MDS Summer Camp Newsletter MDS Summer Camp Newsletter Week Five: July 29—August 2
We Visited The New York Hall of Science!
P’rachim Our fifth week of camp was so much fun. We can't believe it all went
by so fast. A lot of exciting people came to camp this week. Becki from
the nature company came and brought some animal friends with her.
We got to see and pet a snake, a dove, and a tortoise. When the animals
would move towards us we were all so excited. We also had a magician
come on Thursday. Helping her "find her rabbit" was so much fun.
All our regular specialties had so many interesting activities. In art this
week we did a lot of painting. We used rollers to paint canvas bags and
then did lots of fun finger painting and mixing with blue, green, and
yellow.
Science also had many things to excite us. We started to learn about the
body. Morah Simona gave us paint sponges and we made finger print
artwork.
This camp session has been amazing. We will miss Sophia. Have a
good Shabbos!
Love,
Morah Stephanie and Morah Hannah
D’vorim
The D’vorim had an awesome week at camp!
In art we made canvas bags and worked with
really cool foam paint! We learned about
bowling in gym and about our senses in
science!
In baking we made dirt! We even hid a worm
inside! On Tuesday we made some new ani-
mal friends. Becki from The Nature Company
introduced us to Doris the Dove, Spencer the
Snake and Maya the Turtle. We even got to
pet Spencer! On Thursday Ms. Pinky came to
perform magic tricks for us and fun was had
by all! Can't wait to see what's in store for next
week!
Parparim Wow! Another fun-filled, fantastic week has flown by for Bunk Parparim! We
welcomed a new counselor to our bunk for the second session, Morah Sophie!
Welcome Morah Sophie!
This week we took part in a lot of exciting activities that involved animals! On
Monday, with Teacher Charles, we went through our obstacle course like leaping
frogs, flying eagles, bouncing bunnies and slithering snakes. Boy, is it tiring being
an animal! On Tuesday, we had a special nature show! We got to learn all about and
even touch real snakes, turtles and doves! We were so brave! The snake felt scaly,
while the turtle’s shell felt hard and rough, and the dove’s feathers were very soft!
On Thursday, we made yummy dirt cups with worms! Don’t worry mom and
dad, it wasn’t real dirt, it was delicious crushed up cookies and pudding! The
worms were tasty rainbow gummy worms!
We also enjoyed a special magic show with Ms. Pinky, her magic bunny, and
Bunk D’vorim. We made her magic bunny reappear! Good job Parparim! We
finished off our fabulous week with a birthday party for Sara Melohn! Mazal tov to
Sara and her family on her 3rd birthday! Can’t wait to see what’s in store for next
week!
Shabbat Shalom,

Baking With Morah Shari
This week in baking started off
very “dirty” as we made our very
own delicious DIRT! By crushing
cookies (dirt) and adding some
goopy “mud” (chocolate pudding),
every child made a planter of dirt
to enjoy. It came complete with a
surprise critter! (After all, what’s
dirt without some worms!)
We also made S’mores Brownies.
The children loved “playing in the
dirt” so much that we decided to
continue our outdoor theme. And
what’s more outdoorsy than camp-
ing? And what do you make while
camping?...SMORES!!!
Here’s the recipe:
S’mores Brownies:
Preheat oven to 350 Degrees
Crust Layer:
1 ½ Cups Graham Crackers
(approximately 1 package)
6 Tablespoons Margarine -melted
2 Tablespoons Sugar
Brownie:
1 Cup Sugar
½ Cup Flour
1/3 Cup Cocoa
¼ teaspoon Salt
¼ teaspoon Baking Powder
2 Eggs
½ Cup Oil
1 teaspoon Vanilla
For Crust: Crush Graham Crack-
ers, mix with sugar then blend with
melted margarine. Line bottom of
pan and bake for 10 minutes.
For Brownie layer: While crust is
baking, blend all dry ingredients
then add wet ingredients and mix.
Pour brownie into crust and top
with Marshmallows.
Bake for 15-20 minutes or until
desired brownie center is ready.
Enjoy!
Gym is IN at MDS Camp!
By Coach Leora Sulimanoff
We’ve got lots of sports covered in gym at MDS! This week, our campers got
to go bowling! The campers discussed how a bowling ball is different from the
other balls that we play with. We used our motor skills and hand eye coordina-
tion, to roll the ball and knock down the pins. Instead of making it an individu-
al sport, we had 40 pins set up and the group worked together as a team to
knock them down. It wasn’t easy, but we were all successful! We
also practiced bowling a ball into a hoop. We learned that if we push it too
hard, it goes right over the hoop, if we don’t push it hard enough it doesn’t
reach the hoop, but if we push it just right, it goes in. We made sure to aim
before we took an arm back, step and roll!
The parachute has always been a group favorite and this week, all the groups
got to have fun with the parachute. It takes a lot of teamwork to make a para-
chute work. When we did, we got to see a colorful display. We watched balls
of various colors hop all over our parachute. Some groups had tent time under
the parachute and others made “popcorn” and played red light green light. It
was so much fun! We can’t wait for next week!
Art With Morah Debbie Vincent Van Gogh, painter of Starry Night, was
the artist of the week here in the Art Room.
The campers loved re-creating this masterpiece
using foam paint and sponges. Sparkling
hearts adorn the counter tops and will make
beautiful ornaments in your home!
