataract grows, it blocks more light and vision further detoriates

milk and immediately mix it into the above coconut cream milk. Turn off the gas and allow the mix to cool down.

• Add the vanilla/coconut essence to the cooled down mix. Next grease the square moulds, and put the milk mixture till about 3/4th in each mould and allow to cool.

• Next take a heavy bottomed pan, heat the butter, and add the chocolate powder, icing sugar and chocolate essence. If required, mix with a little milk so that the mixture becomes a little semi-solid.

• Turn off the gas, fill the moulds with the above semi-solid cream like mixture, and decorate/sprinkle with the grated dairy milk chocolate.

• Allow the moulds to cool in the fridge for half hour. Take out, wait for 5 mins and de-mould.

• Chocolate powder – 2 tb sp

• Butter – ½ tb sp

• Icing sugar – ½ tb sp

• Chocolate essence – 2 drops

• Dairy milk chocolate bar – ½ grated

• Milk – 1 cup

• Gelatin – 2 sp

• Coconut cream – 1 tb sp

• Ordinary sugar – 1 tb sp

• Vanilla or coconut essence – 2 drops

• Square moulds

Method

• For the coco jelly – take a heavybottomed non stick pan. Add milk along with ordinary sugar. When the milk comes to a boil, reduce flame and add coconut cream. Stir lightly.

T G Kere (Thimmegowdarakere) a quaint, idyllic spot with a beautiful lake on the outskirts of Bangalore is where B V Prakash, an accomplished travel writer and mountaineer takes us this weekend…

Though the city of Bangalore once had many large tanks all over the city the effects of modernization has wiped out many of them while some of those existing water bodies are constantly being polluted!

Fortunately, the outskirts of the city, especially rural areas still have a few un-spoilt lakes and tanks set in scenic surroundings. Driving towards Kanakapura one passes through Harohalli, a busy town on the way. But close to this buzzing township are a couple of village tanks in quiet locales.

If you have been to Medamaranahallikere written about earlier, it would not be difficult to trace yet another tank nearby. This is an unnamed tank near the village of Medamaranahalli. Though this lake does not have a specific name as such, it is often called Thimmegowdarakere after an important person in the village!

Though there is absolutely nothing extra ordinary about this place…the atmosphere is serene, devoid of crowds and noise which makes it suitable to spend some time with nature. The lake itself is in a private land but there is no restriction to visit it and spend a day here as long as no disturbance is caused to local people. The beauty of the place is enhanced by a line of trees on one side of the bund with the water body on the other. It is surrounded by large tracts of green fields on the left as well as beyond the lake on the right. A lone tree with protruding leafless branches on the edge of the lake gives it an artistic view. On the way to the lake is huge anthill.

Being in calm and green locale with hardly any humans around, this lake is a haven for a variety of birds. If you are a birdwatcher you should not forget to take a pair of binoculars and a notebook to list the birds you may see!

Among the water birds cormorants and coots (with a white strip on the foreheads) are easily spotted swimming and diving for fish in the water. Kingfishers and Green bee-eaters can also be seen quite often. The best way to enjoy the place is to take walk along the bund to the western end. As there is no other activity, than lazing around this place would be worth the visit if the quietness and pleasing vistas are what you need!

Getting there: Drive on Kanakapura Road from the city for 40 kms to reach Harohalli. Here take the right turn and go for 3.5 kms to Medamaranahalli Cross. Drive further for a km and you will see an abandoned gate of sugar factory on right. Here the lake is on the left and you will have to walk towards it on the narrow trail. Food and water is to be taken along. Please keep the place clean!
