Introduction Introduction Introduction

Hi everyone, I’m Tianze Dong, a third year architecture student.

What i fi nd facinating about architecture is the possibilities of simple materials. Bricks, concrete, rubber, plastic, they can really be something if we know how to use them.

Softwares that I am most familier with are Autocad and Sketchup. This is the fi rst time i ever use Rhino and I am looking forward to discover the power of this software.

In the past, I was a more hand drawing orientated person. Not only because of I was encouraged to do so but also because of I appriciate the beauty of hand drawings. However, nowadays, most modern archtiectures were design with computer aided drafting softwares. The culture differences between the new ‘digital architectures’ are dimishing. One day, I was imagining what if all the world’s most famous contemporary architecture were built in the same city and I thought that the city can actually look quiet harmounious. Because there are so little is there to culturally distinguish them. Is this a result of the focusing too much on computational language and forgeting who we are?

This is a head piece I did in my fi rst year’s Virtual Environment. It is my fi rst experiment of 3D modelling.

This wetland discovery center is a place for people to observe the surrounding marshes, wild life and learn about the wetlands.

The main highlight is the water pattern on the facade. The riddles and waves draws connections between the wetland and the building. They were digitally designed and made of Glass Reinforced Cement. With facades like this the building even look smudged into the landscape!

This house it is actually an extension to an existed house. The occupier is a family with 3 children. It situates at the original backyard and contains a new living area and bedroom for the parents. Meanwhile the old narrow long house was reduced to a 3 bed room ‘Dorm’ for the young children.I love it for many reasons

It is a beautiful example of how architecture can work as landscape. The grassed sloppy wall had became an out door entertaining feature. It can be climbed, or simply laid on. The courtyard is now the center of the house and this space is highly activated. The interaction between the occupants and the house is great. I’ve seen photos of the children running down the hill, playing in the yard, and climbing up a cast iron beam in the dining area.

For the occupants’ comfort, this extension features 2 corridors. The courtyard between the kid’s dorm and the hill house works as a summer corridor. And a 1 meter wide indoor corridor (also work as a tall fence) that stretches along the boundary works as a winter corridor. It can be opened up for ventilation or closed for protection against undesirable weather conditions.
