the scoop MAY 23 2012 Dear Parents Our Southern Zone Cross Country is this Friday at the Ag Research Farm on the Woodlands Morton Main Road. Please take the time to read the flyer coming home in todays newsletter which details the facts around the day. Remember this day can be wet, muddy and cold! We are looking forward to the 'competitive participation' from all our age groups. Please encourage your child - even if this is not their favourite southern zone event - to give it a determined effort! Our level of participation examples our attitude of determination, even in the face of adversity! Last week Jan, Amy and I hosted our annual New Entrant parent night. I talked about team work, I talked about collaboration, I talked about staff supporting each other, I talked about our school working together like a village raising a child, I talked about all our teachers working to meet the learning needs of every child - no matter what their age - at what ever level they are working at. We then showcased the teaching and learning environment of our school with our video clip (compiled by Mark) from one of our parent workshops in Term 1. It introduced some of the ideas behind our teaching and learning philosophy- from classroom setup to programme delivery, to learning tools used. A question and answer session then followed with the teachers. Parents then had the opportunity to visit the two rooms with the teachers and see some examples of work and the environment provided. Awesome - the night had a real positive feel to it. It reminded me again of the importance of a strong and connected community between home and school. A community that stands together to support and resource the collaborative environment that helps enable such an effective teaching team for our children. Now, more than ever, we must walk together to encourage and support our children, so they get the richest learning opportunities possible. For indeed - when the village works together, anything is possible! Lastly this week, please take note of the other flyer coming home today in the newsletter from me. It details some exciting news for our school regarding our classroom numbers and setup from Term 3 on. See you Friday! Dear Parents Our Southern Zone Cross Country is this Friday at the Ag Research Farm on the Woodlands Morton Main Road.

I talked about team work, I talked about collaboration, I talked about staff supporting each other, I talked about our school working together like a village raising a child, I talked about all our

teachers working to meet the learning needs of every child - no matter what their age - at what ever level they are working at.

A community that stands together to support and

resource the collaborative environment that helps enable such an effective teaching team for our children.

Synthesizing! Kauri are still learning how to ‘synthesize when we read - this helps us make conclusions about what we’re learning about NZ history and the different cultures we have here.

The Year 5,s made these amazing Ta Moko while the rest of us were at the Young Leaders Conference. Ms Duncan helped them understand what the Moko represent and the significance of them for Maori, both in the past and today. Great job, Year 5’s!

School News:Thank you: You will have noticed some new paintwork on the concrete around the school for children to play on. These would not have been possible without the support of Malloch McClean Chartered Accountants and Business Advisors who thoroughly enjoyed supporting this community project and we would like to say thank you. We also want to thank Dave Mckenzie who painted the stencil work for us and Bex McKenzie and Phillipa Horton for organising this project. We have still to put some coloured highlights on some of the games.

Sports Notices:Southern Zone Annual Moffett Cup Competition: Will be held Week 3 Term 3 for Year 3 - 6 pupils. Please start talking to your children about what they want to play in the competition. Week 5 Term 2MANUKA have been sharing their thinking about working in a group. We have agreed that it is OK to not do your job in a group if you are sick but that it is not OK if you are feeling lazy or tired. Finn said it wouldn't be very good if a fireman was feeling lazy when his job was to put out the fire. We know to always try our best and will do this on Friday when we run as a group for the first time in the Cross Country. Certificates: Peyton for being quick with her basic facts to 5 and Finn for knowing lots of letters and sounds.

KOWHAI • I am looking forward to the cross country because I am fast - Amilea• I am looking forward to going to the cross country because I get to go on the school bus - Ollie• I’m looking forward to sticking with Cody and running as fast as Cody - Scott

RIMU Room Rimu went outside to gather some Autumn leaves. We are going to do some leaf rubbings to go with this weeks Autumn poem. We are also writing about our leaves. We are learning about our rights come with responsibilities that we have to meet. We are learning our mihimihi so watch out for a sheet coming home that you can fill in the information that we need to complete them.Certificates Sacha Horton and Addisyn Marshall.

RATA have all been practising for the cross country on Friday. We are learning how to push through that uncomfortable feeling when we first start running. Below are some of our couplet poems.

When I went outside and felt the cold breeze,I felt sorry for all the bees in the trees.Sophie

Chickenpox makes you itchy, itchy, jiggle.Itching too hard makes me wiggle.Liam D

I have chickenpox, my body is white and red.I think I'll need to go to bed.Ingrid

I hate it when I get the chickenpox, because I feel like I'm thrown in the stocksWilliam

MIRO are very excited about Cross Country this Friday. We have been training very hard over the last few weeks and it has been awesome to see the level of the childrens fitness and their attitudes improve. Well done guys. Most children are in need of a few more school supplies, such as black pens and a new Reading work book. There is a note on their homework sheet about this.Have a fantastic week :)Certificates: Holly Muirhead, Anneka Ivanov, Jackson Herrick and Ollie Polaschek

TOTARA What great Autumn poems Team Totara published and presented for homework last week! Our authors all thought deeply about rhythm, rhyme, simile, alliteration, onomatopoeia, and adjectives to produce top-quality, totally enjoyable poems that we all enjoyed sharing! Remember that you can find great educational games and activities linked off our class blog to consolidate skills and go alongside homework activities!Have a sunshiny week, looking forward to seeing you at cross country on Friday! Della CarrCertificates: Emma Henderson- trying your best in all areas of work. Jack Pagan- making sure he is meeting the success criteria.

KAURI have been digging deeper into how the Treaty of Waitangi came into being this week. It's been a wonderful context to discuss themes on team work, getting along with people who are different and valuing that difference, too. It would be great if you could continue these discussions with your child at home - you might be surprised by their depth of thinking and what we can all learn from this idea. Please visit our blog to see some updates on how our inquiry is progressing and lots of other insights into our week! It really is a window into our class.
