Kudos to our Track team who garnered 1st place in last week’s meet. The dedication of the students who have practiced all season is extraordinary! We spend a lot of time congratulating all of our teams because their performances are so spectacular. Especially when you think about the fact that, with the exception of basketball and volleyball, we have no facilities in which they can practice. Although it costs time and money, our baseball, soccer and tennis teams use other local fields. That is not the case for our Cross Country or Track and Field teams. Right now our Track team is hurdling on asphalt, struggling to find an adequate place to practice the high jump and running through our neighboring woods for long distances. I never hear complaints but I await the day when we can give all of these mighty warriors the facilities they deserve! We are in full bloom here at TCS. Each week we will be rewarded by the appearance of the multiple blooming flora on campus. Redbuds always make me smile! The phlox that was selected for the area by Hagan Hall is already adding its color. By next week the dogwoods will be adding to the beauty of our environment. This time of year reminds me of the progress our students have made, as well. This is the time of the year when we see the results of their hard work. We see them with their friends or at events where their talents are being recognized. We pass them on campus and notice their more confident appearance. We watch them compete and know that they are prepared and resilient. At times these changes are not easily evident. Suddenly there they are, bright and gloriously displayed for all to see. As we prepare for Spring Break, I encourage you to help your teen take a deep breath and get ready for the end of the year push. Most of them have caught up from the long snow break and will need an extra dose of energy and motivation to finish the year with the commitment and level of success they have previously experienced. I know our teachers appreciate this breather even if many of them use the week to prepare for year-end projects, trips and exams. When we return from Spring Break we are in a flurry of academic assignments, sports tournaments, performances, banquets and graduations! This is a wonderful time of year, if you can keep up with the pace! Speaking of graduation, I will begin my annual plea. Don’t miss it! High school staff always enjoys attending the Middle School banquet and graduation ceremony to share in the celebration and to get to know the rising ninth graders! Many high school parents attend to support the middle school friends that were a year or two behind their teen. The High School graduation is a remarkable experience, as well. Even if your teen’s graduation date is years away, seeing the “end of the story” is time well spent! We ask our Junior parents to take a leadership role in preparing the reception. Not only is that an efficient plan, but it also encourages them to stay and watch the ceremony. Believe me, when it is your child on that stage, you will be so engulfed in the emotion of the moment that you may miss some of the nuances of the total experience. Parents who attend before it is their year find they can truly enjoy their teen’s big day if they have been to previous events.

Are you the parent of an 8th grade student?

Do you have adorable photos of your 8th grader as a baby that you’d love to share with the world?

Please surprise your 8th grader by sending in 2-3 photos in a sealed envelope to your student’s homeroom

teacher by April 25th. If possible, send a progression of photos, showing your 8th grader’s growth from baby to teenager. We’ll add in a current photo from this year’s

yearbook.

The photos will be assembled into a slide show for all to see at our Middle School Awards Banquet on May 20th.

Transition Leadership Academy

A college immersion experience for students diagnosed with a

Learning Disability (LD) or Attention Deficit Hyper Activity Disorder (ADHD)

May 27 to May 29, 2014

The Transition Leadership Academy is a college immersion experience for recent high school graduates and rising juniors and seniors diagnosed with a Specific Learning Disability (LD) or Attention Deficit Hyper Activity Disorder (ADHD). The purpose of the Institute is to aid these students in their efforts to experience academic and life success as they prepare to make the transition from high school to the world of post-secondary education.

The program offers students first-hand experience interacting with college professors, living in a dorm, eating in dining halls, navigating campus, and participating in a variety of college-related academic and social environments. Through participation in this program, students will explore a variety of leadership development topics that are at the core of making a successful transition from high school to college. Some of these include:

• Life after high school;• Reading and studying skills;• Self-advocacy through effective communication;• Goal-setting & personal strategic planning;• Time management, organization & executive functioning;• Accommodations at the post-secondary level;• Documentation;• Effective use of assistive technology;• Attributes of successful college students; and• Post-secondary “pitfalls” to be avoided.

Learn from our experienced, knowledgeable faculty who combine research-based approaches and experiential learning.

Brendan Leahy, Ed.D.Dr. Leahy has a particular interest in customizing leadership development in an effort to aid individuals with disabilities in their efforts to experience academic and life success. He focuses on a variety of areas including inclusive K-12 contexts and post-secondary opportunities for individuals with high incidence disabilities (LD & ADHD). Currently, he is leading an initiative aimed at exploring the feasibility of installing an inclusive post-secondary program at the University of Georgia for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

H.S. Graduation 2014

Commencement is quickly approaching, and we are sure you all want to reserve dates on your calendars! Please watch for more specific details and directions in upcoming Wednesday Packets. Here is an overview of the festivities: Photo Memento: due by Monday, May 19th. We will continue the tradition of displaying photo memento boards prepared by their families. Each family displays a memory board of their senior at graduation. Sizes and styles vary – some are just photos, others are done in the style of scrapbooks. Just have some fun with it! Graduation Rehearsal: for students only Wednesday, May 21st from 12:30 P.M.-2:30 P.M. in The Cougar Center. Senior students must be a part of rehearsal in order to participate in the ceremony on Friday, May 23rd. Students who would like to speak must submit speech outline to Jennifer by April 3rd. Graduation Speech Rehearsal: Wednesday, May 21st from 2:30 P.M. to 3:30 P.M. This is only for students who are speaking at Graduation. Graduation Luncheon: Thursday, May 22nd at 12:15 P.M. at The DoubleTree Hotel to celebrate with your family & friends! Each Senior and one adult are included. For any additional attendees the cost will be $20.00 per person, and we encourage you to bring the whole gang! Each student must have at least one adult present. Please make your payment by May 2nd so that we can plan accordingly. We will distribute caps & gowns, honor cords and senior achievement pins for graduation at the luncheon! RSVP by filling out and returning the attached invitation to Ivan Plastiak. Please make checks payable to TCS.
