Please join me in welcoming the physicians and staff from urology and oncology to the UnityPoint Health team. The transition of these services from Cedar Valley Medical Specialists, PC to UnityPoint Health – Waterloo was com- pleted this week. UnityPoint Health Waterloo – Center for Urology and UnityPoint Health Waterloo – Community Cancer Center will continue serving patients at their current locations. Employees of the two clinics are now part of UnityPoint Health – Waterloo and patients will see little change as a result of this shift. The urology practice is located at 2413 W Ridgeway Ave. in Waterloo. Eric Askeland, MD; Daniel Lee, MD; Mark Newton, MD; Holly Gaede, ARNP and Michelle Nepple, PA-C are a highly-regarded group of urologists in our area. The new Community Cancer Center is located at 3530 W 4th St. near Unit- ed Medical Park in Waterloo. Anusha Reddy Madadi, MD and Julie Gleason, ARNP are now seeing patients while Wael Ghalayini, MD will join the practice next month. This transition will position our organization for anticipated changes in healthcare as well as achieve the ultimate goal of offering the best possible care for each patient. We are proud to offer these services to our community and happy to have new associates joining us! Q: I am in a bargaining department and have not once been contacted by our union representative. Is there a reason we are not sent newsletters or updates as to how they are actually helping us? I am disappointed they don’t seem to make themselves known and available.

A: We certainly cannot speak on behalf of the union. You may want to contact a local union steward to answer your ques-tion.Steve Sesterhenn, HR

Q: Why is there not a link on the Uni-tyPoint Health – Waterloo website to find policies and procedures? There is a link to a patient handbook, but not employee handbook.

A: The policies and procedures are available via a link on the Intranet homep-age (in the right column under ‘UnityPoint Health Balanced Scorecard’ icon). The Allen website is meant to house informa-tion for our patients and the public. The Intranet stores documents needed by our staff and providers.Angie Fuller, Marketing & Communications

Q: I noticed in Lawson, when I checked my PTO balance, it wasn’t as high as I was expecting. Before Lawson, I was always able to calculate my PTO from check to check, and it always matched. When I called AskHR, they told me that the bal-ance is behind what I actually have. Could you clarify why the balance isn’t up-to-date, and where the best place is to check for an accurate PTO balance?

A: Thanks for the question. Full detail on the per pay period calculation and day by day use of PTO are captured in the “PTO Balances” section of Lawson. Addi-tional information on how to use this page can be found in the Lawson Resources Tip Sheet section. AskHR can assist staff who believe there are any errors in the accrual of PTO or total balance. In the event that you did not get the answer you were look-ing for, please feel free to share your name and case number with your local HR team and additional follow-up can be done.Steve Sesterhenn, HR

HealthPartners UnityPoint Health: UnityPoint Health’s New Insurance Company

In January 2016, UnityPoint Health partnered with Minnesota-based HealthPartners to create a new insurance company. This opportunity al-lows community members and their families to live healthier lives as their access to high quality, affordable care increases. This high value option brings the insurer and health care provider closer together, resulting in a greater opportunity for us to help coordinate health care more efficiently for our patients.

Pending regulatory approval, HealthPartners UnityPoint Health will begin selling Medi-care Advantage health insurance plans to the general public in 30 counties in Iowa and Illinois starting October 15, 2016. Why is this important to you as associates? “Providing the Medicare Advantage option for individuals provides more value, and creates a great opportunity to coordinate care more resourcefully, explains Jan Hahn, Vice President of employer and payor strategies. “As one of our community’s trusted leaders in health-care, we have partnered with a proven leader in health insurance coverage to provide comprehensive plans centered on keeping each individual healthy.” A Medicare Advantage awareness campaign, that includes advertising, will launch in early August. The campaign will appear in the markets where HealthPartners UnityPoint Health Medicare Advantage plans will be sold. More details on the Medicare Advantage plans will be shared in future updates. If you have questions, please contact your leader or visit the FAQ’s on this venture located on the intranet.

