Dr. Sudha Krishnamurthy, MD (Ob & Gyn) of Rithani Clinic, Jai Bharath Nagar outlines the need for WOMEN to know about PCOS and highlights various measures to control this common syndrome…

PCOS - Why and what should I know?

Dr. Sudha Krishnamurthy, MD (Ob & Gyn)Ph: 88610 29865

Why should a woman know more about her diagnosis of PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) ?

It's not just because it occurs so commonly but because women can manage their symptoms by healthy lifestyle. More than medical intervention, lifestyle changes has a greater impact! Also many being diagnosed during adolescence and early twenties, knowing

about PCOS and adapting healthy lifestyle will definitely reduce long term complications.

What are polycystic ovaries?

Polycystic ovaries are slightly larger than normal ovaries and have twice the number of follicles (small cysts). Polycystic ovaries are very common affecting 20% of women. Having polycystic ovaries does not mean, you have polycystic ovary syndrome. Around 6–7% of women with polycystic ovaries have PCOS.

What are the symptoms?

Irregular periods or no periods at all / Difficulty becoming pregnant (reduced fertility) / More facial or body hair than usual (hirsutism) / Loss of hair on your head / Overweight, rapid increase in weight, difficulty losing weight / Oily skin, acne / Depression and mood swings

The symptoms may vary from woman to woman. Some may have mild symptoms, while others are affected severely.

What causes PCOS?

The cause of PCOS is not yet known. It sometimes runs in families. If any of your relatives (mother, aunts and sisters) are affected, your own risk of developing this syndrome is increased. The symptoms are related to abnormal hormone levels. Testosterone is a hormone which is produced by the ovaries. Women with PCOS have slightly higher than normal levels of testosterone and this is associated with many of the symptoms of this condition.

How is it diagnosed?

Irregular, infrequent periods or no periods / More facial or body hair than usual and / or blood tests which show higher / Testosterone levels than normal / An ultrasound scan which shows polycystic ovaries

What could PCOS mean for your long-term health?

You are at greater risk of developing the following long-term health problems if you have PCOS like Insulin resistance and Diabetes. 10–20% women with PCOS go on to develop diabetes at some time. Also, these women tend to have high blood pressure. Heart diseases and for women with less than three periods a year, it may lead to endometrial cancer are other effects of PCOS.

How to reduce long-term health risks?

Eat a healthy balanced diet that includes fruits, vegetables and whole foods / Decreased intake of sugar, salt and caffeine / Exercise regularly (30 minutes at least three times a week) / Aim to keep your normal (BMI between 19 and 25) / Have regular health checks

Is there a cure?

There is no cure for PCOS. Medical treatments aim to manage and reduce the symptoms or consequences of having it. Medication alone is not the answer. Many women with PCOS successfully manage their symptoms and long-term health risks without medical intervention also. They do this by eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Koorangere, a scenic outpost along the Bangalore-Mysore highway close to Channapatna is where B V Prakash, an accomplished travel writer and mountaineer takes us this weekend…

At about 70 kms from the city, a little away from the Mysore road is a small hill to the left. Unless one looks for this can easily be missed. As the hill is not visible clearly the only landmark to remember is the welcome arch of the temple of Yoga Narasimhaswamy for which the hill is known for. As such it is popularly called Yoga Narasimhaswamy Betta. The hill is also called Koorangere Betta.

As you drive towards for about 68 kms on the left is the arch which leads to the hill. Koorangere Betta is a fairly high hill covered with a sparse jungle and profusely grown thorny bushes. Thanks to the efforts of the authorities concerned there is a well laid out road right up to the top, enabling all kinds of vehicles to reach there.

Initially though there are stretches of bad mud roads to be overcome. At the base of the hill, a small board points to the direction to be taken. The drive up the hill is quite interesting with calls of birds and without the noise of the highway. In fact, the hill should be a paradise for birdwatchers as there numerous species flitting across the bushes. The dry forest is also a haven for smaller animals like the hare, mongoose, wild boars and peacocks. Sighting them is only a matter of chance!

As the road circumvents the hill

from east and south, panoramic views of the countryside open up. One can stop wherever required and enjoy the view. As you near the top, a few structures are seen. To the left is a temple of Hanuman, a recent construction. An old building which seems to the old temple is also nearby. Adjacent to it is a Kalyan Mantapa for the use of local villagers and visitors alike. On the right is an elevated ground with the shade of a few trees and is a good place to relax. Next to this spot is an old pond with steps.

To reach the top you have to drive further for a km or so. The main shrine is also well renovated. Going around the temple you can view the fields and farms below. But the best views especially at the sunset are from a rock to the west of the temple. The whole place is serene and peaceful!

Getting there: Driving on Mysore road t owards Myso re go pas t Channapatna. As you see Shivalli restaurant on right look for the arch on left and follow the road until a small board is seen and follow the direction. Food and water may be carried. Please ensure the place is not littered.
