Aim: What are similes?

Homework
• You must share at least one line from their ‘I am from…’ poem.

Vocabulary Review
• Metaphor: An imaginative way to describe something by comparing it to another thing.– Example: __________________________
• Adjective: words that describe or modify another person or thing in the sentence. It answers the question: What kind? or How Many?– Example: He is a tall man.
New Vocabulary
• Noun: A person, place, thing or idea.– Examples: she, he, it, school, class, pencil,
pen, notebook, love, hate
• Verb: words used to show action or a state of being.– Examples: run, fly, eat, sleep, is, are– I talk to the teacher.– I swim in the lake.
Similes• Similes are a way to compare two things using
‘like’ or ‘as’.
• For example, if I want to say that somebody swims well, I can say they swim like a fish because fish swim well.
• There are two basic patterns that you can use.
Similes
• Pattern 1: like– verb + like + noun– Examples: She swims like a fish.
– He walks like a duck.– She runs like a horse.
• Pattern 2: as– as + adjective + as + noun– Examples: He is as tall as a giant.
– She is as fast as a rocket.– He is as graceful as a swan.– She is as sneaky as a fox.– He is as quiet as a mouse.

• A metaphor is an imaginative way to compare two things WITHOUT using like or as.– Example: He is a pig.
• A simile is a way to compare to things by using like or as.– Example: He eats like a pig.
Simile Activity
• Write 5 similes about yourself. You must use at least one with like and at least one with as.
• Draw a picture of yourself in the box.
• PUT YOUR NAME ON THE BACK, not the front.
• I am as blonde as a lion.
• I am as tall as giraffe.
• I read like a librarian.
• I love like Cupid.
• I am as silly as a clown.
Summary
• Similes compare two things using like or as.
• They help make our writing more interesting.
