IN THIS ISSUE WE RE TAkING A LOOk
AT ENDANGERED SpECIES
WHAT DOES ENDANGERED MEAN?
If an animal is ‘endangered’, it means that there are not many of that type of animal left in the world. And, one day, they might all be gone – that’s called becoming ‘extinct’. Dinosaurs, for example, are extinct. Mountain gorillas, blue whales, tigers, pandas and koalas are among some of the animals in danger of becoming extinct. And it’s not just animals who live in far-off countries that are in danger. All fourteen types of bats in Britain are endangered, too.
IS IT A BIG pROBLEM?
• There are now less than 1,000 pandas left in the wild.
• There are less than 7,000 tigers in the wild. Three types of tiger – the Bali, Caspian and Javan – have already become extinct.
• There used to be millions of koalas in Australia. Now there are less than 100,000.
• Animals at risk of extinction are protected by the Endangered Species Act.
ROAR!
TIGER FACTS
• The tiger is the largest member of the cat family.
• Most tigers have more than 100 stripes and no two tigers have the same pattern.
• Tigers live about 10-15 years.
pANDA FACTS
• Pandas have strong jaws, large molars, and a “thumb” that helps them hold their favourite food bamboo while they eat!
• Cubs are born blind and helpless and if there are twins, only one cub survives.
• Unlike other bears, giant pandas do not hibernate

MERINGUE GHOSTS!
INGREDIENTS5 large eggs115g caster sugar115g icing sugarChocolate chips
1. Ask an adult to preheat the oven to 110°C/gas 4 and line 2 baking trays with baking paper.
2. Get an adult to help you separate the egg whites and tip them into a mixing bowl (not plastic). Use an electric whisk to whizz until they look like fluffy clouds and can stick up on their own!
3. Speed up and slowly add the caster sugar, 1 dessert spoonful every 4 seconds until it looks thick and glossy.
4. Gently add 35g of the icing sugar into the bowl and mix with a big metal spoon. Continue to sift and fold in the icing sugar 35g at a time. The mixture should now look smooth.
5. Scoop the mixture into a piping bag and squeeze into ghost-like shapes about 3cm apart. Carefully add the chocolate chip ‘eyes’ and bake for 1½ hours.
CHOCOLATE SATSUMAS INGREDIENTSMelting Chocolate and Satsumas
1. Ask an adult to help you melt some baking chocolate in a bowl over a pan of simmering water.
2. Peel Satsumas and divide into pieces.3. Dip the ends of each piece of satsuma into
the melted chocolate. Place on a greaseproof baking tray and allow to cool and set (not in the fridge – it will spoil your choccy gloss).
4. Now you have your very own chocolate oranges!
MULLED AppLE JUICEINGREDIENTS1 litre apple juice Strips of orange peel 1 cinnamon stick, plus extra to garnish as required3 cloves A wee pinch of sugar or honey
1. Mix together for a drink that tastes like Christmas in a glass!