Wishing you a wonderful Shabbat,
Morah Debbie
Science With Morah Simona
This week in science we learned about our bodies. We looked
at some body parts and features. We noticed that everybody has
some things that are the same, while each of us also has unique
features, such as different color hair and eyes. We looked at our
fingertips and made fingerprints with paint so we could see
each of our unique prints.
We also learned about our five senses. We practiced using some
of our senses in order to find some matching pairs. The
children had to feel which items were the same in mystery
bags, listen to which containers made the same sound when
they shook them, and match smells without looking.
Some children also explored the various tastes on their
tongues. Many children were surprised to find out that cocoa
powder is not sweet but bitter! We have also been checking on
our grass heads and plants every day and they are growing so
quickly! We will keep measuring their growth and send them
home soon!
Camp Is So Much Fun!
Dagim
Learning about our five senses was the highlight of science this week,
We also saw our grass heads grow, it was so exciting to take a peek.
Becki from The Nature Company brought in many kinds of animals to show,
We saw a snake, dove, tortoise, and millipede - we watched them move and go!
We said goodbye to more of our Dagim friends
We'll miss you Annie, Aaron F., and Max W. we hope to see you again!
The Queens Hall of Science was so cool to explore

We'll see you back on Monday with more fun things to do!
Love Morah Shira, Chana and Michal
Week Number Five just flew on by
Camp couldn't be more fun, even if we try!
In gym we played bowling and knocked down the pins
We all did a great job - you could tell by our grins.
In baking we made brownie s’mores pies
We also made mud and dirt with a wormy surprise!
Super soccer Stars with Coach Junior and Jonathon too,
We practiced team playing and putting cones on their shoe.
Swim Jim has been great we've been learning new things
Like swimming and floating without barbell wings.
In art we made model magic hearts and canvas bags as well,
We painted them and used jewels -they look beautiful as you can tell.
Tziporim Wow! Week number five is over and done.
Just like the others, it was so much fun.
Gym was all about bowling, and knocking down the pins.
We used teamwork to knock them over, so that we could all win.
In art we were inspired by Van Gogh's Starry Night.
We also made pretty jeweled hearts, it was such a delight.
In kinder dance we learned how to dance to counts of eight.
We choreographed a new dance, that turned out really great.
In baking we made plants using cookies and pudding to look like
mud and dirt.
We also made s’more brownie pies, what a yummy dessert.
In science we learned about our five senses, sight, taste, hearing,
touch, and smell,
We played some fun games using only one sense at a time, we all
did so well.
Off to the hall of science we went.
With so many exciting things there, it was time well spent.
Please rest up and get ready, for there are only two weeks to go.
It's going to be awesome, fun, and exciting, just so you know.
Shabbat Shalom!
Morot Karen, Sarah, and Mollie
Although our group has downsized, the Malkot are still having a blast in
camp! Now that we are a small group, we were able to take a trip to Riverside
Park! The girls had fun swinging on the swings, and climbing the monkey
bars! We even had a picnic snack of cookies!
In science this week we learned all about our five senses! We played different
matching games, and had to match up different spices by using our sense of
smell. We also had to feel different objects in bags and guess what they were
without seeing them! It was super tricky but some of our guesses were right!
In art, we got to decorate our own bracelets. We put on different jewels, string,
and yarn. They turned out beautifully! We also made heart shapes from
model magic!
In gym, we used a parachute to pop popcorn (they were actually small
balls). Coach Leora counted to three and then we started shaking the
parachute!! The "popcorn" went flying in the air!
Our trip to the Science museum was great! We started off by exploring
in the outdoor playground! We had to try and pull our own weight up
with a rope! There was also a see-saw made of wood. We used science
to see what would happen when the Morahs all went to one side of it,
and the girls went to the other side!
Inside the museum we explored all different activities. We made giant bubbles
that popped when they got too big, and we even got to see a show all about the
different matters (solid, liquids, gas). We saw what happens when you put bal-
loons that are blown up in a pot and add nitrogen to the pot. Way cool! They
shrink! Don't forget to check out the Malkot’s pictures on Snapfish! Looking
forward to another fun-filled week!
Have a great weekend,
Your Malkot Morahs.
Malkot
It’s hard to believe this is the 5th newsletter, but time does fly
when your having fun! This week at camp we did a lot! We
played with the massive parachute in gym, throwing balls up in
the air as we all lifted it high and slammed in down. In art with
Morah Debbie we made our own Vincent van Gogh-inspired art
projects and made mud pies with worms in baking (cookies, pud-
ding & gummy worms) and learned about directions in Kinder-
dance with Teacher George! In Music we learned and played
new instruments including bongos, flutes and shakers! We also
had a special visit from our friends at the petting zoo meeting
birds, snakes and other reptile friends. We went on an amazing
trip to the Queens Hall of Science, going down big slides, a
massive scale, a human spider web, and so much more. It was a
blast! Lastly, we got a new counselor this week - Tali! She'll be
with us through the end of camp!
We want to say goodbye to all of those boys who finished camp
for this summer, we hope you had a great time and hope you
have the sweetest most amazing upcoming year!
Reminder next week Tuesday is Pajama Day! Please send your
Gibor with his pajamas in his bag and have him dressed for the
pool! Hope you have a beautiful Shabbos and a fabulous
weekend,