Cookie Cart Naming ContestJust as Grandma’s cookie jar was always full of very good things, Allen Hospital hopes to recapture our love for all things truly human by providing something as simple as a freshly-baked cookie to employees and visitors. It’s hard to top the aroma and taste of cookies, especially when they are given as a gift of compassion and gratitude.

The cookie cart will be making its rounds a couple of times a week. It will target waiting rooms and public areas and employees may find surprise visits to departments whose outcomes have shown amazing improvement through best practice.

We need YOUR help in naming the new Allen Cookie Cart! The cookie cart has been made possible through a generous $4,054.72 IMPACT Grant from the Allen Foundation and hopes to be in production by early fall. The department that offers the winning name for the cookie cart will receive the very first visit from the cart and its offerings. Submit your cookie cart name to [email protected] by August 19.

Allen Hospital is proud to be part of the MAPLES Neighborhood and was happy to par-ticipate in Tuesday’s National Night Out. Blue Crew vol-unteers hosted a bike rodeo, bike helmet giveaway, car seat safety checks and served walking tacos inside St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.

Last September, the Allen Foundation—led by the Allen Associates—kicked off the For Al-len For You Capital Campaign. The campaign includes three important projects:

• Construction of Prairie Parkway in Cedar Falls• Allen College initiatives for facility enhancements, expan-

sion and scholarships• Renovation of the Birthing Center/NICU and Pediatrics Unit

We are excited to announce that we have raised over $10 million of the $19.8 million campaign goal! This important milestone is thanks to you, the associates, who have supported the For Allen For You campaign with financial contributions. In fact, nearly 90 percent of associates have given or pledged since that kick off in September.

By reaching the halfway point, it’s time to publically announce the campaign. As an associate in the UnityPoint Health – Wa-terloo region, you are invited to the celebration on September 19 at 5 p.m. at Prairie Parkway. More information to follow.

Before the celebration, we are calling on the Allen team one last time because, at the kick-off, we want to have a special presentation by the associates to announce 100 percent partic-ipation. Just 16 departments are left in the quest to reach 100 percent giving with many who are only one or two associates short:

• Ambulatory Surgery UMP • Behavior Health• Café• Clinical Dietetics• CT• ED• Environmental Services• Infusion Center• IP Pharmacy• Laundry• MRI—Hospital • OB• Pain Clinic• Radiology—UMP & Peoples Clinic• Sterile Processing• Ultrasound

If you haven’t given, please consider joining your peers and being a part of this transformational opportunity. Your gift will be an investment in our patients, students and the Cedar Valley community as a whole – including you and your family!

Thank you all for your role in supporting this campaign. Togeth-er, we will reach our goal and make a tremendous impact on the healthcare and healthcare education of those communities we serve. To learn more about the For Allen For You Capital Campaign, please contact the Foundation at ext. 3960. You may also choose to pledge now.

Rotary Shoebox Project – Why We HelpThis project began with a trip to Nicaragua and seeing how the families lived. Children spent their time, not in schools, but scavenging dump sites for anything they could sell to have enough food to eat.

That 2002 trip with nine others from the Cedar Valley showed us the impact $30 worth of gifts can make to kids from families in extreme poverty. Today we are supported by more than a dozen area groups, including Allen College and Allen Hospital and another dozen or so from eight other states. These shoe-boxes aren’t only a small gift to the children – they also serve as extra incentive to stay in school. Now that the project is 14 years old, we are now hearing reports of many children who have high school and even college degrees, who probably would not have stayed in school without the promise of the shoeboxes.

Individuals who go on the trip to deliver the shoeboxes return to Iowa with a good feeling about their experience and we hear often that it was a life-changing experience. I hope you’ll consider joining us in this project. If you’re interested in joining us on a trip to Nicaragua, contact [email protected] and she can help get you details.
