June 29th 2020 Important Updates URGENT Letter sent out by email and social media regarding our school closure from 29/06 26 June 2020 Dear Parent/Carer RE: Schools re-opening Many of you will have seen the video we created recently sharing with you the preparations made in order to re-open the school. Staff have been working extremely hard and have been very much looking forward to meeting all of the pupils. As you may be aware, as part of our health and safety routine procedures our water is tested every month. All previous tests have been negative. However, today we have had a positive test result for localised low levels of legionella contamination which require a full system chlorination. In order to prevent further proliferation of contamination, we are unable to use the water system until such time that chlorination has taken place and further test results are received to indicate that the system is clear. Tomorrow, we will have a full system chlorination. We then have to wait for a period of time before retesting can take place. Therefore it is with a very heavy heart and with health and safety paramount that we have no other choice other than to close the school building for two weeks from Monday 29 th June. This means that no staff or pupils will be allowed into the building for the next two weeks with hub pupils catered for at another nearby school. Those parents will be informed of this today. I’m confident that we will be in a position to open the school, week beginning 13 July. Until then, we will continue with our home learning support remotely. I fully appreciate how keen our pupils and staff were to return to school and it is extremely disappointing to have to share this news with you. If you do need to contact the school please use the email address we share weekly in our parent bulletin and you will receive either a response or a phone call from a member of staff. RE: Schools re-opening

Many of you will have seen the video we created recently sharing with you the preparations made in order to re-open the school. Staff have been working extremely hard and have been very much looking forward to meeting all of the pupils. As you may be aware, as part of our health and safety routine procedures our water is tested every month. All previous tests have been negative. Live Lessons Agreement

Parents/carers, please look out for a live lesson agreement which will be emailed out to you shortly.

Please complete the form in order to provide consent for your child/children to participate in live

lessons. Although we have been thrilled at the participation in home learning from many of our

pupils, there are many who have said how much they have missed the interaction with their teachers

and in having that face to face teaching.

These live lessons will begin very soon and we feel that it would be extremely beneficial for your child

to be involved in the opportunity to participate in some live lessons prior to their return to school.

We also anticipate that live teaching will continue in the Autumn term to some degree and so it would

really help if you could sign the consent form in order for your child/children to get involved now in

this new way of learning!

Return to School Video

Despite the school not opening as planned on 29th June, if you haven’t already had the opportunity,

please do watch our video which has been created to help provide you and your children with some

further reassurance of the measures we have taken to ensure that we are fully prepared for your

child’s return to school on 13th July.

It is available to watch on You tube.

Special thanks to David Long, our Site Manager, and his team, for all of their hard work in helping to

ensure that the school is fully prepared.

Social Distancing at Brynmawr School and is accessible via You Tube

https://youtu.be/nUdqJjVZqN0

In the meantime please do email the school if you have any questions you would like to ask and we

will try our best to answer any queries you may have at this time.

In this bulletin you will find:

Celebrations of pupils’ efforts and work this past week from staff

Information from each faculty area and examples of pupil work

Home Learning

Please see the school website for Home Learning work Submission of Home Learning

We appreciate that some of our pupils are completing their work on paper rather than electronically and this is

completely fine. Can we ask when the work is returned to school and given into the member of staff in

reception that the name of the pupil and the teachers/subject the work is for is written on the work. This is just

to ensure that the work is able to get to the appropriate staff member as quickly as possible.

Home Learning Award

The first set of Home Learning certificates will be on their way to some of you now! Those pupils in the top

20% of achievement points in Classcharts have been selected for this award. Well done!

Remember you and your child are able to access Classcharts regularly to see the achievement points on your

child’s account. Please continue to praise them on their efforts and engagement. If you do not have access to

your account, please don’t hesitate to contact the school at [email protected].

Please encourage your child to try their best!

This week our KS3 pupils have been busy completing the first task for their ‘Making the News’ projects,

looking at some big stories that have happened throughout the school year and linking the fitness

requirements of each: VE Day/ Cpt Tom; SpaceX Mission; Kipchoge Sub-2hr Marathon. Examples of this

great work can be found on our social media accounts.

Year 9 GCSE PE pupils are producing a very high standard of work through their completion of past

paper questions, we have been very impressed with the knowledge and understanding of the topics

covered. Special recognition to Ellie Hughes who achieved a remarkable 97% in the 2017 questions!.

Our Year 10 GCSE pupils have begun their contemporary studies by researching the factors that affect

participation for minority groups within our society and the policies and initiatives in place to increase

participation. The Prize Question for last week was won by Year 9 pupil Ben Targett with a very well

applied answer to a training programme question, well done Ben!

Home learning can and does present many different challenges for each of our pupils and we are

especially proud of all their hard work, independence and resilience in overcoming many of these new

challenges – a huge well done to all and keep it up!

*If any pupil is having difficulty accessing or submitting the work please do not hesitate to get in

touch by contacting the school or email to: [email protected]

Go Green Day

Go Green Day is celebrated on 26th June each year and is organised by the Size of Wales charity. The

charity uses the commonly used measurement for deforestation the “size of Wales” to highlight and

encourage the people of Wales to help tackle climate change by taking simple positive actions. We aim

to get more involved with this charity next year and hopefully host our own Go Green Day!

CYMRAEG DEPARTMENT

Let’s find out about a famous Welsh artist!

Penry Williams (1802–1885) was Welsh, but

spent most of his adult life in Rome, moving

there in 1827. For half a century, his studio

was an attraction for English visitors to Rome.

He was in a relationship with fellow Welshman

the sculptor John Gibson, and died in the

eternal city in 1885.

Here is one of Williams’ most famous pieces:

Mediterranean Bay Seen through an Arch (1830’s)

Below are a few extracts from Tia Wyer-Samuel’s

project about Wales. Tia is in Year 7.

Tia researched her topic thoroughly and created an

informed, interesting project. Well done, Tia!
