Reading and Writing Review:

Independent and FAMILY Reading Time:

Reading is the most beneficial thing your child can do this summer. We encourage students to read a variety of texts. For example: stories, graphic novels, chapter books, magazines, news articles. Use this resource to learn how to make reading a family activity for all ages. Computer Program: Access Imagine Language & Literacy , an adaptive learning program, from your child’s ClassLink account . Click here to get started . Click here for tips and fixes for the program.

Math Review:

This week is a good opportunity to review content from the spring and continue strong. To help with this, enjoy some of these favorites your student may or may not be familiar with already.

This week we will be working on: ● Numbers: Generating and writing numbers that are one more or one fewer (up to 20)

Origo at Home: Click here to take a virtual trip with our district through the Origo at Home option and  hear some tips for navigating the site...or simply follow the steps below and explore:

Students can build fluency with ordering numbers by engaging in thinking and computational games through First In Math and/or a few of the other selected resources below.

Extension Opportunities

Fluency Sprints:

● Sprint A ● Sprint B

*Give your kindergartener 60 seconds to complete as many as possible. Use the same sprint several times during the week to see their growth!

Fluency Games and Challenges:

❖ Guess My Teen Number ➢ Can your student guess your number with just one “ teeny” clue? Write 11-19 on small pieces of

paper. Choose one, then have your student determine the teen number using the prompt: “My number is 10 and ___ more.” Now it’s their turn!

❖ Cross the Decade ➢ Have your child work on counting numbers higher than 20 and determine which numbers come

before and after a given number! If you are unable to print, make your own number cards and number boards, or have your child use a deck of cards by picking two cards for each digit and then telling which numbers come after and before (ex: cards selected 2 and 9, would be 29).

❖ Family Math Questions:

➢ Write the numbers 1 to 20 on small pieces of paper and mix them up. Ask your kindergartener to put

them in order. Now mix the numbers again, pick one, and ask them to find the number that is one more, and the number that is one less.

➢ Print or show your student this Hundreds Chart . Point to any number on the chart. Ask them to count up to 100 starting from the number you selected. At random times, pause them and ask: “How many tens and how many ones are in the number?”

Summer Learning: Unplugged

Scavenger Hunts: Does your kindergartener have what it takes to track down the reading and math target?

Let’s hunt some initial blends through your house, yard, or anywhere you want to safely explore with your student. Ask your child to write down the blends they learned during this week’s activities. Make a prediction about which sounds they think they will find the most of. For example: /s/ /p/ for spoon.

Now, start hunting!

Tell your child you are thinking of a number between 1 and 20. Give them a clue by telling them what one more than your number is. When they’ve guessed your number, ask them what one less would be. Now you’ve come up with three consecutive numbers. Time to apply some scavenger skills! Use books, clocks, addresses...anything you can safely investigate to find as many examples of each of those three numbers as you can. Try again with new numbers, or see if you both can find more examples of other consecutive numbers.

State of the Art: It’s time to mix hard work and content knowledge to create an artistic display!

Jabari shows such bravery in our story and learns he can jump from the high dive.

You can be brave too! Try something new today and then decorate this banner to hang up and show the world how brave you are.

Have your child think of and tell you three consecutive numbers less than 20. For example, “My number is 4. 3 is one less than 4, and 5 is one more than 4.” Now grab some creative tools and challenge your child to tell a story through pictures about what life might be like with one more or one less of something. For example: Pretend you have 4 puppies. What would life be like at home if you gave one away and had only 3? What would it be like if you got one more and now have 5?
