DEVELOPMENT BACKGROUND???
The book Malaysias Vision 2020 published in 1993
defined national ambitions and future opportunities forresearchers and to consider long-term strategies to assistthe achievement of national goals. One of the basic visionsthat emerged is for the country to be ecologicallysustainable. This basic vision has become an impetustoward sustainability agenda in the country. The issue ofsustainable development has emerged as one of the topissues in the Eight Malaysia Plan (20012005). Accordingto the plan, the government gave high priority to researchand development as one of their strategy for sustainabledevelopment (Eight Malaysia Plan, 2001). Section 19 of the
plan was devoted to integrate environmental considerationinto development planning. During that period, concertedefforts were expected to intensify in order to improveenergy efficiency, forestry, waste and environmentalmanagement.

EXAMPLE OF THE DEVELOPMENT???
o At present, there are several sustainable
projects that are being or have been constructed
in Malaysia. One of the examples is project
Tanarimba at Janda Baik, Pahang. Tanarimba
is a sustainable housing project that blendsman-made and natural elements in an exciting
concept of ecologically sensitive community
development and also introduces the world to
eco-tourism opportunities in Malaysianhighlands. The project has been dubbed as the
forefront of the ecological movement in
construction (Tanarimba, 2006)

SO, WHAT IS THEDISADVANTAGES???
Higher initial cost than ordinary building.
Not every project manage to get back their
overall net increase cost in a short period
Solution?? Life cycle cost should be conducted to
account for reduction of operating cost & increase
the productivityLack of relevant skills & knowledge

PRINCIPLES OF SUSTAINABLE
CONSTRUCTION
Minimize resource consumption (conserve)
Maximize resource reuse (reuse)
Use renewable and recyclableresources(recycle/renew)
Protect the natural environment (protect nature)
Create a healthy, non-toxic environment (non-toxic)
Apply life cycle cost analysis and true cost
(economics) Pursue quality in creating the built environment
(quality)
