This week in Neuroscience w/Ms. Torres & Ms. Brown

[email protected] [email protected]

Concepts In this unit (Motor Highways) it important for students to be able to understand:

1) Voluntary movements require conscious thought or planning and improve with practice;

2) A special part of the cerebral cortex initiates voluntary movement;

3) Programs for movements that are learned and practiced are transferred to the cerebellum.

Activities 1) Independent Review: Students will take notes on sensory neurons, reflexes, and voluntary movements.

2) Group Discussion: Students will compare/contrast well-learned voluntary movements with new ones.

3) Group Activity: Students learn about voluntary movements and experience the effect of practice on

new voluntary motor skills.

4) Independent Practice: Students will explore the patellar reflex as they learn about motor responses in

the spinal cord.

5) Worksheet(s): Real Knee Jerkers, Reflex Reactions, Voluntary Movements

6) Literature Circles: Trouble at Tsavo’s Reading: Chapters 7-9

Reminders/Comments: o Parents, please check Parent Connect to remain up-to-date with student progress.

Motor Highways Unit

INVOLUNTARY AND VOLUNTARY MOVEMENT: Lesson 6 Take a Walk Concepts 1) Well-learned voluntary movements can be carried out almost without thinking about them. 2) Programs for well-learned voluntary movements are stored in the cerebellum. Activities Students will compare and contrast well-learned voluntary movements with new ones. Academic Practice: ALWAYS refer to your daily agenda in your neuroscience binders for assignment instructions and due dates. Lesson 7 My Motor Strip Concepts 1) The motor cortex has specific areas that coordinate each group of muscles in the body. 2) Important muscle groups occupy proportionately larger areas of the motor cortex. Activities Students make a model of the motor cortex that they can wear, and they investigate which muscle groups correspond to the largest areas on the motor cortex. Lesson 8 Motor System Model

Concepts 1) The central nervous system helps to direct and coordinate movements. 2) Damage to the spinal cord can affect the transmission of signals through the nervous system below the point of injury to the spinal cord. 3) The backbone (spine) protects the spinal cord. Activities Students construct a model of the nervous system that highlights the most important structures involved in the control of movement. Reminders: Students if you miss class it is your responsibility to come to me for missed assignments during my conference period, before, or after school.
